OMF partners with more groups to expand One For Trees program

One Meralco Foundation (OMF) has teamed up with more organizations to further its sustainable reforestation program aimed at contributing to environment preservation and improvement of the lives of more Philippine communities.

The social development arm of Meralco signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Butuan City Water District (BCWD), Fostering Education and Environmental Development (FEED), and Participatory Research Organization of Communities and Education towards Struggle for Self-Reliance of Bohol (PROCESS Bohol) for the One For Trees (OFT) program.

Under the OFT program, OMF provides funding for reforestation activities such as establishment of nurseries, planting of seedlings during the appropriate season, and continued monitoring of the trees planted. OMF plans to nurture and protect at least 5 million trees by 2025, while providing sustainable livelihood to communities around conservation sites.

The new partnerships will expand the reach of the program to the provinces of Agusan del Norte; Laguna; and parts of Bohol. The new OFT partners have identified specific targets to help their respective communities.

For BCWD, from the province of Agusan del Norte will plant 48,000 trees in the Taguibo Watershed to sustain the forest reserve in the watershed enabling quality water supply for the people of Butuan City.

FEED, on the other hand, targets to plant 100,000 trees in the Laguna-Quezon Land Grant site in Siniloan, Laguna which is planned to be developed as a major biodiversity hub in the Sierra Madre mountain range.

Meanwhile, PROCESS Bohol will rehabilitate upland and coastal forest patches damaged by the rampage of Typhoon Odette in Anda, Pilar, Ubay, Candijay, Mabini, and Carlos P. Garcia in Bohol. Through OFT, PROCESS Bohol plans to nurture 100,000 trees of which 50,000 are mangroves.

For OMF, with the help of these organizations, OFT can deliver a sustainable solution to the environmental and economic needs of the marginal communities.

The OFT is a long-term commitment to the environment and to the people, which is anchored on sustaining partnerships with Civil Society Organizations, Local Government Units and communities – a pledge to collectively work for climate action.

“Some may see our efforts as a mere tree-planting, tree-growing, or tree-nurturing with a very high survival rate target. Yes, we require those. But more importantly, One For Trees also invests at building the capacities and improving the economic welfare and social well-being of the people who maintain these trees and ensures that the same trees will also benefit their own families and communities.” said Meralco Chief CSR Officer and OMF President Jeffrey O. Tarayao.

“Most of the work we will put into the vision of One For Trees requires waiting for so long, that only our children’s children will reap the fruit of these labors. May we all be patient and sometimes, impatient, so that the One For Trees program will flourish long after we have planted the seeds of our work,” added Tarayao.

(From L-R) FEED Director for Partnerships Anne Marie Bakker, BCWD General Manager Anselmo Sang Tian, OMF President Jeffrey O. Tarayao, and PROCESS Bohol Executive Director Aurelio Salgados Jr. during the Memorandum of Agreement signing held last September 29, 2022.

The recent signing forms part of the OFT kick-off activities for this year, which also includes community tree-planting and learning visit in the Green Earth Heritage Farm OFT site located in San Miguel, Bulacan. These activities aimed at improving reforestation practices by learning from the partners’ experiences and getting more support from other stakeholders for the initiative.

  • Round One platform officially goes live

Round One platform officially goes live

PASAY, PHILIPPINES — Round One, the country’s first equity crowdfunding platform, was officially launched on Wednesday, October 12, at the Solaire Resort and Casino Manila.

Conceptualization of the platform began at the end of 2019, following the release of the crowdfunding rules and regulations by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) a few months prior. Round One was accordingly granted its license to operate on February 23 of this year.

Through the platform, entrepreneurs looking to raise funds can launch campaigns of up to Php 50 million pesos per year via the public sale of securities. Round One conducts high level due diligence on both entrepreneurs (also known as “issuers”) and investors on the platform. To ensure transparency, issuers are required to upload investment offering materials and indicate the complete details of their fundraising goal (such as the share price) and terms of the securities being offered.

On the other hand, only registered and verified investors may commit to campaigns. All monetary transactions are safekept by Round One’s partner banks and financial institutions through the duration of a campaign to ensure the proper handling of investor cash.

“Round One shall provide a good holistic solution for entrepreneurs not just as a fundraising avenue, but also in attracting experts from all sectors to mentor them to grow and improve.” said Ms. Marian Peña, Chairman and President of Eastern Securities Development Corporation (ESDC), the stock brokerage that manages and operates Round One.

Also in attendance were SEC Director Vicente Graciano P. Felizmenio, Jr. of the Markets and Securities Regulation Dept.; Ms. Alegria Limjoco, Founder and Chairperson of the Philippine Franchise Association; Atty. Marion Ivy Decena, Director of the DOST-Technology Application and Promotion Institute; Mr. Pierangelo A. Dominguez, Head of the Quezon City Local Economic Investment Promotions Office; and various members of startup and SME enablers, private equity investors, entrepreneurs, and association and institution partners.

Among Round One’s first cohort of committed issuers are Alaga Health Inc., Burket.PH Inc., Cocotel International Inc., IOL Inc., LGUSuite Inc., Raven Global Inc., Filipay (Service Economy Applications Inc.), Tipaklong Sustainable Mobility Corp., and UNAWA. The cohort was presented during the launch through a panel discussion, where they discussed their forthcoming fundraising campaigns on the platform and engaged the audience’s questions.

“Our goal as a platform is quite simple: for Round One be an avenue for every entrepreneur, startup, and SME to access every kind of support they need on their journey,” shared Mr. Brandon Leong, Business Unit Lead of Round One. “We’re excited to officially go live so that all these issuers can finally launch their campaigns and get themselves out there.”

Round One is a business unit of Eastern Securities Development Corporation (ESDC), a duly registered stock brokerage and a member of the Philippine Stock Exchange since 1977. Regulated by the SEC, the platform serves as a financial intermediary between startups and SMEs and potential investors.

  • Discover how these inspiring local CEOs built their fab business on Shopee

Discover how these inspiring local CEOs built their fab business on Shopee

Founders of Pinoy beauty brands Jenna Essence and ISHIN talk about their entrepreneurial journey and what they’re offering beauty and skincare enthusiasts at the Beauty Budol Sale on Shopee this October 23 to 25.

MANILA, OCTOBER 21, 2022 –  Starting your own business is no easy task– more so when this business is focused on beauty and health products. Not only do you need to have a keen eye on what’s trending, you also need to ensure that your items are effective and safe for your customers, and that ultimately builds a loyal community that keeps on using your products. Learn how two proudly local beauty brands Jenna Essence and ISHIN built their business and made waves among Filipinos in the last few years.

Jenna Reyes, the hardworking She-EO of Jenna Essence

Jenna had humble beginnings before starting Jenna Essence. Her entrepreneurial experience began at an early age as a “Batang Quiapo”, with her younger years spent helping out her grandma sell trinkets in front of Quiapo church. Growing up, Jenna was known among her peers as strong and hardworking, as she juggled different jobs to make ends meet for her family. She began to sell beauty products on a whim to supplement their household income, not knowing this would turn her life around.

Jenna was encouraged by her suppliers to start her own beauty brand when they saw her determination to sell their products on social media and through word-of-mouth. After testing the market with a few products, she finally hit her stride with the trending Cocoberry Beauty Essentials. Her business flourished even more when she partnered with Shopee to bring her distributors on the platform. Today, Jenna Essence has expanded to 500 resellers nationwide.

The true beauty of Jenna does not lie in her products, but in the way she runs her business with a strong sense of purpose. “For me, ang business ko ay hindi lang para sa akin, ito din ay para sa mga kapwa ko na gustong makagaan sa buhay [the business is not just for me, it’s also for those who want to have a better life], ” says Jenna.

Beauty enthusiasts can check out Jenna’s Cocoberry Soap at Shopee’s Beauty Budol Sale. Made from coconut oil, this soap has positive reviews on its effectiveness to moisturize dry skin, sweet scent on use and smooth texture that’s easy on the skin.  This unique soap helps soften and remove dead skin cells to make your skin look fresh and glowing.

Check out more of Jenna Essence’s beauty essentials on Shopee this Beauty Budol Sale and get up to 25% off on top products.

Shirleen and Miguel Bautista, the power couple of ISHIN

Shirleen and Miguel did what most of us aspire to– they chased their dreams and followed through. Despite both working high-level corporate jobs, they still felt that they could do something more. Both had an affinity for entrepreneurship and knew that this was the path for them.

By chance, the couple came across a hot selling ointment among locals in one of their trips abroad and thought of selling it in the country. With this item, they became successful distributors in the country and gained international recognition that brought them in talks with a Japanese manufacturer who shared its formula which became the birth of ISHIN. By placing their products on Shopee, Shirleen and Miguel made the most of the benefits of the app such as its wide user base and monthly campaigns.

ISHIN became a popular brand among Filipinos who aimed for a healthy and glowing complexion with its unique glutathione formula. For Shirleen and Miguel, their brand goes beyond giving Filipinos premium yet affordable beauty products. “We consider ISHIN to be a heart-based business, not just because of the reasonable prices we have but also how we want our success to pass to our distributors as well,” says Shirleen.

Shoppers who feel inclined to support local businesses with a heart can check out ISHIN at Shopee’s Beauty Budol Sale and get the ISHIN Advanced White. This item is made from a Japanese-tested formula with a unique blend of pearl powder, glutathione, NAC, and collagen that nourishes your skin for a healthy look. Users can also get premium glutathione at up to 20% off and up to 25% off flash deals on ISHIN products when they shop at the Beauty Budol Sale. From October 23 – 25, shoppers can enjoy up to 90% off and limited-time deals on health and beauty products from local beauty brands such as Jenna Essence, ISHIN and more, only at Shopee’s Beauty Budol Sale. Click here to know more.

In my opinion, local businesses will continue their operations in the community with their quality products & services they sell or cater to their customers or shoppers. Shoppers will continue to buy their goods and their company’s growth in sales will continue to increase, too.

  • Sugar shortage? Make life sweeter with Stevia!

Sugar shortage? Make life sweeter with Stevia!

The country has been undergoing a sugar shortage for the past few months, causing sugar prices to soar. The price surge of this kitchen staple has affected the purchasing power of Filipinos, who are already having difficulty coping with inflation. Given how sugar is a key ingredient in most dishes, many people have struggled to make their lives and dishes sweeter.

Fortunately, there’s a healthy alternative that can help solve Filipinos’ sugar woes. Stevia is a natural sweetener derived from the leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant. It is 300 times sweeter than sugar but has zero calories and does not cause spikes in blood sugar levels. It is better than chemical-based artificial sweeteners because it does not have any aftertaste or carry potential health risks.

This wonder plant can be used for baking, as a food enhancer for cooking, and to sweeten hot and cold drinks without guilt. What’s great about Stevia is how it sweetens food and beverages naturally, unlike sugar which has been linked to obesity and diabetes. Moreover, Stevia is considered nonglycemic, meaning it does not affect one’s blood pressure levels.

Given these health benefits, swapping Stevia with refined sugar can be a complete game changer for people who want to make healthier food and beverage choices and maintain a healthy weight range.

Understanding Stevia’s potential to address Filipinos’ sugary dilemma, Glorious Industrial & Development Corporation (GIDC), also known as the Stevia Company, launched a lineup of naturally-sweetened and healthy beverages. GIDC, the Stevia Company’s line-up of products under its Glorious brand, includes the Glorious 3in1 Premium Coffee and Glorious Iced Tea Mixes and the Sweet & Fit Stevia Tea.

“We understand how important sweetness is to Filipinos’ taste palette,” said Ms. Au De Leon, president, and CEO of GIDC, The Stevia Company. “By making Glorious available nationwide, we want to empower more Filipinos to discover a healthier way to make their lives sweeter.”

The company’s latest products are not only good for one’s body, but they taste great too. Hence, people don’t need to sacrifice flavor to care for their health. All Glorious beverages are sweetened with Stevia, and every teaspoon of Stevia is equivalent to three teaspoons of refined sugar.

Glorious Premium 3in1 Coffee Mix is a delicious coffee blend sweetened with Sweet & Fit Stevia. It is recommended for people with sugar-related concerns, weight watchers, and other health-conscious individuals. Sweet & Fit Stevia has zero calories, zero fat, zero sodium, zero carbohydrates, and zero cholesterol.

People who want to control their sugar intake can now sweeten up their lives and favorite fruit teas with Glorious Iced Tea Mixes. This product comes in three flavors: Red Berries, Lemon, and Cucumber. Meanwhile, Sweet & Fit Stevia Tea can be used to make other hot or cold beverages together with non-dairy milk or fresh fruits for a healthy little pick-me-up.

  • Samsung’s The Serif, the ‘It’ Girls’ choiceGeorgina, Jessica, and Martine fall head over heels with this stunning TV

Samsung’s The Serif, the ‘It’ Girls’ choice
Georgina, Jessica, and Martine fall head over heels with this stunning TV

When It Girls, Georgina Wilson, Jessica Wilson, and Martine Cajucom, aren’t on set for a shoot, you’ll find them relaxing in their chic homes, featuring luxe furniture and state-of-the-art entertainment systems. Despite each having her own distinct design taste, one thing they all have is a shared love for Samsung’s design-forward TV, The Serif.

“We all adore The Serif, so I’m not surprised,” says Georgina Wilson. “More than just another TV, I think of The Serif as more like a classic piece of furniture brought back from a gone by era, when things were made to look exquisite for beauty’s sake. I think that’s what Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec had in mind when designing it, TV the way you want it. It’s such a beauty that even my kids, Archie and Alfie, watch their favorite shows only on The Serif.” she explains.

Being a model, host, and now Marketing Director at Sunnies Studios and Sunnies Face, Georgina’s taste in design has grown quite eclectic. With The Serif exuding an avant-garde design that is both sensuous and sophisticated, she just had to have one.

    Beautiful from every angle

Like all Samsung TVs, The Serif was engineered with picture quality at top of mind. But to model and Sunnies Face Brand Manager, Jess Wilson, it’s the TV’s form-factor that really swept her off her feet.

“Everything is so well thought-out. Samsung really took everything into consideration when designing The Serif. The structure is simple but functional – I love how it can even double as a shelf,” she notes. “Its detachable stand makes it so versatile and doesn’t clutter the room. Samsung even thought of a cable management solution, hiding wires on the back panel of the TV and along its stand. Way ahead of the curve from other TVs.”

Sunnies Studios Creative Director Martine Cajucom shares a similar sentiment. While much can be said about all the high-tech bells and whistles of The Serif, at the end of the day, the pleasures it offer really all come down to aesthetics. The Serif, she avers, immerses you into an amazing visual experience.

“I’ve been eyeing The Serif for some time before getting it. You could say I can’t get my eyes off its distinctive design. Now I’m completely hooked, I made sure to get one for our place in Manila and in Australia,” she says.

Martine appreciates how Samsung goes beyond convention when designing products. In the case of The Serif, she said she never expected to be so impressed with the fusion of art and technology at work.

“The Serif looks unconventional yet also graceful and charming. Combine that with the kind of technology that Samsung is known for, that’s how all TVs should be,” she adds.

The Serif is more than just a pretty face – it’s a 4K QLED TV that delivers life-like picture and stunning colors that you’d expect from a Samsung TV. In addition, its Ambient Mode+ feature gives users the option to display eye-catching graphics and images on screen to further add to a room’s aesthetic.

The Serif has to be the “It” tech product among TV sets, exuding unique qualities that draw people like the life of the party.

Find out more about The Serif, and how its standout features can enhance your living spaces. Visit the official website at www.samsung.com/ph/.
