RGC/Uratex Group does its share in the continuing fight against the COVID-19 pandemic

As part of its service to the nation and unwavering support to humanitarian efforts in these trying times, the RGC/Uratex Group of Companies continues to do its share in the fight to alleviate the suffering of many Filipinos during this pandemic.

Just recently, the group lent a hand to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) and the Metro Manila mayors’ humanitarian response to address the rapid spread of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In coordination with PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Senator Richard Gordon, the RGC/Uratex Group of Companies donated a total of 1,000 mattresses and two food trucks through RGC/Uratex Group of Companies Corporate PR Director Bigboy Cheng to the project being initiated by the PRC and the Metro Manila mayors.

The project aims to add isolation facilities that come with complete services for COVID-19 patients. The facilities will have food trucks and food kitchens that will offer food for indigent/marginalized members of society who are in the facilities for treatment. The facilities will also have shower rooms, rest rooms and portable toilets that will be replaced daily to keep it clean and sanitary, plus ambulances on standby that will bring patients to available hospitals, according to Sen. Gordon.

The donation of 1,000 mattresses was just an initial contribution by the Group to the overall effort. This week, the company turned over an additional 1,000 mattresses, for the use of the facilities under the project.

“We would like to thank Senator Gordon, the PRC, and the Metro Manila mayors for giving us the opportunity to assist in their effort to ease the congestion in hospitals by providing mattresses for their isolation facilities. I believe that through the cooperation of different sectors, we will finally be able to combat the threat of COVID-19,” said Cheng.

Providing assistance in several humanitarian activities has always been a part of the RGC/Uratex Group of Companies’ service to the nation. Last year, as the pandemic caused the issuance of several lockdowns and community quarantines, the Uratex/RGC Group provided support wherever it is necessary. It dedicated more or less 80 percent of its total Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) budget to COVID-19 response to show its #Malasakit and gratitude to the nation.

Among the items donated by Uratex to hospitals and quarantine facilities in 2020 were mattresses, cut-away foam for face shields, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for medical frontliners, “Prone Pillows,” a customized pillow designed to help alleviate breathing issues of COVID-19 patients under a mechanical ventilator. There were also donations of COVID-19 equipment, cash and relief packages to employees, subcontractors and promodizers, who are very much a part of the Uratex business.

Just recently, the company announced a vaccination program for all its employees within the Group. This is to assure that all its employees, and even their families, will remain protected against the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the COVID-19 disease as they continue to perform their work at the various Uratex plants nationwide.

“As a company, we cannot just stand and watch while the country suffers. We thought we had to do something. #Malasakit has always part of the company’s DNA, which started from its founder, Mr. Robert Cheng. We are just continuing his vision of a ‘people-first’ philosophy, especially during challenging times like this,” Cheng added.

  • Good sleep for better health

    Good sleep for better health

While many problems in sleeping are commonly attributable to aging, it may not be the case anymore, according to the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM).

In a global press release, WASM says that in a research, “approximately 50 percent of older adults report difficulty sleeping. But sleep problems in older adults are less a result of aging itself and more related to other conditions that may accompany aging.”

These conditions include respiratory disorders, changes in sleep cycles or rhythms, medical and psychiatric illness and increased medicine use. Thus, these conditions may result to sleeping disturbances that would eventually lead to “less quality of life, depression and anxiety, slower reaction time, memory problems, issues with balance and vision increasing risk of falls, and even death,” the press release noted.

Which explains why, in this year’s celebration of “World Sleep Day,” an annual event that focuses on the celebration of sleep and a call to action versus important sleep-related issues, WASM chose the theme “Good Sleep, Healthy Aging” in order to elicit attention on common sleep disturbances among older adults. The group said that “getting a good night’s sleep is possible at any age—and it is vitally important for overall health.”

Just like the rest of the world, many Filipinos also suffer from sleep problems. Their conditions or sleep complaints are no different from Americans, French, Germans, or even the Chinese, Japanese, Indians or Indonesians.

That is why here in the Philippines, Uratex, the brand known for making quality foams and mattresses, continues on its advocacy in helping Filipinos get that good sleep by coming up with superior bed products.

And in relation to the celebration of World Sleep Day 2013, Uratex will support a major sleep symposium mounted by the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine happening in the country.

Prior to the event, the two sleep medicine specialists—Dr.Teofilo Lee-Chiong Jr., M.D. and Dr. Deborah Bernardo—were introduced by Uratex to the media today via a press briefing.

Dr.Teofilo Lee-Chiong Jr., M.D., is a Professor of Medicine at the National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado, USA and has authored or edited several books on sleep medicine and pulmonary medicine. He is the Chief Medical Liaison at Philips Respironics and is a member of various sleep associations in the United States. He graduated from the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center.

Dr. Deborah Bernardo, on the other hand, is also a graduate of the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center, and a Fellow of the Philippine College of Physicians, Philippine Neurological Association and the Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine. She trained in sleep medicine at the National Jewish Health in Denver, Colorado and is now the Head of the Comprehensive Sleep Disorders Center and Chief of the Neurology Section of St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City.

Together, the two sleep experts will talk about how Filipinos can get their good night sleep plus other ways in order to achieve good sleep regardless of their age and benefit from it in order to live healthy lives.

Ah, the mattress. Next to buying healthy food, a mattress that fully supports our body for a restful sleep should be a priority. It doesn’t really have to be a fancy-looking mattress; as long as it functions well in protecting our body, relieving us of pain and other discomfort while we sleep so that we may be recharged the next day, the mattress should be perfect.
