  • Five Home Fire Safety Tips to Protect Your Family

Five Home Fire Safety Tips to Protect Your Family

This Fire Prevention Month, learn how to prepare your family and keep them safe to avoid disaster from striking

Did you know that an average of 42 fire incidents occurs in the Philippines daily? This amounts to around ₱4.65 billion worth of damage every year. According to the Bureau of Fire Protection, the top causes of fire outbreaks in the Philippines are faulty electrical connections, lighted cigarette butts, and open flames.

Since most of us are staying home with our families during this time, it’s our responsibility to ensure that our haven and sanctuary remains free from such health hazards. This Fire Prevention Month, educate yourself and your family on fire safety measures. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Here are five fire prevention measures you need to take:

    Install smoke alarms

First things first: install a smoke alarm. These alarms can detect fire way before your nose can smell smoke. Early detection can save your house—and your loved ones’ lives.

Install smoke alarms on every floor, including inside bedrooms and living areas. Mount each unit on the ceiling or high up on walls. Don’t forget to test these out every month and change the batteries every year. You don’t want them to fail you when a fire actually breaks out. After ten years of use, replace each unit.

    Try: X-SENSE Smoke Alarm, ₱1,500

Get fire extinguishers or blankets ready

Did you know that using water to extinguish fires isn’t fool-proof? Since oil and water don’t mix, using the latter to extinguish grease fires can actually cause it to spread. Additionally, water conducts electricity and you can get electrocuted if you try to douse an electrical fire.

Instead, invest in a fire extinguisher or fire blanket. Confused about which one to use? Smother smaller fires in the kitchen with a fire blanket. They’re less messy and won’t damage food items in your kitchen. For bigger, harder-to-reach fires, use a fire extinguisher. Make sure they’re available on each floor. Place them near the kitchen, garage, and any other exit routes.

    Try: Daytech Fire Blanket, ₱489

    Avoid open flames

Does your weekend pamper routine feature scented candles? Place your candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface, preferably at a distance from your bed, curtains, and other flammable items. To avoid flare-ups, light them far away from aircon vents or electric fans.

You might feel relaxed and ready for bed with soothing scents, but never doze off and leave your candles unattended. Consider switching to battery-operated candles if you have kids and pets who might accidentally knock them over.

Try: At Home LED Candle, ₱230

Keep all appliances in working order

If you’ve been squeezing the last ounce of life out of your old appliances, it’s time to put them to rest. You’re not saving money by continuing to use rickety appliances until they give out. The faulty machinery and frayed cables pose a fire hazard. A fire outbreak will end up being more expensive than a new appliance.

Most home fires start in the kitchen, so keep cooking appliances, in particular, functioning properly. For malfunctioning appliances, don’t attempt to use and call in a repairman as soon as possible. Replace if needed.

    Try: Haier Cooking Range, ₱15,799

    Create a fire escape plan

In the same way you practice fire drills at school or at the office, your family should craft its own home fire escape plan as well.

Establish primary and alternative escape routes from the house and pick at least two meeting spots in case family members get separated from each other. Teach everyone the Stop, Drop, and Roll method in the event that their clothes catch fire. Lastly, buy an emergency medical kit you can easily grab on your way out of the house.

    Try: Mediplast Emergency Kit, ₱465

Keep yourself and your loved ones safe from harm with these doable tips. Taking such exhaustive measures might feel excessive, but as with everything else, prevention is better than cure. For emergencies, call the National Emergency Hotline at 911, or the Philippine Red Cross at 143.

  • Have “Knots and Knots of Fun” with your kids with these activities

Have “Knots and Knots of Fun” with your kids with these activities

Staying indoors for too long can make your kids feel bored. Instead of letting them spend their days glued to their smartphones or tablets, try these activities that you can actually do with them. Now, you’re not only adding excitement to their moments at home, you also get to bond and have fun together.

Check out these four fun and exciting at-home activities your kids will love doing with you:

    Indoor scavenger hunt

Hide different items around the house and have your little ones search for them. To make this more interesting, make the clues specific to your family – information only you and your family would know like items or places linked to their favorites or special memories.

If you see your kids having fun with this game, make it a weekly habit. You can even assign a host among your family members every week so even the kids get the feel of hiding something. If they’re too young, you or an older sibling can pair up with them.

    Your own dance party

Exercising is always advised, especially now that we’re all cooped up indoors. Make it a lot more fun by dancing the night (or day) away with the whole family. Allow different family members to suggest different songs of their preference so everyone gets their share of leading the dance.

Just let loose, laugh, and break a sweat together.

    Karaoke time

Karaoke is a very Filipino family activity. You can take it up a notch by turning it into a full-on singing competition. Pick a theme every week: can be based on the singer, the genre of the song, or even the current occasion (like Christmas songs for the Holidays, love songs for Valentine’s Day, etc.), and have family members perform based on the theme. Make it extra glamorous by wearing costumes that align with the performance.

You can include exciting prizes like unlimited Cheesy Knots snacks, no chores for three days, or more TV time.

    Do Knot forget the snacks

To make each activity even more fun, have some snacks! And since we’re talking about bringing joy into your little ones’ days, you can’t go wrong with Cheesy Knots. It’s a yummy pretzel snack, with milky cheese flavored coating.

Make sure to stock up your pantry with Cheesy Knots, so everyone can munch on them while having the best time together as a family. Have “Knots and Knots of fun” bonding with your family as you enjoy this new delicious treat.

If you’re looking for more exciting activities to try out with your family, check the Club Knots Facebook page. It’s filled with creative activity videos you and your kids can do together.

  • Genuine HP Inks help users avoid health, financial and environmental hazards

Genuine HP Inks help users avoid health, financial and environmental hazards

As any responsible car owner would know, putting the wrong type of fuel in your car’s tank will cause irreparable damage to the engine. The same can be said by using imitation or fake inks which is why HP has advocated the use of only original inks in its printers, not just for quality printing and to prolong the life of the printer, but also to protect against possible health risks and further harming the environment.

Besides being a major cause of printer malfunction, not too many people realize that using counterfeit inks can also be detrimental to one’s health. In fact, the risks involved in using these fake products are actually quite long and concerning. Here’s a brief summary of these risks for the information of the public.

First and possibly known by most, is the fact that non-genuine inks may indeed be a cheaper alternative but in the long run, will actually cost the user more, as the damage it will cause the printer will be quite significant. Toner leaks and clogging the printer heads are a common occurrence when using fake inks. A technical study done by Market Strategies International reveals that out of the 71,231 printers that are normally serviced in the course of a year, 28% are actually caused by the use of non-original inks. Non-genuine inks are manufactured using inferior materials which normally cracks and leaks, thus causing permanent damage to the printer’s internal hardware.

Besides this, the use of non-original inks also voids the warranty of the printer. It would be such a waste to spend on a good HP printer but then scrimp on using original inks. Using imitation inks forfeits the chances of getting quality technical support which cover printer warranties. Users, more often than not, pay much higher fees to have their printers repaired, when it breaks down.

Another risk of using counterfeit inks is its poor quality print outs. HP printers are designed to work with specific color configurations and using non-genuine inks greatly affects its print quality.

The next risk, which is probably the most important, is the fact that fake inks are known to use Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) with high levels of styrene, both of which are known carcinogens. It would be difficult to determine just how much TVOC and Styrene these imitation products contain as they are manufactured without any quality control measures and are largely unregulated.

And finally,  counterfeit ink cartridges are not properly disposed, thus adding even more e-waste in landfills.

Still interested in using fake ink cartridges? Hopefully not, as the risks of using such far outweigh its perceived advantages (if there is even any).

  • P&G and Shopee Collaborate to Encourage Fair Division of Household Chores in Latest #ChallengeTheChores Campaign

P&G and Shopee Collaborate to Encourage Fair Division of Household Chores in Latest #ChallengeTheChores Campaign

Procter & Gamble partnered with the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia Shopee, to launch its latest campaign as part of this year’s International Women’s Day. Titled #ChallengeTheChores, this campaign responds to the global call for us to challenge gender stereotypes by fostering a sense of joint responsibility within the household and encouraging family members to team up and tackle household chores together.

The campaign will be progressively launched across five Southeast Asian markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam, featuring a series of challenges that aim to inspire families to take on household chores together, such as doing the laundry and attending to a child’s needs.

Since Covid-19, 75% of caregiving chores have fallen on women, with several extra responsibilities and commitments added to their already busy lives. To further illustrate the importance of addressing this need for shared responsibility, the campaign will feature a video of how household chores can be equally divided and tackled together.

Alexandra Vogler, P&G e-commerce Senior Director, Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa, said, “P&G is deeply committed to equality and inclusion. Through this campaign, we want to raise awareness of the imbalanced distribution of chores. Through an entertaining short film and an interactive, gamified experience, we hope to inspire people to #ChallengeTheChores and drive greater equality within households.”

Shopee also found that women are the most active shoppers on the platform in product categories such as household and other fast-moving consumer goods. As e-commerce becomes more prevalent, Shopee looks to leverage its platform to encourage meaningful conversations through a fun, personalized, and interactive experience for customers.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “We are proud to partner with P&G, a world-leading FMCG brand, on this meaningful initiative. Besides encouraging families to take on equal responsibilities of household chores, we also seek to provide our users with a wide assortment of products to make everyday household chores convenient and  manageable. We look forward to launching more of such engaging campaigns with P&G that would enrich the shopping experience for our users.”

During the campaign period, shoppers in each market can look forward to various activities and exclusive content that will inspire the whole family and help them rediscover the fun of tackling household chores together. These include live streams featuring Key Opinion Leaders on their challenges when tackling household chores and how they teamed up with their partners to overcome those challenges. It also includes exclusive in-app activities to snatch up special deals and win prizes and the classic Shopee Catch game to collect as many P&G products giveaway or vouchers as possible.

The #ChallengeTheChores Campaign will run from March 17 to March 19. For more information about the campaign and the best deals and promos, visit https://shopee.ph/m/pg-super-brand-day

  • Shopee Supports Local: Sellers Share their #TatakPinoy Success Stories

Shopee Supports Local: Sellers Share their #TatakPinoy Success Stories

Local MSMEs shared why aspiring Filipino entrepreneurs should venture into e-commerce.

Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, recently launched the #TatakPinoy initiative in February to help local sellers amidst the pandemic. Through this initiative, Shopee provided local sellers with enhanced visibility on the platform to promote locally-made products.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “The Philippines is considered as one of the fastest-growing e-commerce markets in the region, and we’ve observed that more Filipinos are shifting to online platforms to address their needs. To help local sellers better reach these consumers, Shopee wants to ensure that local sellers are well-equipped with the tools and knowledge to make it in the industry. With the launch of #TatakPinoy, it was our goal to boost the local economy and to promote the quality products made by fellow Filipinos. We take pride in these sellers’ craftsmanship and we invite other aspiring Filipino entrepreneurs to try it out as well.”

As the #TatakPinoy initiative allowed local entrepreneurs to broaden their reach and grow their brands’ presence online, Shopee featured two local sellers, Bengie Antido and Dante Sargento, who shared how they built and gained more recognition for their online businesses:

Bengie Antido of Kayamanan ni Juan Trading

Bengie Antido’s shop, Kayamanan ni Juan, is a social enterprise offering a wide variety of high-quality bags, t’nalak wallets, and wooden bracelets, with 90% of the products crafted by tribespeople in General Santos City. Besides being a key source of income for him and his local community, it also served as an avenue for Bengie to share the culture and local traditions with people across the world. However, after the lockdown, Bengie found it harder to market the items due to the lack of tourist footfall in the city.

As a result, Bengie decided to transition into an online business on Shopee to reach a wider audience. Going digital was complicated at first, but with the support and guidance from the Shopee Seller Marketing Center, Bengie learned how to utilize vouchers and promotions to give his buyers a more rewarding online shopping experience. He also takes time to answer all inquiries from prospective customers via the chat function on the platform.

This decision helped his business stay afloat amid the ongoing pandemic and led to more inquiries from customers as well as a 60% increase in his overall sales. With #TatakPinoy, Kayamanan ni Juan gained a bigger following. “Because of #TatakPinoy, we received a 20% increase in orders. The virtual trade fair helped our business gain more visibility and also secured the livelihoods of so many people,” Bengie said.

Dante Sargento of MO’s Food Products

Dante Sargento of MO’s Food Products sells products like bagoong, sinamak (spiced vinegar), and ginisang alamang (shrimp paste). To him, these items are not just condiments — they are part of the local culture and tradition.

To preserve this heritage, Dante chose to sell these products online to reach more Filipino consumers. He found that it was more convenient and less expensive to sell on Shopee and the online platform allowed him to reach a broader and more diverse consumer base, without having to go out.

Dante shared that Shopee’s tools like the secure in-app chat feature and learning programs, such as the Seller Masterclasses, were a big help in his overall experience as a seller on Shopee. With the help of Shopee’s robust ecosystem, he was able to build his online presence and actively engage with his customers through the chat feature, which helped to increase his sales up to 20%.

During the #TatakPinoy campaign, Dante received more orders than usual. “I was surprised that within the three days of participating in the campaign, I got the same amount of orders that I was usually getting in a week. I am thankful that Shopee gave my business more visibility and opportunities to grow.”

As consumers continue to rely on online platforms to satisfy their needs, both local sellers encouraged other entrepreneurs to explore the growing opportunities in e-commerce and shared some words of advice.

“Always ensure that you are selling good quality products to build your credibility and reputation. Build good relationships with the buyers so you’ll get better ratings that will translate to better sales. It’s also vital to do your research on the industry and the platform so you can be familiar with its helpful features,” Bengie said.

“Selling online can be overwhelming at first, but sellers can and need to learn to adapt, especially in the new normal. Use this chance to overcome your fears and discover new opportunities through innovation,” Dante added.
