  • Shopee Launches 12.12 Big Christmas Sale, Celebrates 5 Years of Digital Acceleration in the Region

Shopee Launches 12.12 Big Christmas Sale, Celebrates 5 Years of Digital Acceleration in the Region

Shopee highlights three key trends which have shaped and will continue to drive the growth of e-commerce in 2021 and beyond: Social, Personalization, and Integration

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, wraps up the year-end sales season and marks its fifth birthday by launching its annual 12.12 Big Christmas Sale. Its recent 9.9, 10.10, and 11.11 shopping events set new records and signified the changing landscape and potential of e-commerce in the region. This 12.12, Shopee celebrates five years of digital acceleration in the region and highlights three key trends that have shaped and will continue to drive the growth of e-commerce: Social, Personalization, and Integration.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “Shopee was born with the vision of making online shopping accessible, easy, and enjoyable. We built Shopee from the ground up, listening to people’s specific needs in each of our markets and turning our understanding into well-executed localized strategies that make Shopee what it is today. This year’s 12.12 Big Christmas Sale has added significance as we celebrate our fifth birthday and come together with our brand partners, sellers, and shoppers to support one another through a challenging year. As we look back on our journey, we are proud to have adapted quickly to serve the needs of our local communities.”

This 12.12, Shopee highlights three key trends that will continue to power the growth of e-commerce in 2021 and beyond.

    1. Social: Bringing the human touch to online shopping

Advancements in technology, coupled with changing shopper habits, have resulted in online shopping evolving from a transactional experience. Today’s users are more social than ever, and they demand a more engaging online shopping experience with rich and unique content. In 2016, Shopee was one of the first e-commerce platforms in the region to launch a live chat function, Shopee Live Chat, enabling direct conversations between buyers and sellers. Today, an average of 30 million messages are exchanged daily on Shopee Live Chat.

Through the years, Shopee has continuously improved on and introduced new in-app engagement features such as Shopee Games, Shopee Feed, and Shopee Live to make the online shopping experience more social. Shopee anticipates that this trend will stay, with e-commerce increasingly becoming a platform through which people can connect and enjoy shared experiences. Shopee will continue to drive this trend through unique initiatives like Shopee Mom’s Club, which provides like-minded consumers with one-stop exclusive access to baby product deals and parenting content. There’s also a Book Club for a new generation of digital readers in Vietnam and a “Pawrents” club to meet the growing online demand for pet products in Singapore.

    1. Personalization: Catering to the ‘Me’ economy[1]

Personalization is critical in e-commerce today. A highly personalized experience makes online shopping more efficient, enjoyable, and unique for consumers, while also helping brands and sellers drive traffic and growth. Shopee takes a hyper-localized approach by running seven different apps in each of its markets and localizing in-app features. Shopee also continually refines its recommendation engines to offer more customized and relevant shopping suggestions to fit consumers’ needs.

For brands and sellers, offering personalized recommendations to shoppers helps increase overall awareness and conversions. Businesses that use Shopee’s in-app advertisements generate 65% more sales activity than those that do not.[2] This is powered by Shopee’s own AI capabilities, which ensure that advertisements are delivered to the right users.

As the industry progresses further into the ‘me’ economy, businesses need to innovate in order to improve the online customer journey. In the coming year, Shopee also expects to see the rise of smart shoppers, a new demographic of young, tech-savvy individuals who expect a highly personalized online shopping experience.

    1. Integration: Creating a seamless customer journey

As retailers adapt to the new normal, they must deliver a seamless customer journey across all touchpoints. Shopee helps brands and sellers of all sizes by providing fundamental operational support through integrated payments and logistics, while creating innovative experiences that value-add to the overall customer journey.

    • Delivering an experiential home shopping experience with P&G: Together with P&G[3], Shopee introduced its first-ever experiential online Show Me My Home initiative, which allowed shoppers to discover and shop for P&G’s popular household items in a simulated household environment. This brought greater convenience for stay-at-home consumers, while mimicking the offline experience of walking in a store.

Yu closed, “2020 has been a transformative year. It has shown us the importance of technology and its ability to not only connect people and meet their basic needs, but also to entertain and engage. We are just at the beginning of our digital journey and looking ahead, we believe e-commerce will have an even more profound impact on businesses and consumers, creating new ways of living, working, and engaging. As we wrap up the year with the 12.12 Big Christmas Sale, let’s continue to look out for one another, uplift those in need, and welcome the new year on a high note.”

  • Build a Home Business with the right digital and e-commerce solutions

Build a Home Business with the right digital and e-commerce solutions

Achieve your entrepreneurial success with PLDT Home Biz program

Amid economic difficulties brought about by the pandemic-induced lockdowns, more Filipinos are now looking for ways to earn from home either through selling or re-selling anything from face masks to food packs and succulent plants or peddling their skills online such as graphic design or teaching a new language.

The key to making this new breed of homepreneurs successful is connecting them to digital platforms so that they can reach their target customers and provide safe ways to transact business online.

PLDT Home Biz, PLDT Home’s newest program for micro entrepreneurs operating at home, provides more than the fastest and reliable internet connection by equipping subscribers with the right partner e-commerce tools that are vital in the operating business in the new normal.

“We have packaged our PLDT Home Biz KaAsenso plans with partner e-commerce solutions that provide a complete digital ecosystem for our subscribers from creating your very own on-line store, accepting secure on-line payments, expanding your reach with high traffic marketplaces and lastly providing delivery in the comfort of your home,” said Patrick Tang, PLDT Vice President and Head of PLDT Home Biz.

    Total E-commerce Ecosystem

For a secure and hassle-free cashless payment system, PLDT Home Biz subscribers can accept digital payments through QR, bank transfer, and e-wallets, as well as credit and debit cards in partnership with digital financial services leader PayMaya, which is changing the game from high-risk cash-on-delivery to safer and more convenient contactless options for consumers.

“With many Filipino entrepreneurs launching their business from their homes and going online, PayMaya helps them get paid with a wide array of cashless payment options–whether it’s via e-Wallets or through credit/debit cards. We are there to take care of their payment needs so that they can focus on growing their business and running it smoothly and efficiently,” noted Raymund Villanueva, PayMaya Head of Business for QR Ecosystems.

PLDT Home Biz has also partnered with UnionBank GlobalLinker, allowing MSMEs to create their own online store-fronts for their business, and be connected to over 300,000 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) through GlobalLinker’s network.

“With our diverse network and leading edge platform, we’ll be able to connect our MSMEs with potential suppliers and customers, provide them opportunities to learn from other entrepreneurs through the various webinars, provide them with business solutions to help their businesses growth further, and more,” said Jaypee Soliman, UnionBank GlobalLinker Vice President for SME Segment.

PLDT Home Biz subscribers are also linked to the popular Sulit.ph online marketplace, enabling them to reach out to even more customers. “The community lockdowns have drastically changed the buying behavior of consumers. Everybody is now buying and selling online, from the tech-savvy millennials to elders who are using the internet for the first time,” Sulit.ph CEO Jay Adevoso pointed out.

“We also aim to enable safe and reliable on-demand delivery – and avoid physical meet-ups between sellers and their customers; through GrabExpress. PLDT Home Biz subscribers will also be part of the GrabExpress Madiskarteng Boss Club where they get exclusive Grab perks and discounts that they can use to grow their businesses online,” said Jacq Lim, Head of GrabExpress Philippines.

    Virtual trade expos and events

Through its partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), PLDT Home Biz KaAsenso subscribers can have access to the government agency’s virtual trade shows and caravans that can open up more opportunities and wider networks for aspiring MSMEs.

Some of the exciting expos that MSMEs should watch out for are the BUYanihan Resellers’ Expo 2020 Rise up and resell! Happening on December 5 to 7, 2020 from 10am onwards, the PLDT Smart Sustainability Fair that runs from November 23 to December 31, 2020, and the DTI Regional Operations Group and One Town, One OTOP Virtual Trade Expo Series of bazaars until 2021 powered by PLDT Home Biz. Joining these Virtual Trade Expos is FREE, MSMEs just need to register and log in to virtualtradeexpoph.com.

“We bring in these partnerships to give our micro entrepreneurs the best chance of success for their home business. We believe that our MSMEs are a powerful economic force in our country’s recovery from this crisis,” Tang said.

PLDT Home Biz KaAsenso plans start with the Asenso Plan 1888 with speeds of up to 20Mbps or the Asenso Plan 2199 with speeds of up to 40Mbps. All plans come with free installation and activation.

  • IT experts agree – Education, choice of tech are important in fight against cyber attacks

IT experts agree – Education, choice of tech are important in fight against cyber attacks

As more businesses embrace work from home setups and students are now into online classes, the threat of cyber attacks increases as well. Studies show that home networks and personal computers are roughly 3.5 times more likely to receive malware attacks compared to offices with enterprise-grade security.

With this, technology leaders HP and Intel held a panel discussion called “Cyber Lockdown” recently to tackle how we can protect our data and devices from cyber attacks amid the pandemic.

The panel featured IT experts HP Senior Security Advisor Junaid UR Rehman, Intel Asia Regional Account Manager Carrie Chow, ePLDT Chief Information Security Officer Angel Redoble, and Manila Bulletin Technology Editor Art Samaniego.

    Anti-virus no longer enough

On the topic of purchasing anti-virus software, all panelists agreed that while it was the best solution more than a decade ago, it’s simply inadequate today though still necessary. “The bad guys are continuously evolving,” said Samaniego, adding that 350,000 new malwares are created daily and cannot easily be detected.

According to the panel, anti-virus softwares mostly protect against already-existing and known threats. And while they are constantly updated to detect and combat new threats, updates usually take several weeks to reach consumers—by which time, new malware may have already infiltrated devices.

But that’s not to say users should not have it. According to HP’s Rehman, it’s an important first step in a multi-layered approach to achieve “cyber-resiliency”. “Start with the basics: install anti-malware and anti-virus software, then train and educate employees on cyber security,” he explained.

    Education key to cyber security

Asked if cybersecurity is important to the education sector especially now that most are learning from home, ePLDT’s Redoble gave a two-pronged answer. “Cybersecurity is important because with students, we have the potential to train and hone cybersecurity experts,” he said, noting that there is a lack of cyber security experts in the country.

He also emphasized the importance of cyber security in online class setups as malware could prevent teachers from facilitating classes and students from logging in to their online classes.

Hiring cyber security experts a must for businesses

This cyber security education isn’t limited to students, however. During the forum, the panel revealed that most businesses in the Philippines are currently very prone to cyber attacks and urged companies to emphasize usage policies and train and educate their employees on cyber security.

For PLDT, according to Redoble, phishing attacks are regularly stimulated internally. And it has been proven effective as more and more employees have been reporting possible threats before they even happen, as compared to the past when employees did not mind it as much.

Moreover, the panelists also emphasized the importance of investing in cyber security for businesses and hiring experts who can protect company assets.

“You need to have someone who can deal with this. For the longest time, businesses in the Philippines have been trying to do everything by themselves…and it has never been successful,” he said.

He also warned small companies that they are easy targets as compared to large corporations because hackers know they don’t invest in cyber security.

Less worry with HP and Intel’s innovative hardware security

But even with all the cyber threats, the information gap Filipinos need to fill in, not to mention the amount of money that businesses need to shell out, Intel Asia’s Chow and Rehman reminded consumers they need not worry too much because companies like HP and Intel have long-been collaborating to produce innovative security solutions pre-installed in their products.

“For HP, we have been working with partners like Intel to make hardware more intelligent. We are also building smart hardware and software to recover from attacks, which was previously unheard of,” said Rehman.

Moreover, modern HP PCs and laptops are equipped with “HP Security Solutions” like HP SureSense, which helps prevent never-before-seen infections before they even happen, and HP SureClick, which protects PCs and laptops from malware that lurks on malicious websites and hides in shared attachments and files.

With these latest security solutions from global technology leaders HP and Intel, Filipinos can rest a bit easier knowing that they have an Artificially Intelligent Security “assistant” protecting them as they go about their daily routines.

According to Christian Edmond Reyes, managing director of HP Enterprise, the rate of cyberattacks in the past two years is even bigger compared to the rate these past ten years. And this rate may further accelerate as many people work and study at home amid the pandemic. Thus, choosing the right PC for work-from-home or learn-from-home set-up becomes a security decision also.

  • PDRF gets latest technological support from SAP Customer Experience Solutions and SGV & Co. for COVID-19 Logistical Operations and Response

PDRF gets latest technological support from SAP Customer Experience Solutions and SGV & Co. for COVID-19 Logistical Operations and Response

The Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF), one of the country’s major private sector vehicles and coordinators for disaster response improvement, has received technological support on COVID-19 logistics and response. SGV & Co., the Philippine member firm of EY Global,  developed the specific application in collaboration with SAP, which was donated to PDRF as support.

The SAP Customer Experience solutions, which include SAP Sales & Service Cloud (aka C4C) aim to provide optimum logistical support and responses to organizations  assisting the PDRF in supplying personal protective equipment (PPE) and medicines to partner hospitals and other health-related organizations.

The application will also be instrumental in channelling donations from private institutions and individuals to continue providing these much-needed supplies to hospitals via an integrated platform.

PDRF Chief Resilience Officer Bill Luz expressed appreciation for the technological assistance given by SAP and SGV & Co. “Our COVID response has required us to send a wide of variety of items such as PPEs, ventilators, as well as providing meals to a large number of healthcare institutions all over the country. This technology enables us to manage our supply and deploy the resources in a timely manner to different organizations.”

Meanwhile, SGV & Co. Chairman and Managing Partner Wilson Tan asserts the firm’s commitment to the development and implementation of the much-needed application.

COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the Philippines which drive the continuing need for hospital supplies, medicine and PPE. Due to this, the PDRF continues to manage donations to address this need via its website.

SAP Philippines Managing Director, Edler Panlilio expressed the importance of technology’s role in assisting in the country’s COVID-19 relief efforts. “SAP Customer Experience solutions go beyond the back-end to support NGOs such as the PDRF with intelligent technologies that can drive efficiency in facilitating the donations and providing access to necessary supplies,” Panlilio said. “This is an example of how we remain true to our purpose of helping Filipino enterprises including NGOs to run better and, thus, improve the lives of Filipinos.”

To be recognized by not just one, but five space agencies is something has not yet been achieved by Filipinos, how much more of a multitude of countries and nations supporting the sustainable development goals of the United Nations?” He added that “The dengue epidemic and the COVID-19 is a real threat to the Philippine society right now, endangering health, well-being, livelihood, and most especially businesses and the national economy. If we could only learn how to give value to science, technology, mathematics, and engineering (STEM), the possibilities are endless. Our Filipino winners of Space Apps and GEO SDG Awards have taught us on how these space technologies greatly help in addressing epidemics and economic impact of COVID-19, its time to give them recognition and respect because they are Filipinos like us.” Winners shall be invited to visit NASA once travel is deemed safe, but unfortunately, travel, meals and incidental expenses, and accommodation expenses are not provided.
