    Siblings Billie and Ann Dumaliang call on more youth to care for the environment.

    Women are changing the landscape. Some, more literal than others. Meet Billie & Ann Dumaliang, the two sisters behind the massively successful initiative to preserve and promote the Masungi Georeserve in Rizal Province. This Women’s Month, PLDT Home tells their empowering story through the #SheConnects video campaign.

    Known to many as an ecotourism site, the real journey of the acclaimed Masungi Georeserve is a story to behold. Billie & Ann grew up loving and enjoying the scenery of their area since they were kids. Before it became a sanctuary, the assault of poachers and landgrabbers caused severe damage to its flora and fauna.

    Inspired by their mutual love for the land, and by the example of their father, the sisters took up the call to act. Billie left a profitable brand manager position and locked arms with her sister Ann and expanded their family’s efforts to fight for the land they love. The two sisters then launched an expedition to reclaim and restore the forest and protect it, at all costs.

    “There is a lot of opportunity to make a difference in the environment field. There is momentum, and while it is very difficult, it is also very rewarding and fulfilling.” Said the sisters in a recent interview. When asked about the dangers in the field that they operate in, they said, “Yes, there are indeed inherent risks to conservation work. We manage these risks through learning best practices from the experts and our mentors, and also by forming alliances. It is important to assess each situation differently and react appropriately, when the need arises.”

    Dubbed as among the ‘women masters’ for PLDT Home’s Women’s Month Campaign, the two sisters share their excitement in telling their story to inspire and call on other women to become champions of the environment, as well. Billie shares, “I am proud that even despite our physical limitations, we can do as much as men can. We are honored to be recognized as champions and to be with other amazing women who, like us, are very passionate in empowering our generation through our collective advocacies.”

    Asked about the importance of having connections and influencing one another, the sisters added, “We recognize that we cannot win these fights alone. We need the help of all sectors to be able to create long-lasting change for the landscape we are trying to conserve. It is important to come together with different people like women and mothers to be able to change mindsets and cultivate new behaviors.”

As the voice for PLDT Home’s campaign this Valentine’s Day, Moira once again captivates the hearts with a song that speaks the true meaning of love.  

    In its Valentine’s Campaign, PLDT Home highlights the importance of choosing to love amidst all circumstances and challenges. While the internet and social media have become important platforms for free expression and open dialogue, the #ChooseToLove campaign reminds everyone to always choose love over hate, divisiveness, fear and rejection.

Love against all odds, even if the world seems to disapprove, no one can question the power of a person’s great true love.     Many families are now looking forward to the start of the new year at home. Despite the hardships and challenges that the past months of quarantine have posed, there are still so many things that everyone can be thankful for, especially that staying safe at home has brought everyone closer together.

    When everybody welcomed the new decade full of hopes and excitement, no one could have predicted how a health crisis would put an indefinite pause on their plans and resolutions for the year. However, radio personality and wonder-mom Riki Flo felt blessed to have spent the time in quarantine with the company of her loving family.

    She says, “I realized that spending time at home with people you love the most is a luxury, and when life got too real, I was reminded of that. And though we may not have had as many adventures outside this year, we made many memories at home and that allowed us to become closer.”

    Bonding in the new normal

    When the news of the lockdown first broke in the country, Riki remembers how she prepared for the quarantine by purchasing art supplies for her children. A mother of two young and energetic kids, Calix and Dandy, she knew that the isolation would be a difficult period of adjustment for them and wanted to brighten things up.

    “Being isolated from the world is tough and if we were going to be holed up for a while, I wanted them to enjoy themselves at home. I bought different art supplies and creative materials in case they wanted to experiment and make crafts,” she said.

    She also introduced her little ones to the world of gardening. Lately, their family has been nurturing a newfound love for plants, flowers, and even insects. This little hobby of theirs has also turned out to be a learning experience as they would be looking up the species and reading more about them on the internet.

    Embracing the new digital lifestyle

    Going online has not just been a source of latest news, updates, and additional knowledge for Riki’s family. She goes as far as to say that the internet has made life in quarantine more bearable for her and her kids.

We also enjoyed family movie nights by watching new and old films together, and we even fell in love with K-pop,” she expresses.     One thing that Riki is grateful for in this year is how she was able to understand her family more. She says, “As a mom, I can say that I saw and learned more about my kids, about their interests and their talents. I wouldn’t have been able to get closer to them if I wasn’t working from home.”

    She also adds, “It’s all about being patient with the kids and learning how to stretch things out. It’s very important that we can support and guide them as these experiences and memories are part of their childhood.”

    PLDT Home launches a FREE virtual concert on July 14, 2020 themed “At Home with PLDT: No Learner Left Behind” for the benefit of students, teachers, and schools in partnership with PLDT-Smart Foundation.     The virtual concert gathers Filipino musical artists led by National Artist for Music Maestro Ryan Cayabyab together with OPM icons Regine Velasquez-Alcasid alongside husband, Ogie, Martin Nievera, and Pops Fernandez. The concert will be hosted by comedian and theater actor Jon Santos and directed by the award-winning concert director Paolo Valenciano.
