Samsung QLED TVs Receive Safety Verification from Leading Safety Certification Institutes

SEOUL, Korea – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced recently its QLED 8K and 4K TVs have received “no photobiological LED hazard” verifications from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a leading safety science company in the U.S., and “eye safety” certification from Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE) in Germany. Samsung becomes the first in the TV industry to receive verifications proving that various types of lights emitted by its QLED TVs pose no photobiological LED hazard, based on classifications under the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission)’s standards for photobiological safety and eye.

Both safety certification institutions, UL and VDE, tested the 65Q900T 8K model and 65Q90T 4K models – both of which emit the brightest light among Samsung’s 2020 QLED TV lineup – for their blue light, ultraviolet rays and infrared rays.

“While Samsung QLED TVs emit high luminance and brightness, our TVs are designed to protect the eyesight without losing the truly immersive viewing experience,” said Yong Hoon Choi, Executive Vice President of the Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “We are pleased to be recognized by UL and VDE for these efforts and will continue to make the safety of our customers a top priority as we develop our products.”

  • How Epson Inkjet’s Heat-Free Technology can help Businesses and the Environment

How Epson Inkjet’s Heat-Free Technology can help Businesses and the Environment

Printing is possibly one of society’s most important technological breakthroughs. The printing press, one of the earliest printing devices developed in China and later in Europe in the 1500s, revolutionized society as it allowed the mass production of books, pamphlets, and newspapers.[1] Since then, printers have become smaller and more functional, especially with the rise of new technologies enabling printers to do more than just printing.

Today’s printing devices have come a long way from dot-matrix printers, which use a printhead with metal needles to strike against an ink ribbon to print words onto paper. The introduction of tiny guns firing dots of ink directly on paper made modern-day printing more precise and able to translate more complex images on screen to print.

    Major printing technology shift

Among the standard printers nowadays are the inkjets, commonly used at home because of their lower print volume yet cost-efficient features. There are also laser printers, which use powder mixtures in toner cartridges. Traditionally, enterprises that require speed and higher print volumes utilize these printers.

With the advancements in technology, inkjet printers now have the speed and quality comparable to laser printers with the low-cost feature that inkjets are known for. Additionally, more and more enterprises are embracing inkjet printing for its lower environmental impact. In Southeast Asia alone, the ratio of inkjets sold compared to the total printer market increased from 79 to 82 percent from 2014 to 2018, according to an IDC report.[2]

Shaping the future with Heat-Free Technology

While laser and inkjet printers may look the same on the outside, it is what is on the inside that makes the difference. Laser printing typically employs a complex electrophotographic process from sending to receiving the print job. Inside a laser printer are several parts which require pre-reheating and fusing to melt the toner onto the paper. This process is the reason why printouts tend to be warm after the machine releases the paper out.

Inkjet printing, in contrast, involves only three stages: receiving the print job, ink ejection, and release of the printout. Heat, however, is still used as the ink undergoes thermal ejection. This process applies an electrical current to warm the ink and fire it through the printhead.

On the other hand, most of Epson inkjet printers, such as the Epson WorkForce Enterprise models, stand out from the rest with its next-generation PrecisionCore printhead technology. It is an advanced form of its proprietary Micro Piezo technology, which is considered as the backbone of every Epson inkjet printing system.

Micro Piezo printheads eject droplets of ink via mechanical pressure without requiring any heat, which separates Epson’s technology from all the other thermal inkjet systems. The mechanical pressure is created when piezoelectric elements in the printheads contract in response to an applied voltage. This Heat-Free Technology also serves as a common platform for all Epson inkjet printers, whether for the home or office.

Epson’s Heat-Free Technology can benefit enterprises and the environment in four ways:

Save time with its consistent high-speed printing. Requiring no heat to warm up when switched on or awoken from sleep, Epson Inkjet printers with Heat-Free Technology print immediately compared to laser printers, which need to pre-heat the fuser to print. There are also no delays caused by accumulated heat in the printhead, and consistent high-speed printing is ensured, even for documents with high-printing density.

For instance, when using the Epson WorkForce Enterprise C20590, it only takes 6.2 seconds for users to collect the first page.[3] This is due to Epson WorkForce Enterprise’s simple yet superior technology over laser printers.

WorkForce Enterprise C20590 also yields high-quality printouts at optimized printing speeds of up to 100ppm[4] in both simplex and duplex, due to its efficient “switchback” duplex paper path design. It also uses an electrostatic belt that ensures the paper is completely flat, ensuring smooth gradients and consistently sharp images.

Less power consumption saves energy and money. Epson inkjet printers have no fuser unit to heat, which results in significantly less energy consumption. The operating time and electricity consumption can also be optimized because unlike other printers, there are no delays caused by accumulated heat in the printhead.

These inkjet printers also need 85 percent less power to operate[5], which translates to lower energy costs, since printers account for about 10 percent of the energy consumption [6]of a typical office. What’s more, Epson inkjet printers also generate around 85 percent less carbon dioxide.[7], compared to laser printers.

Fewer replacement parts, lower environmental impact. Laser printers typically have more consumables and require periodic replacement of the drum, transfer belt and fuser. On the other hand, Epson inkjet printers use fewer parts that need replacing. The printheads are also not a consumable, thus, reducing the environmental burden of manufacturing and recycling additional resources.

Less intervention increases productivity. The Heat-Free structure of Epson inkjet printers means there are fewer parts that can fail, which reduces the amount of interventions required. Additionally, there is no heat damage to the printheads to guarantee that they last longer. Therefore, Epson inkjet printers offer improved reliability, significantly reduced downtime, and lower costs even in the long run.

With these benefits, enterprises can rely on Epson inkjet printers to satisfy their printing needs. With game-changing technologies like the Epson Heat-Free Technology, inkjet printers become even more efficient in boosting business operations, cutting costs, and mitigating environmental impacts.

  • 8 tips to help your TikToks stand out

8 tips to help your TikToks stand out

When you hear the song “Don’t Start Now” by English singer/songwriter Dua Lipa, what initially comes to mind? Do you imagine the visually stunning music video tied to it, or is your mind flooded with mental images of a plethora of dance covers on TikTok?

Indeed, TikTok has become a global phenomenon and, lately, has sort of become a therapy for most people especially in light of the community quarantines enforced worldwide. And with millions of active users on the platform, coming up with fresh and unique videos may seem like a daunting task.

Fear not because collecting plenty of views, likes, and followers on this rapidly growing platform is not impossible. Here are 8 tips on how to make Tik-Toks that stand out:

Immerse yourself in the “For You” page

Developing ideas and crafting them into your latest TikTok might be difficult due to the sea of clips already out there. But who says you can’t draw inspiration from these clips? Binge watch videos on the “For You” page to get a sense of what’s hot, what’s not, and what hasn’t been created yet.

    Use your own audio clips

While TikTok has a vast library of songs and audio clips, they are only offered in segments lasting no more than a minute. Got a favorite? Why not use a separate device to play audio clips of your choice. Be wary of copyright infringement though.

    Make every second count

To get a higher viewership count, make sure that the first few seconds of your TikTok has an impact that will easily reel people in. Try baked-in captions or brief and creative intros on your videos to entice viewers to watch your clips entirely.

Showcase your “talent,” but be yourself

TikTok is considered a safe space for people who want to explore and broadcast their skills and talents. Whether it’s dancing, singing, acting, cooking, or showing how talented you are at being talentless–that actually garners a lot of engagement–show the world what makes you, you. Just make sure to maintain authenticity because that is what the audience likes.

    Go all out

While you’re at it, make sure to give it your all and showcase the best version of you. Don’t be ashamed of being a bit “extra”. Put on your best outfits, apply makeup, and unleash a burst of energy–it’ll only be a few seconds anyway.

    Be relatable

Another way to make your TikToks stand out is to make them as relatable as possible. Try kickstarting ideas with a few unique questions like “How do I react during monumental scenes in a certain renowned movie?” or “How do I look when I wake up on different days of the week?”

    Add in multiple hashtags

Maybe you’re thinking: “…but having a ‘gazillion’ hashtags is so 2013.” While that may be true for Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, there is certainly zero judgement on the use of hashtags by the TikTok community. In fact, using a ton of hashtags like #fyp and #tiktokph, increases your chances of landing on the “For You” page.

    Engage in a “Duet”

Joining forces with fellow “TikTokers” not only allows for wider audience engagement, but ensures a fun and interactive experience. Plus, you get to make new friends in the process.

    Bonus tip: Follow influential profiles

Much like in fashion and design, it’s always good to have pegs that are consistent with your style and taste. Follow your favorite TikTokers and celebrities to be in the loop for latest trends. And while you’re at it, follow the brand on TikTok at @vivophilippines to get fresh and creative updates on products and services.

  • EMS Group: Empowering Workforce, Gearing up for FIRe

EMS Group: Empowering Workforce, Gearing up for FIRe

Like many other organizations, the EMS Group of Companies has been innovating its business to keep up with the ever-changing world of business. As one of the private Filipino-owned groups in the country’s electronics manufacturing industry, it saw how inevitable these transformations are to remain competitive and stay true to its value of growing with its pool of Filipino talents.

This mindset has led to EMS surviving the global financial crisis in 2009, which has affected and wiped out at least 90 percent of its production output. At that time, EMS has already grown its workforce from 800 people to at least 1,800.

But, according to EMS Group Chairman and CEO Ferdinand “Perry” Ferrer, instead of layoffs, they decided to retrain their workers to learn new skills—this is what his father, the late Francis Ferrer, former president of the Ayala-led Integrated Micro-electronics, Inc., told him to go about the problem.

EMS Group spent the next year and its resources to retrain their workforce through the Alliance Mansols, Inc., an EMS subsidiary established in 2010. In 2011, the gamble paid off as the retraining program yielded a substantial pool of manpower that can run the idle plants affected by the global economic crisis. These talents manned the plants’ production processes, from value engineering to quality control, among others.

Aside from the parent company, EMS Components Assembly, Inc., established in 2004, as well as the Alliance Mansols, Inc., the EMS Group also put up other companies. This includes the Creotec Philippines Inc.; EMS Resources Technology Inc.; EMS Services Philippines Inc., and EMS Services International, Inc. EMS Services International also opened recently its office in Japan.

Innovation as a key to ensuring success

For Perry, the willingness to change and innovate can help any company to succeed. “If we did not change and innovate, our company would have been shut down. So, we constantly innovate while still sticking to our core competency, which is the semiconductor and electronics assembly,” he said.

As automation and digitalization become a significant part of today’s workplaces, EMS embarks on another big change as it aims to empower further its workforce with modern resource planning (ERP) system as part of the company’s digital transformation strategy. The project aims to bolster EMS Group’s productivity by upgrading its systems with SAP S/4HANA, which will be hosted on the Fujitsu Cloud to enable EMS Group’s cloud integration and Hybrid IT strategy.

As a fully integrated ERP system, SAP S/4HANA allows organizations to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to transform business processes both in the cloud and on-premise. It will also improve business operations by automating its systems and reducing manual processes.

With the modern ERP system in place, EMS will now have a credible source of information across companies within the finance, procurement, inventory, operations, engineering, quality, and maintenance processes. The system will also improve financial reporting and analysis by accurately capturing and recording all cost revenue information across several revenue streams.

    Lighting up the FIRe

EMS also considers this project as one of its ways to activate its Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIRe), or the IR 4.0, digital transformation journey. “It may sound cliché because we have repeatedly talked about it but, the Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) is now right in our doorsteps. Our adoption of the new ERP system, which utilizes AI and Cloud, is one of our ways to prepare for it,” Perry said.

The FIRe, essentially, refers to the overall shift toward digital platforms. Modern digital technologies and applications will transform nearly every industry and sector, including the semiconductor and electronics industry. “We have been planning to integrate this modern ERP system for five years before we decided to partner with Fujitsu. We want to set an example for Filipino companies, that as we move to IR 4.0, we can empower, maintain, and even grow our more than 17,000 workers with technology as it will attract more business,” Perry said.

    Dealing with change

Perry pointed out, on the other hand, that the automation of their processes is a major transformation for the organization. “From a semi or mostly manual processes to now having a fully integrated and digital system to tackle them, is a big change for us, even for our operators, which compose 92% of our total workforce,” he said. “Acceptance will be the biggest challenge. SAP S/4HANA is already a tried and tested system but, the way we adapt it internally will dictate our transformation moving forward.”

Perry noted that it is important to maintain the collaboration within the departments and all levels in the organization. It is critical to let all the employees understand the benefits of the new system, including the opportunity of learning new skills needed in utilizing the system. “There will be a lot of resistance, especially that we are going to change their work. Most people do not like change but, we want to make sure that we show them its benefits so, they will accept it,” he said.

    Keeping employees motivated

Aside from the benefits of changing digitally, Perry said that taking on this transformation all boils down to providing opportunities to upskill Filipino talents and help them grow with the company.

For more than 24 years, Perry has worked outside the country, working as a high-ranking executive for different companies in Europe, the United States, Canada, and China. He also has no plans of coming back to the Philippines but, when his father asked to help him in managing EMS, he decided to take on the challenge.

“I managed several factories abroad and, all I was after then were EPS. When you come in here, you’ll realize that it’s not about the dollars and cents but, it’s the people. When you see them improve their lives while they help your company grow, that changes your perspectives,” Perry said. Filipinos are excellent workers and for that, I will always fight for them. The only problem we have is sometimes, we stop the growth of our local talents. Until now, our primary objective is to do that. Every decision we make is all towards the idea of ‘will it help the Filipinos?’”

Since then, Perry has been passionate about helping hone Filipino talents, especially in the semiconductor and electronics industry. “We have a lot of things that we can be proud of. A lot of the electronic parts out there, such as in cars or the satellite dishes in the United States, are made by Filipinos, but they are inside another product,” Perry said.

And so, to keep the employees motivated, Perry said that they ensure that all of them feel welcomed and get equal opportunities to grow. “We do not call them by their ID numbers. We always make it a point to talk to them personally to talk, not about the business and work, but their dreams, aspirations, and even about their family,” he noted.

A Unique approach to digital transformation

As EMS Group’s implementing partner for the project, Fujitsu brings its unique approach to driving digital transformation through co-creation. This approach enables the company to deliver value through digital solutions suited to tackle the specific needs of its partners.

“Now, more than ever, businesses have all the available systems and solutions, which they can integrate into their systems using the Fujitsu Cloud. Our team is more than excited about this project with the EMS Group and, we look forward to supporting its vision for digital transformation through this partnership,” said Raul “Cricket” Santiago, Fujitsu Philippines CEO and President.

With 45 years of local presence and expertise, Fujitsu Philippines provides businesses with cutting-edge IT solutions and services nationwide. It also offers cloud technology that provides relevant and cost-efficient IT solutions to all organizations of various sizes and needs.

  • Epson named number one projector brand in the Philippines and worldwide for 19 consecutive years

Epson named number one projector brand in the Philippines and worldwide for 19 consecutive years

Epson has been named the number one projector brand in the Philippines and SE Asia, as well as worldwide by Futuresource Consulting, having held the leadership position for 19 consecutive years. The milestone reflects Epson’s continued market leadership and constant innovation in the visual imaging industry.

Epson’s worldwide market share for projectors have increased consistently over the last 19 years to maintain its continued dominance. The latest findings from Futuresource indicate that Epson continues to dominate the Philippine market as the number one brand, with 62.4% market share for projectors 500 lumens and above for 2019, an increase from 47.6% in 2018.

Within Southeast Asia, Epson continues to maintain market leadership, with market share increasing to 44.4% in 2019 from 37% in 2018. Globally, Epson has the largest market share worldwide for projectors, at 41.4% for 2019, which is an increase from 37.4% in 2018. Likewise for the home projectors segment, in 2019, Epson has achieved the largest market share worldwide at a remarkable 35%.

A key factor to Epson’s continued dominance is in its continuous innovation. New launches in Southeast Asia include the launch of its new retail, education, corporate and home projectors, including the EB-U50/EB-W50 for digital signage applications, the EB-1485Fi ultrashort throw interactive laser projector and the EB-1070U/1060U series of business projectors respectively. The launch of its home cinema projectors, the EF-100 series, EH-TW7000 and EB-LS500 contributed to its growth in the home projector segment.

At the heart of Epson’s projectors is its proprietary 3LCD technology, which enables Epson projectors to deliver the most vibrant and true-to-life images with up to 3 times higher colour brightness compared to 1-chip DLP projectors in the market. In contrast to 3-chip 3LCD projectors, 1-chip DLP projectors use a rotating color wheel that spins at a rapid speed, only displaying colors sequentially, which can result in color break-up or the “rainbow effect”.

Epson’s vertically-integrated business model means the company creates its own core technologies and manufactures and sells its finished products, maintaining control over the whole process and ensuring quality down to the smallest detail in the manufacturing of its projectors.

Epson continues to innovate in its projector offerings for its range of business, interactive, high brightness and home projectors, catering across segments from corporate to education, rentals, staging and large entertainment venues and home entertainment.

“We aim to continually deliver new innovation and bring new value to our customers as we focus on driving growth in the B2B segment, and to further engage customers in the education, corporate and rental and staging space,” said Eduardo Bonoan, General Manager for Marketing said.

Data from Futuresource Quarterly Market Insight Reports. Sell-in volumes, representing at least 95% of the worldwide market, are collected from manufacturers each quarter. Data is cross-checked with inputs from distribution channels and component suppliers. This data collection methodology enables Futuresource to accurately size the Projectors Market and provide detailed brand, specification and application shares in over 66 countries worldwide.
