    Hidilyn Diaz inspires the nation anew with her very own Kwentong Jollibee “Ginto”

    When weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz won the country’s first gold medal after a near century-long wait at the Olympics, Filipinos from all over the globe rejoiced and celebrated her historic triumph. Hidilyn’s winning lift, which also set a new Olympic record, was a result of years of hard work, resilience, and dedication that she put into reaching her dream.

    And this inspiring journey of Hidilyn—with all the challenges she had to overcome—is at the center of the latest Kwentong Jollibee short film entitled “Ginto”. Jollibee, in collaboration with its partner agency McCann Worldgroup Philippines, hopes to share Hidilyn’s story to bring joy and inspiration to every Filipino.

    Looking back on her humble beginnings

    Hidilyn vividly remembers when she first started training. “Ang gamit kong weights noon ay mga gallon ng tubig. Mayroon akong mahabang bakal, ‘yun ang bar ko, tapos sa magkabila ay mga bote na may lamang tubig o kaya buhangin,” said Hidilyn. There were a lot of challenges at the start of her career, she shared, and many instances when she wanted to give up. But these did not discourage her.

    Her hard work paid off when she bagged the silver medal in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

    Noong nanalo ako sa Rio, doon mas naging malinaw sa akin na maraming nakababatang atleta na nakatingin sa akin para sa inspirasyon. Kaya sabi ko, hindi ako pwedeng sumuko. Ilalaban ko hanggang makuha natin ang pinakamimithing ginto,” said Hidilyn.

    Reliving her winning moment

    To launch the short film “Ginto”, Jollibee held a virtual press conference last October 14. Seeing the film in full for the first time, the Olympic champion was touched to have witnessed her story from the lens of a viewer. “Naiyak po talaga ako, lalo na yung doon sa part na chini-cheer ako ng mga frontliners, ng mga bata. Masaya po ako na na-inspire ko sila gaya ng pag-inspire nila sa akin.”

    The image of Hidilyn clenching her fists in victory will forever be remembered by the whole nation. With “Ginto”, she got to relive this moment, along with the challenges she had to overcome leading to the Tokyo Olympics.

    When asked how it was like re-enacting her own journey, Hidilyn said, “Bumalik lahat ng emotions — ‘yung saya, ‘yung hirap, at ‘yung pagpapalakas ng mga tao na tumulong sa akin para maabot ko yung pangarap ko.” To her, starring in her own Kwentong Jollibee short film was like another chance to relive her winning moment. “Masaya dahil ibang experience din for me ‘yung mag-act and rewarding dahil nakita ko ‘yung personal journey ko through another lens,” she added.

    Long-time Kwentong Jollibee and award-winning director Pepe Diokno said it was a great honor to work on this project. “I’ve done a lot of Kwentong Jollibee films, and each story is different. But what sets ‘Ginto’ apart is that it’s a story of a sports icon that’s being revealed to the world. Hidilyn’s journey to success is the inspiration we need in these difficult times, and I treasure that I was able to do it with her and of course, Jollibee,” shared Direk Pepe.

    Beyond her golden win

    Now, with multiple awards and recognition, what more does a Hidilyn Diaz dream of? “For me, gusto ko po makatapos ng aking studies,” she said. At present, Hidilyn is taking up Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. “Gusto ko po makuha ang aking diploma at makapag-develop pa ng training schools para sa mga aspiring na atleta gaya ko noong nag-uumpisa ako. Nandito pa rin ako kasi weightlifting ang passion ko at gusto kong i-share ito sa mga kabataan,” Hidilyn added. She also mentioned plans of setting up an outreach activity similar to a community pantry in the coming months.

    The short film chronicles the life-long journey of Hidilyn in typical Kwentong Jollibee fashion – heartwarming, tugs at the heartstrings and filled with life lessons – while aimed at continuing to inspire Filipinos to reach their own dreams.

    Ginto showed how Hidilyn, despite the lockdown and being away from her family,
    persevered to reach her golden dream.

    Every June 12, the country beams with pride as it celebrates its independence and freedom from colonial rule. But in today’s context, what does it mean to be Pinoy and Proud and how can this be embraced by every Filipino?

    As the country commemorates its 123rd Independence Day, Jollibee once again ignites the hearts of Filipinos all over the world with its new song titled “Pusong Pinoy.” Performed by world-class celebrities Sarah Geronimo and Billy Crawford, “Pusong Pinoy” celebrates an ever-present Pinoy Pride rooted in the Filipinos’ innate ability to give joy and hope, as well as rise above challenges by embodying the spirit of Bayanihan and helping one another.

    “We wanted to highlight an admirable trait of Filipinos – while we are known as being resilient and being joyful people, what drives this is our malasakit sa kapwa which enables us to face any challenges that come our way. The Bayanihan spirit has always been a part of our culture, and we see now that it is still very much alive in modern times.     In the video, Sarah and Billy sing about how Filipinos spread pride and joy, with scenes depicting acts of selflessness and compassion for others specially during challenging times. These examples show how Filipinos overcome hard times by uplifting each other with a kind of joy that comes from within. And how, in this celebration of Independence, they give meaning to their freedom by sharing it with those around them.

    When asked what makes her proud of her Filipino heritage, Sarah said, “Yung mga katangian ng Pilipino ang talagang hinahangaan ko sa bawat isa sa atin. Lalo ngayon, mas nakikita natin ang pagiging matulungin, matatag, at mapagmahal ng bawat isa. Sa maliit o sa malaking paraan man, lahat ng Pilipino kumikilos para sa kapakanan ng kanyang kapwa.”

    Billy Crawford also shared how Filipinos can take advantage of their freedom to bring joy to one other. To him, holding on to the hope that better days are about to come is one way to remain inspired as Filipinos move forward. “This is the best time for us to remain humble and take everything in life as it goes. (GSMI) is giving basketball fans a platform to come together and extend help to those who are affected by the pandemic. “Bagong Tapang sa One Ginebra Nation Jersey and Cap Collection Promo” lets basketball fans collect Gin Kings merchandise and give back at the same time.

    The jersey and cap collection promo had a virtual media launch recently that was streamed live via Ginebra San Miguel’s Facebook page. The promo is in line with Ginebra San Miguel’s latest campaign “Bagong Tapang” which highlights the new courage and strength that Filipinos possess to overcome the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The jerseys that were unveiled during the event featured Scottie Thompson (6), Stanley Pringle (11), Japeth Aguilar (25), La Tenorio (5), and Mark Caguioa (47). Starting on May 1 to June 30, 2021, fans can get their hands on the limited-edition merchandise for only P100 for the One Ginebra Nation jersey or P150 for the One Ginebra Nation cap for every six (6) seals or caps of any combination of Ginebra San Miguel, GSM Blue, GSM Blue Flavors, Ginebra San Miguel Premium Gin and Primera Light Brandy.

    During the launch, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel fans got to see their favorite players for the first time after winning the 2020 Philippine Cup championship at the historic PBA bubble in December last year. With the restrictions in social gatherings, the traditional championship victory party and fans day had to be set aside.

    “Ang Ginebra fans ibang level talaga. May PBA man o wala, nararamdaman namin na nandyan sila at sumusuporta sa amin. At first, we thought we are not going to survive playing without the fans because as a never-say-die team, doon kami humuhugot ng lakas. Sila ‘yung 6th man namin sa game. Napag-usapan ng team na iisipin namin ‘yung ginagawa namin ay para sa fans at para magbigay inspirasyon lalo na sa panahon ngayon,” relates LA Tenorio of the Gin Kings’ PBA bubble experience.

    PAYING IT FORWARD

    The jersey collection promo had been one of Ginebra San Miguel’s most patronized consumer promotions. For this year, GSMI tapped non-profit organization Gawad Kalinga (GK) as its partner for this project’s noble undertaking.

    “To underscore the need for unity during these times, we partnered with Gawad Kalinga and through the promo, we aim to support GK’s Barangay Walang Iwanan program that helps Filipinos who are severely affected by the pandemic. We hope to encourage Gin Kings fans and our consumers to ‘put on’ a Bagong Tapang kind of courage and to wear this kind of Bagong Tapang for others to see and emulate,” says GSMI General manager Noli Macalalag.

    For every jersey or cap that they redeem, basketball fans and consumers will be able to donate to GK’s Barangay Walang Iwanan program that supports the farmers in Sariaya, Quezon, and the fishermen in Barangay Bagumbayan, Pililla, Rizal.

    “Bagong Tapang sa One Ginebra Nation Jersey and Cap Collection” merchandises are available for redemption at selected Puregold and other redemption outlets nationwide. To confirm the merchandise’s authenticity, an authentication patch can be found on the lower left part of the jersey, while an authentication sticker is attached to the cap.
