  • Six Considerations for Business Continuity in the Age of Telecommuting

Six Considerations for Business Continuity in the Age of Telecommuting

Across industries, organizations are now relying on telecommuting more than ever. While it has its short-term benefits, business leaders must also leverage the technology in a way that will lead to new opportunities and advancements down the line. In the world of cybersecurity, telecommuting is not considered to be a catalyst for revolutionary change in how organizations architect the security of their networks. Instead, it is seen as a catalyst for evolutionary change that could lead organizations and security leaders to an advanced position. In other words, the security decisions intended to support telecommuting could also help to build resiliency to defend against future cyberattacks.

Leveraging Available Technology to Enable Telecommuting
Below are six considerations for business leaders as they work to execute workforce-enabling goals, allowing their organizations to flourish securely when outside of traditional headquarters while avoiding substantial capital costs for new buildings.

    Enable Snoop-Resistant Connectivity

Teleworkers can connect to their organizations remotely with virtual private network (VPN) software. This software, which is likely already included on the employee’s endpoint computer, will enable snoop-resistant connectivity to remote company applications and data, ensuring maximum protection of assets.

    Employ Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Considering the lack of security controls in place when employees are working remotely, multi-factor authentication (MFA) is critical to protecting data. MFA could come in the form of combining something the remote user possesses – like a “token” on a cell phone – with something this person knows – like a password. This strategy will provide an extra level of security that ensures the user is the authorized employee he or she claims to be.

Leverage Wireless Access Points and Firewalls

Business leaders looking to enhance their telecommuting strategies further should consider leveraging easy-to-deploy wireless access points and firewalls to remote worksites. Pre-configured before they are shipped, these solutions can be automatically set up on-site via zero-touch deployment functionality, ensuring business continuity and support for those remote workers who need additional performance and functionality.

    Increase Agility of Communication Paths

Centralized offices typically feature always-on, dedicated communication links at their headquarters to accommodate the large number of users seated there. With SD-WAN, companies can agilely and securely choose the best communication path for their users at any given time. This strategy supports the changing communications patterns of remote workers, especially as telecommuting becomes more commonplace.

Get the Most Out of the Cloud

Teams that no longer have access to their headquarters’ desktop computers can deploy software applications in the cloud that look and perform like those on their computers in the office. The addition of cybersecurity solutions, such as the ability to support secure SSL connections from any browser to the cloud, enable users to securely access these applications and related data stored in the cloud without increasing complexity for the users or the security operations team.

    Focus on Self-Improvement

One benefit of telecommuting is the extra time that comes from not having to drive into the office every day. Business leaders and their employees should take the time to learn something new or simply refresh their knowledge – one example is taking an online cybersecurity training course to get ahead of the game. By taking the time typically spent commuting to expand their knowledge, individuals can build skills that could be extremely useful down the line.

    Final Thoughts

By focusing on the six considerations noted above, organizations can achieve a more effective and secure remote workforce model. These evolutionary steps toward the future combine core networks with the agility of the cloud and other connectivity solutions to extend the network’s edge beyond the traditional office environment. When combined with appropriate cybersecurity strategies across the edge, core network, and cloud, organizations can ensure business continuity from remote locations while laying the foundation for people and architectures of the future.

  • How Epson Inkjet’s Heat-Free Technology can help Businesses and the Environment

How Epson Inkjet’s Heat-Free Technology can help Businesses and the Environment

Printing is possibly one of society’s most important technological breakthroughs. The printing press, one of the earliest printing devices developed in China and later in Europe in the 1500s, revolutionized society as it allowed the mass production of books, pamphlets, and newspapers.[1] Since then, printers have become smaller and more functional, especially with the rise of new technologies enabling printers to do more than just printing.

Today’s printing devices have come a long way from dot-matrix printers, which use a printhead with metal needles to strike against an ink ribbon to print words onto paper. The introduction of tiny guns firing dots of ink directly on paper made modern-day printing more precise and able to translate more complex images on screen to print.

    Major printing technology shift

Among the standard printers nowadays are the inkjets, commonly used at home because of their lower print volume yet cost-efficient features. There are also laser printers, which use powder mixtures in toner cartridges. Traditionally, enterprises that require speed and higher print volumes utilize these printers.

With the advancements in technology, inkjet printers now have the speed and quality comparable to laser printers with the low-cost feature that inkjets are known for. Additionally, more and more enterprises are embracing inkjet printing for its lower environmental impact. In Southeast Asia alone, the ratio of inkjets sold compared to the total printer market increased from 79 to 82 percent from 2014 to 2018, according to an IDC report.[2]

Shaping the future with Heat-Free Technology

While laser and inkjet printers may look the same on the outside, it is what is on the inside that makes the difference. Laser printing typically employs a complex electrophotographic process from sending to receiving the print job. Inside a laser printer are several parts which require pre-reheating and fusing to melt the toner onto the paper. This process is the reason why printouts tend to be warm after the machine releases the paper out.

Inkjet printing, in contrast, involves only three stages: receiving the print job, ink ejection, and release of the printout. Heat, however, is still used as the ink undergoes thermal ejection. This process applies an electrical current to warm the ink and fire it through the printhead.

On the other hand, most of Epson inkjet printers, such as the Epson WorkForce Enterprise models, stand out from the rest with its next-generation PrecisionCore printhead technology. It is an advanced form of its proprietary Micro Piezo technology, which is considered as the backbone of every Epson inkjet printing system.

Micro Piezo printheads eject droplets of ink via mechanical pressure without requiring any heat, which separates Epson’s technology from all the other thermal inkjet systems. The mechanical pressure is created when piezoelectric elements in the printheads contract in response to an applied voltage. This Heat-Free Technology also serves as a common platform for all Epson inkjet printers, whether for the home or office.

Epson’s Heat-Free Technology can benefit enterprises and the environment in four ways:

Save time with its consistent high-speed printing. Requiring no heat to warm up when switched on or awoken from sleep, Epson Inkjet printers with Heat-Free Technology print immediately compared to laser printers, which need to pre-heat the fuser to print. There are also no delays caused by accumulated heat in the printhead, and consistent high-speed printing is ensured, even for documents with high-printing density.

For instance, when using the Epson WorkForce Enterprise C20590, it only takes 6.2 seconds for users to collect the first page.[3] This is due to Epson WorkForce Enterprise’s simple yet superior technology over laser printers.

WorkForce Enterprise C20590 also yields high-quality printouts at optimized printing speeds of up to 100ppm[4] in both simplex and duplex, due to its efficient “switchback” duplex paper path design. It also uses an electrostatic belt that ensures the paper is completely flat, ensuring smooth gradients and consistently sharp images.

Less power consumption saves energy and money. Epson inkjet printers have no fuser unit to heat, which results in significantly less energy consumption. The operating time and electricity consumption can also be optimized because unlike other printers, there are no delays caused by accumulated heat in the printhead.

These inkjet printers also need 85 percent less power to operate[5], which translates to lower energy costs, since printers account for about 10 percent of the energy consumption [6]of a typical office. What’s more, Epson inkjet printers also generate around 85 percent less carbon dioxide.[7], compared to laser printers.

Fewer replacement parts, lower environmental impact. Laser printers typically have more consumables and require periodic replacement of the drum, transfer belt and fuser. On the other hand, Epson inkjet printers use fewer parts that need replacing. The printheads are also not a consumable, thus, reducing the environmental burden of manufacturing and recycling additional resources.

Less intervention increases productivity. The Heat-Free structure of Epson inkjet printers means there are fewer parts that can fail, which reduces the amount of interventions required. Additionally, there is no heat damage to the printheads to guarantee that they last longer. Therefore, Epson inkjet printers offer improved reliability, significantly reduced downtime, and lower costs even in the long run.

With these benefits, enterprises can rely on Epson inkjet printers to satisfy their printing needs. With game-changing technologies like the Epson Heat-Free Technology, inkjet printers become even more efficient in boosting business operations, cutting costs, and mitigating environmental impacts.

  • URC, GBF design face shields to help augment requirements of essential workers

URC, GBF design face shields to help augment requirements of essential workers

Universal Robina Corporation (URC) and the Gokongwei Brothers Foundation (GBF) are currently producing much-needed face shields using URC’s available resources.

The Gokongwei-owned food firm has temporarily repurposed some parts of its production line to manufacture 100,000 reusable face shields vital to frontline health workers battling the coronavirus pandemic. According to GBF Director Grace Colet, these will go to some of the hospitals that have been at the forefront of the country’s efforts to slow the spread of the virus.

GBF is targeting over 25 beneficiaries including: Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, Philippine General Hospital, Lung Center of the Philippines, Philippine Heart Center, San Lazaro Hospital, Rizal Medical Center, East Avenue Medical Center, The Medical City and Chinese General Hospital.

Health workers using the face shields provided by URC and GBF.

“We (GBF) were experiencing problems securing our personal protective equipment (PPE) orders from suppliers,” related Colet “Sometimes they’ll back out a day or two even after placing the order. And prices were increasing. It was a struggle to secure the very valuable PPE that we needed for donation to our health workers.”

Colet related, “Being an engineer, David Lim of URC got inspired to study the design and make it more efficient in terms of using available resources. We consulted doctors and specialists from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) to ensure we are providing appropriate PPEs.”

URC senior vice-president for quality engineering, sustainability and technical services David Lim created the face shields, taking into consideration the urgency for these protective gears. “Some face shields are generally disposable. That’s why they had to make a lot. Our team decided to come up with a face shield design that can both be easily manufactured and is reusable,” he said.

For Dr. Maria Julieta Germar from PGH’s obstetrics and gynecology department, disinfecting URC’s face shield is easy because it doesn’t have foams. “The distance from the mask makes it easy for us to use goggles, loop and N95 masks underneath it. It is also not prone to fogging which is important when we do our surgeries,” she added.

According to Dr. Germar, the face shields are used by their medical personnel but later on, they intend to provide to patients who may need additional protection. URC’s face shields are made from just three basic materials, making mass production easier: a polypropylene (PP) strip that is 14mm thick and about a meter long; an 8-by-13-inch PET sheet; and some staples.

URC and GBF are providing face shields to several hospitals

The company buys the PET sheets and staples, but it produces the PP strips in its facility in Calamba, Laguna. With minimal materials needed, URC is able to produce 3,500 face shields a day at two of its production facilities in Laguna. To date, it has delivered 40,000 to various hospitals and will complete deliveries by May.

According to Lim, the demand for the face shields is continuously growing. “This COVID fight is a battle for everyone. It is an honor for URC to be able to contribute and collaborate with GBF and hospitals, with safety, quality and sustainability in mind. That is the URC way.”

The Gokongwei Group’s URC is one of the largest food and beverage manufacturing companies in the country, producing Filipino favorites like C2, Great Taste and Jack ‘n Jill snacks. Also from the same parent company is GBF, a foundation dedicated to contributing to the country’s progress by helping educate its workforce in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

  • 8 tips to help your TikToks stand out

8 tips to help your TikToks stand out

When you hear the song “Don’t Start Now” by English singer/songwriter Dua Lipa, what initially comes to mind? Do you imagine the visually stunning music video tied to it, or is your mind flooded with mental images of a plethora of dance covers on TikTok?

Indeed, TikTok has become a global phenomenon and, lately, has sort of become a therapy for most people especially in light of the community quarantines enforced worldwide. And with millions of active users on the platform, coming up with fresh and unique videos may seem like a daunting task.

Fear not because collecting plenty of views, likes, and followers on this rapidly growing platform is not impossible. Here are 8 tips on how to make Tik-Toks that stand out:

Immerse yourself in the “For You” page

Developing ideas and crafting them into your latest TikTok might be difficult due to the sea of clips already out there. But who says you can’t draw inspiration from these clips? Binge watch videos on the “For You” page to get a sense of what’s hot, what’s not, and what hasn’t been created yet.

    Use your own audio clips

While TikTok has a vast library of songs and audio clips, they are only offered in segments lasting no more than a minute. Got a favorite? Why not use a separate device to play audio clips of your choice. Be wary of copyright infringement though.

    Make every second count

To get a higher viewership count, make sure that the first few seconds of your TikTok has an impact that will easily reel people in. Try baked-in captions or brief and creative intros on your videos to entice viewers to watch your clips entirely.

Showcase your “talent,” but be yourself

TikTok is considered a safe space for people who want to explore and broadcast their skills and talents. Whether it’s dancing, singing, acting, cooking, or showing how talented you are at being talentless–that actually garners a lot of engagement–show the world what makes you, you. Just make sure to maintain authenticity because that is what the audience likes.

    Go all out

While you’re at it, make sure to give it your all and showcase the best version of you. Don’t be ashamed of being a bit “extra”. Put on your best outfits, apply makeup, and unleash a burst of energy–it’ll only be a few seconds anyway.

    Be relatable

Another way to make your TikToks stand out is to make them as relatable as possible. Try kickstarting ideas with a few unique questions like “How do I react during monumental scenes in a certain renowned movie?” or “How do I look when I wake up on different days of the week?”

    Add in multiple hashtags

Maybe you’re thinking: “…but having a ‘gazillion’ hashtags is so 2013.” While that may be true for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, there is certainly zero judgement on the use of hashtags by the TikTok community. In fact, using a ton of hashtags like #fyp and #tiktokph, increases your chances of landing on the “For You” page.

    Engage in a “Duet”

Joining forces with fellow “TikTokers” not only allows for wider audience engagement, but ensures a fun and interactive experience. Plus, you get to make new friends in the process.

    Bonus tip: Follow influential profiles

Much like in fashion and design, it’s always good to have pegs that are consistent with your style and taste. Follow your favorite TikTokers and celebrities to be in the loop for latest trends. And while you’re at it, follow the brand on TikTok at @vivophilippines to get fresh and creative updates on products and services.
