IDTechEx Investigates Building the House of the Future

A floor that can feel when you fall, a warmth that wanders from room to room with you; could the house of the future take care of you?

From the Windows to the Walls

Smart homes have started with add-on appliances like Google home, smart fridges, or ring doorbells. These plug-in features are helpful to personalize a house to the needs of the inhabitants but can be clunky, with outlets used up and unsightly wiring across walls and floors. Coming next is built-in technology, ubiquitous throughout the building and, eventually, the neighborhood.

    If These Walls Could Talk

The built-in technologies can create a house that interacts and communicates with the inhabitants in a number of ways. The house could assist with care for the vulnerable; pressure sensors in the floor could analyze gait to tell if the inhabitants fall or seem to be limping and could alert family, friends, or support services.

In a lower-stakes adaptation, a table with built-in electronics could sense the temperature of the drink you place down on it and heat or cool just that portion of the surface to maintain the drink’s temperature.

New Technologies Bringing the House Down

There are many exciting companies in this area, which show where the concept is at right now. While these projected technologies are still at an add-on stage, these add-ons clearly show the way toward ubiquitous technology.

Laiier are focusing on leak sensing. Sensing leaks early would make a huge financial difference to the inhabitants’ lives. Laiier utilizes low-cost capacitive sensors based on carbon conductive. Capacitive sensors are especially sensitive to proximity to aqueous materials: this is why most smartphone screens cannot be used in the rain and why this technology is suited to a specialization in leak detection – though there are many other potential applications.

While this technology is not currently built into the property’s structure, the thin-film, large-area nature of the sensors enables them to be placed underneath appliances such as dishwashers, washing machines, and boilers. The sensors can also be produced in tape format, which enables them to be installed at a low cost without any specific expertise – another money-saver for inhabitants! For more information on this topic, please see IDTechEx’s report on the topic, “Printed and Flexible Sensors 2022-2032: Technologies, Players, Markets“.

    Author India Toomey

Similarly, Invisense produce a thin-film moisture sensor. It determines humidity using a printed antenna detected remotely by an RFID reader. The usual method for measuring is to remove tiles to see if water is leaking through them – this new method prevents such damage. The main application is thus placing the sensor behind waterproof building materials to check the efficacy of the waterproofing in showers.

Sensors such as these built into houses from the start could detect leaks before they become visible and, within a smart home, could even shut off water and call for a plumber. This would prevent large-scale damage and save money for the homeowner.

    Hothouse Inhabitants

With energy costs a hot topic right now, The Warming Surfaces Company has partnered with Portuguese high-pressure laminate company Soforma to develop prototypes of a film that, when integrated into laminate, can enable surfaces to provide heating. This can be used for underfloor heating, heated walls, and integrating into furniture. Furthermore, individual areas can be separately controlled to keep the kitchen cool during cooking while the lounge stays cozy.

    Clever Carpets

The social distancing requirements associated with the COVID-19 pandemic have motivated the development of smart floormats and carpets by InnovationLab.

Initially, this was a simple binary device that just detected whether pressure was being applied – the signal was then used to address a traffic light to let customers know whether it was safe to proceed to the counter. Recently, however, the system has been significantly upgraded. By training an artificial intelligence algorithm and placing the smart floormat by the store entrance, the system can now determine (and thus display) the number of customers in the store at any time on an anonymous basis. Furthermore, the system can discriminate between customers and trollies/carts to improve accuracy.

This technology could one day be used in applications such as care homes and assisted living to alert medical staff to the progress of patients and potential injuries and hazards.

    Bright Ideas

Fumbling for the light switch could become a thing of the past. Lighting is, of course, already built into most homes, but printed electronics offer visuals with a twist.

Tactotek outlined that as smart homes become increasingly established, product developers have to meet the challenge of how to fit more electronics into products without sacrificing beauty and style. Examples include incorporating electronic functionality below wooden veneers and within thin plastic layers. For more information on this topic, please see IDTechEx’s report on the topic, “In-Mold Electronics 2022-2032: Technology, Market Forecasts, Players“.

    The House of the Future

All of these growing technologies paint a picture of the house of the future. Pressure sensors interacting with heating, lighting, and moisture sensors could make the reality of a house with integrated lighting that could react to the time of day and turn itself off when a person leaves the room. Ultra-effective underfloor heating that could follow a person around a room and heated surfaces to keep food and drink hot and cold as needed. A house that senses leaks, falls, and hazards, catering to the inhabitant’s safety as much as comfort.

  • The Colorful Mark of a True Industry Leader

The Colorful Mark of a True Industry Leader

Filipinos remember Sinclair for its infamous advertisement in the 80s and 90s that inspired more people to make home improvements by themselves. The term do-it-yourself or DIY became synonymous with the brand’s catchphrase “Sinclair it!” that established the brand as a household name over the past decades.

Over the past years, Sinclair remains true to its vision of providing premium quality paint products for millions of families and establishments around the world. With the rise of technological advancements and as the market for construction development remains competitive, Sinclair is marking its return to the local market with a broader and more advanced selection of products that provide beauty, durability, affordability, and eco-friendly solution suit for every Pinoy home.

    The New Generation of Sinclair

With the reopening of the local market, Sinclair’s timely return will fire up the local competition with its latest premium products that continue the legacy that it started.

Aside from its Traditional or Classic Paint selection that made Sinclair one of the world’s pioneer and trusted brands, Sinclair highlights its innovation with its modern technology paint system, from oil-based to water-based paint and universal colorants.

“We’re delighted to bring back the brand that provided beauty, protection, and comfort to many Filipinos over the past years. With Sinclair’s new line of products – from oil-based to water-based – customers can assure continued premium quality products that will last for a long time while keeping the environment safe and sound,” Mr. Derick Tan, Founder, and CEO of Magna Prime Chemical Technologies, Inc., the company that manufactures Sinclair in the Philippines.

Sinclair’s new generation of paint products highlights its waterproofing innovation that made the paint system more economical, easier to apply, and durable. Inspired by the beauty and long-lasting capability of nature, these new generation paints are made suitable for the tropical weather system in the Philippines on top of the climate change we’re experiencing:

Natica Waterproofing Paint – Inspired by the abundant marine shells in the Philippines, this waterproofing paint possesses marine shells’ thick and smooth features that represent durability and protection. Made of modified pure acrylic paint, this latest innovation of Sinclair is used as a water-proofer, primer, sealer, and top coat making it more cost-efficient than the traditional method of waterproofing and painting exterior walls.

Armadillo Polyurethane Paint – inspired by the New World placental mammal, this Armadillo Polyurethane Paint is the first water-based PU Paint in the Philippines takes pride in being a tough and flexible paint just like an armadillo skin. Recommended to use for high-rise buildings to avoid frequent repainting or costly paint over because of its durability.

Tamago Cleanable Interior Paint – Sinclair’s take on the sheen of an egg – or Tamago (卵/玉子) in the Japanese language – is made to provide a sleeker yet manageable look for home and establishment’s interiors. Made to provide a clean and cleanable look, its simple yet calming effect is achieved with its balance of flat and glossy while protecting your walls or hiding wall imperfections.

Taro Silicone Paint – Is the first silicone paint in the country. With the wet season taking over almost half of the year in the Philippines, rainwater has become one of the main reasons why paint fails to protect many homes and establishments. With Sinclair’s Taro Silicone Paint, families and establishments can have peace of mind any season due to its impregnating capabilities. Impregnation happens when the paint penetrates through the pores of the substrate thus enhancing its adhesion. It also has high-performance formula creating high-vapor permeability that allows water vapor to escape from the surface, avoiding the build-up of algae and fungus that cause paint to peel off. This paint is suitable for structures located in highlands, beside seashores, and areas where wall moisture is present.

    More Options to Choose From

Aside from the New Generation paints, Sinclair also levels up its Classic Paint selection which ranges from oil-based to water-based paints that provide equal beauty and protection to various surfaces.

Ligno – this waster-based wood primer is ideal for priming, sealing, and filling wooden substrates that help prevent tannins and stains. An eco-friendly product, this paint has low odor, low volatile organic compounds, and is non-toxic.

Rhino – for those metal surfaces, this Sinclair water-based metal primer and top coat provide a two-in-one purpose that saves time and money. This paint has excellent corrosion resistance for indoor and outdoor applications, ideal for new or weathered galvanized metal, steel, and aluminum roofing surfaces, properly prepared or treated ferrous metal, garages and fences, machines and industrial equipment, pipelines, and tanks.

Cascara – for multi-surface paint, the Sinclair Cascara is an eco-friendly, high-gloss, low-odor, water-based paint ideal as a topcoat for wood, metal, and concrete on interior and exterior areas.

Sinclair is also sparking more colors to its Filipino customer through its colorants products that are made to provide good color retention without losing the glossiness of the base paint. Along with its New Generation paints, Sinclair is also launching Chameleon Colorant, which is dubbed as the universal colorant that gives accurate blend and color preference. Chameleon Colorants are specially formulated using special types of chemicals and pigments to ensure that they can blend homogenously either with water-based, solvent-based or epoxy-based type of paints.

“With more Filipinos enjoying DIY home projects, Sinclair paint products that are highly recommended by professionals are made to spark creativity and freedom, while providing protection, peace of mind, and value to Pinoy’s hard work and money,” Mr. Tan concluded.

  • Loving Your Homeland and Drive Better Recovery

Loving Your Homeland and Drive Better Recovery

The COVID-19 pandemic plunged the Philippine economy into a recession. However, after months of quarantine, the country started to slowly reopen, thereby driving economic recovery through various means, particularly tourism.

Understandably, tourism was one of the country’s hardest-hit industries as its revenue dropped by 72 percent[1] in the first seven months of the year. Despite this reality, the Department of Tourism believes its recovery can also help the economy regain its losses since it contributed 12.7 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 5.71 million to employment in 2019, according to a Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA) report[2]

As major tourism destinations like Tagaytay, Boracay, Baguio, and Bataan has announced that they are now opening their borders to local tourists while following health protocols, local tourism can potentially help the economy get back on track, says CitiGlobal Realty and Development Inc., a top real estate developer that offers affordable and income-generating properties in the country.

“The pandemic may have given the tourism sector some setbacks like other industries, but still its contributions to local economies and people are immeasurable,” said Gary To, Managing Director of CitiGlobal. “Tourism allows entrepreneurs to gain more opportunities and develop products. Some businesses won’t usually succeed with local communities alone, but exposure to diverse audiences will allow it to grow faster.”

While the country does not need to reopen its borders to foreign tourists immediately, since the pandemic will not likely end soon, slowly opening local tourism opportunities can make an immediate impact. Local tourism alone can help generate revenues for provincial towns, increase local employment, spur demand for local products, and increase local hotels’ occupancy. Indeed, a renewed tourism will impact many industries —CitiGlobal shares just a few of these industries that will rebound from local tourism.

Restaurants and Other Food Services. Some people say you can get to know a person more based on the food they eat, but in this case, you can learn more about a country’s culture and history. Restaurants specializing in local cuisine will have major success with tourism since it can expect more customers who are adventurous and curious about the local cooking.

Historical Locations. Besides nature and tropical islands, historical locations are also attractions for tourists, especially knowledge seekers who want to learn more about history and culture. Since it is an attraction, it can be given more attention and care since this is one of the drivers for tourism.

Souvenir Stores. Every location has its own culture, where even the smallest items can hold a significant meaning to its people, and tourists will most likely want to bring home a remembrance of it with them. These mementos can become other means of income for locals, as well.

Hotels and Other Lodgings. The hospitality industry greatly benefits from tourism since most of its customers would be tourists looking to stay while traveling. Basically, the more tourists there are in the location is equals to more business for the hospitality industry.

The money that tourists bring in allows businesses to grow quickly, especially if they offer a unique service or product that fulfills a tourist’s needs. Opportunities to start a business at locations where tourism booms are the best prospects investors can make to generate more income.

One easy investment people can make to gather more income is to invest in real estate properties in known and potential tourism spots. One investment that investors, even beginners, can make, is investing in Condotels like properties from CitiGlobal. It allows you to passive income, have your own accommodations, and do not have to be hands-on to manage it for customers.

CitiGlobal envisions becoming a top real estate developer in the country, effortlessly putting the country’s best tourism locations on the map through their real estate properties. The company also aims to provide investment opportunities for OFWs to have back in the country and be with their families.

As a flourishing real estate development company in the country, CitiGlobal started as a marketing, landholding, and leasing company back in 2003. But after seeing how responsive and competitive the economy is, it accepted the challenge to become an efficient and lifestyle developer in 2011.

CitiGlobal aims to deliver quality real estate projects that will revolutionize the Filipino mindset on leisure properties. Among their currently open real estate projects are Tagaytay Fontaine Villas, Tagaytay Clifton Resort Suites in Tagaytay, and Diamond Beach Resorts in Palawan. They also have future projects in line in Quezon City, Cubao, Bataan, Tagaytay, Palawan, Panglao, and Davao.

  • Holcim products listed on procurement website for green builders

Holcim products listed on procurement website for green builders

As the global leader in building solutions LafargeHolcim Group recently unveiled bold plans to further improve environmental performance, local unit Holcim Philippines, Inc.’s cement offerings were listed on an online platform that guides contractors looking for materials and services for green building projects.

Holcim Solido, Holcim Excel, and Holcim Wallright, which are designed for infrastructure, general purpose and masonry, are now listed on the Green Building Procurement Hub (Green Building/PH), a website that identifies products, services, and building spaces with green credentials. Green Building/PH is a service provided for the members of the Philippine Green Building Council (PHILGBC), an organization that accredits buildings for following or exceeding environmental standards.

The company explains on Green Building/PH that Holcim Solido, Holcim Excel and Holcim Wallright are environment friendly because these are produced with lower greenhouse gas emissions and overall carbon footprint compared with Ordinary Portland Cement.

The company added that the products use mineral additives that reduce their content of clinker, the carbon-intensive component of cement and produced with low carbon-alternative fuels. The company is also working to have its range of dry mix mortar products listed on Green Building/PH.

Holcim Philippines President and CEO John Stull: “This is part of our commitment to contribute to sustainable development in the country by supplying products that have lower environmental footprint while meeting the performance requirements of builders. As construction activity in the country continues, our partners can count on us to provide them with building solutions that are respectful of nature and ensure quality structures.”

This development comes as the LafargeHolcim Group unveiled during the New York Climate Conference on Sept. 21, 2020 new commitments to accelerate the 20% reduction in carbon intensity of cement production by 2030 to contribute to the global effort of holding temperature changes to 1.5 degrees Celsius. To achieve this, LafargeHolcim will increase low-carbon and carbon neutral offerings, use more recycled materials as alternative fuels and raw materials among others.

LafargeHolcim CEO Jan Jenisch: “I believe in building a world that works for people and the planet. That’s why we are reinventing how the world builds today to make it greener with low-carbon and circular solutions. I am very excited to be working with Science Based Targets Initiative, taking a rigorous science-based approach to shape our net zero roadmap and accelerating our efforts to substantially lower our CO2 footprint. I will not stop pushing the boundaries to lead the way in green construction.”

Holcim Philippines is committed to reduce its net carbon emissions per ton of cementitious material in line with the LafargeHolcim Group’s targets to reduce its carbon footprint. Holcim Philippines has been making progress in this goal by producing more blended cements, increasing usage of alternative fuels and continuing improvement of operations for more efficient energy use.

Holcim Philippines actively supports the reduction of carbon emissions of the cement industry as committed through its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) to the Philippine government, a signatory of the Paris Agreement. The NDC includes mitigation options for the Philippine cement industry such as transition to low-carbon products.

  • Holcim eyes roll out of one-day road repair concrete in Davao, Baguio

Holcim eyes roll out of one-day road repair concrete in Davao, Baguio

Holcim Philippines will roll out its SFCrete road repair solution outside Metro Manila to help partners lessen disruption from rehabilitation of busy urban thoroughfares.

Leading cement manufacturer Holcim Philippines, Inc. is planning to make available its one-day concrete SuperFast(SF) Crete outside the National Capita Region to support contractors looking to participate in government road repair projects in other urban areas and help lessen disruption to commuters .

The company recently held a webinar to promote SFCrete among road contractors in Metro Manila, who expressed strong interest in using the building solution in their projects. The company also plans to offer SFCrete to contractor partners in Davao and Baguio, who are interested in lessening closure time of thoroughfares due to repairs. Holcim further strengthens protections against Covid-19 ahead of ECQ lift

Cement manufacturer Holcim Philippines, Inc. continues to improve health and safety controls against Covid-19 at its sites to protect the well-being of people, partners, and the community as the company prepares to resume operations following the government’s easing of enhanced community quarantines.

The company closed sites and facilities in Luzon in compliance with the national government directive of an enhanced community quarantine on 16 March 2020. The company also shut down its plant in Davao City following a similar action by the local government on 2 April 2020.

Holcim Philippines President and CEO John Stull expressed confidence that the company’s strong health and safety culture and well-thought-out plans enable it to protect people from Covid-19 when operations resume. Initiatives will draw from best practices across the LafargeHolcim Group and focus on social distancing, personal hygiene and health checks.

“In Lugait, Misamis Oriental our plant continues to run without any Covid-related incident further proving that our strength in Health and Safety enables us to properly manage these risks. Lugait also provides a model on how we can protect the well-being of people when we restart operations of our other sites,” Stull added.

The company’s skeleton teams in all its sites have installed markers to guide people in staying two meters apart as prescribed for social distancing and built hand washing stations. Holcim Philippines also continues to share information to employees and partners on Covid-19 to help them be more aware and mindful on protecting themselves against the disease.

The company has installed additional hand washing stations in all its sites to further strengthen protections of workers against Covid-19.

Stull said the company welcomes the government’s measured efforts to ensure business activities can resume safely. He added that Holcim Philippines will continue to strictly adhere to the guidance of health authorities on this matter and be ready to share such best practices to partners, industry groups, and government agencies to help in the safe resumption of building activity in the country.

Holcim has also shifted its corporate citizenship budget to provide medical supplies to hospitals treating coronavirus patients and food and hygiene products to communities hosting its facilities in La Union, Bulacan, Manila, Batangas, Iloilo, Misamis Oriental and Davao City. Approximately 1,500 families and government front line workers have benefited from the first batch of relief operations completed as of April 14.
