Holcim products listed on procurement website for green builders

As the global leader in building solutions LafargeHolcim Group recently unveiled bold plans to further improve environmental performance, local unit Holcim Philippines, Inc.’s cement offerings were listed on an online platform that guides contractors looking for materials and services for green building projects.

Holcim Solido, Holcim Excel, and Holcim Wallright, which are designed for infrastructure, general purpose and masonry, are now listed on the Green Building Procurement Hub (Green Building/PH), a website that identifies products, services, and building spaces with green credentials. Green Building/PH is a service provided for the members of the Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC), an organization that accredits buildings for following or exceeding environmental standards.

The company explains on Green Building/PH that Holcim Solido, Holcim Excel and Holcim Wallright are environment friendly because these are produced with lower greenhouse gas emissions and overall carbon footprint compared with Ordinary Portland Cement.

The company added that the products use mineral additives that reduce their content of clinker, the carbon-intensive component of cement and produced with low carbon-alternative fuels. The company is also working to have its range of dry mix mortar products listed on Green Building/PH.

Holcim Philippines President and CEO John Stull: “This is part of our commitment to contribute to sustainable development in the country by supplying products that have lower environmental footprint while meeting the performance requirements of builders. As construction activity in the country continues, our partners can count on us to provide them with building solutions that are respectful of nature and ensure quality structures.”

This development comes as the LafargeHolcim Group unveiled during the New York Climate Conference on Sept. 21, 2020 new commitments to accelerate the 20% reduction in carbon intensity of cement production by 2030 to contribute to the global effort of holding temperature changes to 1.5 degrees Celsius. To achieve this, LafargeHolcim will increase low-carbon and carbon neutral offerings, use more recycled materials as alternative fuels and raw materials among others.

LafargeHolcim CEO Jan Jenisch: “I believe in building a world that works for people and the planet. That’s why we are reinventing how the world builds today to make it greener with low-carbon and circular solutions. I am very excited to be working with Science Based Targets Initiative, taking a rigorous science-based approach to shape our net zero roadmap and accelerating our efforts to substantially lower our CO2 footprint. I will not stop pushing the boundaries to lead the way in green construction.”

Holcim Philippines is committed to reduce its net carbon emissions per ton of cementitious material in line with the LafargeHolcim Group’s targets to reduce its carbon footprint. Holcim Philippines has been making progress in this goal by producing more blended cements, increasing usage of alternative fuels and continuing improvement of operations for more efficient energy use.

Holcim Philippines actively supports the reduction of carbon emissions of the cement industry as committed through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Philippine government, a signatory of the Paris Agreement. The NDC includes mitigation options for the Philippine cement industry such as transition to low-carbon products.

Holcim eyes roll out of one-day road repair concrete in Davao, Baguio

Holcim Philippines will roll out its SFCrete road repair solution outside Metro Manila to help partners lessen disruption from rehabilitation of busy urban thoroughfares.

Leading cement manufacturer Holcim Philippines, Inc. is planning to make available its one-day concrete SuperFast(SF) Crete outside the National Capita Region to support contractors looking to participate in government road repair projects in other urban areas and help lessen disruption to commuters .

The company recently held a webinar to promote SFCrete among road contractors in Metro Manila, who expressed strong interest in using the building solution in their projects. The company also plans to offer SFCrete to contractor partners in Davao and Baguio, who are interested in lessening closure time of thoroughfares due to repairs. Since its launch in 2016, SFCrete has been used to repair close to 15 kilometers of roads all over Metro Manila.

Holcim Philippines Senior Vice President for Marketing and Innovation noted that SFCrete is only one of the two one-day concrete solutions accredited by Department of Public Works and Highways. He added that SFCrete can help the government reduce disruption from the rehabilitation of main roads in urban areas. With SFCrete, roads can be reopened in 24 hours after repairs compared with regular concrete, which needs three to 14 days for curing.

“SFCrete is part of the company’s thrust to provide building solutions to support local partners engaged in the country’s infrastructure upgrades including road rehabilitation. We are committed to further introducing these construction solutions to help the country build better,” he added.

Maganti said that aside from the proven performance of SFCrete in fast curing time and concrete strength, contractors are provided superior technical support in optimizing the design of concrete. Furthermore, SFCrete is also useful today in keeping workers safe as its superior workability enables contractors to deploy less people and follow social distancing guidelines in projects. Partners may also avail of Holcim’s trainings on cement and concrete technology, SFCrete application, road construction and road safety to help them build better.

Holcim advocates embedding sustainability in COVID recovery programs

Holcim Philippines’ Plan 2030 targets are designed to support the achievement of the United Nation’s Sustainability Goals.

Leading cement manufacturer Holcim Philippines, Inc. reiterated its commitment to improving environmental and social performance as it supported calls for COVID-19 recovery programs to be aligned with efforts to address larger sustainability challenges.

Holcim Philippines President and CEO John Stull: “We are determined to help where we can to ensure that new ways of doing business supports the overall efforts to preserve gains in improving the quality of life for people all over the world and build resilience against similar global challenges.”

On 20 May, over 150 global corporations released a joint statement urging governments all over the world to align socio-economic recovery programs for COVID-19 with actions that build resilience against future shocks caused by climate change. Global building solutions leader LafargeHolcim Group is among the signatories to the statement.

LafargeHolcim CEO Jan Jenisch: “At LafargeHolcim, we are going back to business firmly committed to building a healthier world together. More than ever, we want to demonstrate leadership by connecting the dots between this unprecedented health crisis and the need for a sustainable recovery.”

The Group noted that 50% of research resources are focused on low-carbon products, with 40% of patents currently in this area. Over 40 million tons of wastes were processed as Alternative Fuel and Alternative Raw Material while a third of sales were in sustainable solutions such as carbon-neutral concrete in 2019.

LafargeHolcim’s gains in these areas were recently recognized by Sustainalytics, a global leader in environmental, social and governance risks (ESG) and corporate governance research and ratings. Sustainalytics rated LafargeHolcim as first among 101 construction materials companies and in the top 20% of all 12,000 companies assessed across all sectors.

As a member of LafargeHolcim, Holcim Philippines is committed to supporting the achievement of targets aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainability Goals. The company has made good progress in lessening the environmental footprint of operations and offerings as well as uplifting its communities.

As of 2019, Holcim Philippines has progressed in its 2030 targets of reducing carbon emissions by 40% vs. 1990 levels and freshwater withdrawal per ton of cement by 30% vs. 2015. Among the drivers of its lower emissions are its introduction of more blended cement options and use of low-carbon fuels.

Last year, Solido, a blended cement designed as a better alternative to Ordinary Portland Cement for roads and light infrastructures, sales became a significant portion of Holcim’s product mix in 2019 with its lower environmental footprint among its main selling points.

Holcim also used more than 170,000 tons of alternative fuel and alternative raw material processed from biomass and waste materials from industries. This helped the company avoid coal in cement production for 38 days leading while helping its partners manage their wastes in an eco-friendly manner.

Furthermore, corporate citizenship programs under Holcim Helps benefitted 229,170 individuals last year. With this, the company has helped more than 800,000 people since 2015, surpassing its commitment to the LafargeHolcim Group of assisting 400,000 people by 2020.
