  • New York-filmed Jollibee video offers a perspective of hope and gratitude in this challenging time

New York-filmed Jollibee video offers a perspective of hope and gratitude in this challenging time

In the future when we look back on today, how would we describe the pandemic? What version of history would we tell?

This is the theme of Jollibee’s first internationally produced film developed by BBH Singapore, which reinterprets the brand’s tagline of “Joy of Family” in the context of the current pandemic.

When the pandemic broke out, everyone was unprepared and had to face an uncomfortable reality – that life as we knew it changed overnight. It was painful, scary and upended lives around the world. Yet it is in our darkest hours when we see what’s most dear to us – our families. From physically spending every waking hour together in lockdown to long video calls across continents, our family was what got us through. This was the year of the pandemic, but it was also the year of the family.

The 3-minute-long campaign film titled “A Message from the Future”, shot in New York and directed by award-winning director Law Chen, tells a perspective-changing story about the times we are currently living in, which will leave you feeling grateful for the time you have with your family, and how through it all it is the Joy of family that gets us through all the hardships.

In a departure from the brand’s usual campaigns, the current film adopts a sombre and realistic tone as it goes in the future to record a nostalgic and emotional story of a migrant Filipino family based in the US. Set in 2060, the film shows a grandfather recounting his memory of the pandemic to his grandchildren. The story starts off on a bleak note but gives way to hope and joyful family moments that could have only happened because the family spent more time together, a transition highlighted through the film’s progression from black & white shots to coloured ones.

Francis Flores, JFC’s Philippines Country Marketing head and Jollibee PH Marketing head, said: “Jollibee as a brand has been all about the joy of family, and while in our current times it may be difficult to focus solely on that aspect, we realize just the same that there’s a silver lining in all this.  Coming from a powerful truth that we are spending time with our families more than ever, it has never happened before and may never happen again – we wanted this campaign to acknowledge the grim reality of the current pandemic but still give a positive message of hope. It’s all about appreciating these moments with them and finding the ultimate Joy with family. Our families have been a comforting factor for most of us in these tough times and we wanted everyone to be grateful for that.”

Jollibee is releasing this heart-warming digital short film as the grand culmination of the brand’s new Family Thanksgiving Month initiative. “The Family Thanksgiving Month is not just a celebration here at home. We’re hoping that all families, whether Filipinos living abroad or other nationalities, will be inspired to start a tradition of expressing their appreciation for their loved ones,” Flores added.

You can watch the video on Jollibee’s official Facebook page and Jollibee Studios’ YouTube channel.

  • Looking to renovate your home this year? Here’s how you can start

Looking to renovate your home this year? Here’s how you can start

Home improvement projects picked up in 2020, and this trend is showing no signs of slowing down. While cooped up at home, you could try jumping on this bandwagon and give your home a brand-new look. Not sure where to start? Here are a few tips to guide you in transforming your home into the cozy sanctuary you’ve been imagining.

Start with one room in mind

Pick a room to jumpstart your home renovation journey. Entertainment and recreational rooms have been prioritized for home makeovers since last year, so that would be a good room to start with.

Then, ask the following questions: (1) Does the area serve its purpose of fulfilling the family’s entertainment needs? (2) Is the area comfortable enough for me to binge-watch my favorite K-drama?

After answering these questions, come up with a check-list of what needs to be moved, tweaked, replaced, or retained in that area. Some mainstays in the room are normally the sofa, your favorite lounge seat, and of course, the TV. Complete the home entertainment system and take it up a notch with the Samsung Soundbar’s unmatched audio quality.

    Create a work-from-home-friendly space

Choose a dedicated corner in your home specifically for work that will help you become motivated and productive. A place beside a window would be a good choice.  Make sure the nook will provide a calm yet conducive environment for you.

Once you’ve chosen that perfect nook, get the essentials ready: a standing desk, an ergonomic chair, and a Smart device to boost your productivity. Consider the Samsung Crystal UHD TV with its Tap View feature that lets you tweak presentations and view tasks on a bigger screen by simply tapping your Samsung smartphone on the TV. A bonus feature: The TV can act as a virtual background for your online meetings with the Ambient Mode that enables it to blend in with the home interior or display any photo you like.

Watch out for exclusive summer blockbuster deals

You don’t need to break the bank to transform your home — take advantage of Samsung’s Summer’s on Us sale for your home entertainment upgrade needs. Take home a Crystal UHD TV and Soundbar bundle for the ultimate home theater experience and save up to Php 17,499! Promo runs until June 30, 2021.

Visit a Samsung authorized dealer today for more exciting deals and discounts. For more information, go to www.samsung.com/ph.

  • Shopee and Unilever Say Yes to Equal Opportunities and Continue its Support for Local Sellers through its Positive Beauty Campaign

Shopee and Unilever Say Yes to Equal Opportunities and Continue its Support for Local Sellers through its Positive Beauty Campaign

Mano Amiga sellers share how Shopee and Unilever helped them grow their businesses.

As more Filipinos shift to online shopping for their daily necessities, many businesses are also turning to digital platforms to widen their reach and establish a strong online presence – especially the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). To cater to the growing number of online sellers, Shopee, the leading e-commerce platform in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, continues to partner with organizations to support MSMEs who are looking for better opportunities in e-commerce.

In 2020 Unilever and Mano Amiga, a non-governmental organization that advocates for community transformation and inclusive growth through education, first partnered with Shopee for their Beauty That Cares Campaign, to offer assistance to 25 micro-entrepreneurs. Through this partnership, Mano Amiga sellers gained a strong understanding of e-commerce and learned how to maximize the digital space’s full potential. Sellers had access to monetary funding, entrepreneurship training programs, and Shopee’s e-commerce tools to help them expand their reach. Two Mano Amiga sellers share how Unilever and Shopee supported their business growth:

Janette Lagundi of JTL Trading (https://shopee.ph/alexandermoses_0503

For Janette Lagundi, a mother of two, it was tough when she first started her online business. Despite having no prior entrepreneurship experience, she decided to start selling cleaning products and home decor items such as Himalayan salt lamps, to get her family through the pandemic. She admitted that it was difficult for her to adjust to selling on e-commerce platforms as she was not very tech-savvy.

Through learning the ropes at Shopee, Janette saw her business thrived. “Because of Shopee, not only are my sales increasing, my store is also gaining better recognition through plenty of promotions. I learned a lot about selling online through the training programs and masterclasses. I am determined to explore more opportunities on e-commerce, and I’m glad that Shopee and Unilever helped me adjust and adapt amid the pandemic,” she said.

She added that the support from Shopee and Unilever helped her family immensely. “This business is my bread and butter and I feel more confident in growing my business because I am more competent now. Because of this opportunity, I can provide for my children.”

Cecilia Comia of C plus D Design (https://shopee.ph/designbycplusd

Cecilia Comia used to run a food business and even designed her own food stalls, but due to the pandemic, she had to shut down her food business and focus on selling decal stickers and labels instead. “We started our business in 2018 with a passion for good design and we wanted people to appreciate and see how small design details can change an entire product or experience,” she said. The strategy shift, although promising, posed some obstacles. “The competition is tough online. Reaching a wider audience and achieving effective customer engagement are both constant challenges. We are still struggling when it comes to establishing our business. The prices of our competitors are tough to match,” she added.

Shopee and Unilever provided her with the much-needed support. “Unilever’s program connected us with Shopee. It gave us an edge in terms of knowledge in selling online. Unilever’s financial assistance also helped us with our cash flow and allowed us to increase our stocks and improve our equipment.”

To support the transition and growth of MSMEs in the digital landscape, Shopee partners with Unilever once again to give MSMEs a spotlight at their Yes to Positive Beauty Sale this May 17 to 19, 2021. The campaign is part of Unilever’s renewed purpose and commitment to bring about positive change through real actions – to do more good, not just less harm, for people and the planet.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “We are proud to partner with Unilever to support a cause that aims to uplift the lives of local sellers and their loved ones. Shopee believes that every Filipino entrepreneur can succeed in e-commerce as long as they have the right tools, opportunity, and platform. We will continue to collaborate with brands like Unilever to support the local communities, their livelihood, and their families.”

Dorothy Dee-Ching, Vice President for Beauty and Personal Care at Unilever Philippines, said, “Yes to Positive Beauty is a movement for all Filipinos to champion a new era of beauty and personal care that’s inclusive and sustainable. As the number one beauty and personal care company in the country, we acknowledge the part we play in being a force for good, and Yes to Positive Beauty encompasses our commitment to do this through our brands. This includes championing for equal opportunities, which we have been able to do through our continued partnership with Shopee and Mano Amiga, as well as lending a helping hand to MSMEs, especially those greatly impacted by the current crisis.”

To provide consistent support for the sellers, Shopee’s relationship managers worked closely with them to create irresistible discounts to attract more customers, and also assisted them in mapping out advertisements for their products via social media. With the sale happening in just a few days, both sellers are preparing to stock up on their inventory to meet the expected increase in demand. To support sellers like Cecilia and Janette, check out the Yes to Positive Beauty Sale this May 17 to 19, 2021.

  • Getting an OLED TV in 2021? Here’s what to know about screen burn-in

Getting an OLED TV in 2021? Here’s what to know about screen burn-in

The demand for OLED TVs is still on a steady rise in 2021. According to Consumer Reports, more brands are expected to come out with entry-level OLED sets to make it more accessible to people looking for affordable TVs with 4K quality.

That being said, however, the concern over screen burn-in is expected to also grow alongside it. But what is it exactly and what causes it?

Simply known as “burn-in,” this is a permanent defect in areas of a TV display that can be caused by cumulative effects of displaying the same image or scene for long periods of time. This usually starts as an image retention—when a TV shows what appears to be a shadow of the original image even after it has disappeared.

OLED TV at a local airport waiting area with burn-in, as evidenced by the dark shadow in the middle of the screen.

OLED displays are much more susceptible to burn-in because it relies on the self-emissive nature of its individual pixels. Therefore, when a TV is on for hours, the pixels that light up a static image can “burn in” due to pixel aging with its brightness diminishing to a lower state.

In the past there have been reports of OLED TVs installed at prominent spots such as the Incheon International Airport that showed signs of burn-in that can make customers worry about the long-term reliability of the device.

OLED TV owners might be able to fix the problem and prevent permanent damage by turning down an OLED TV’s brightness and avoid leaving static images on for several hours or even days. Some displays have “pixel refreshers” that automatically shift an entire image on TVs by a few pixels.

They can also prevent burn-in by consuming less of certain types of content that show static graphics remaining on screen for a long period of time. These types of content can include news channels and live sports that show scores, tickers, and channel logos as well as video games that show health meters, status bars, or maps on a certain part of the screen.

But even then, there is still a possibility that some images will be retained. The static image somewhat disappears when switching channels but eventually, it becomes a major cause of concern when the image is already transfixed on the same spot. It becomes a constant eye-sore and the only way to enjoy watching their TV again is by buying a new one.

To check for burn-in, a popular method called the gray screen test will let you see image retention and burn-in more clearly. Samsung has also developed a burn-in detection video test for easier checking.

If you’re an OLED TV owner and are looking to switch, consider opting for a QLED TV instead because this TV technology uses a backlight to provide brightness. This means that the pixels aren’t susceptible to uneven aging, which ensures that the screens are safe from burning in.
