  • OFW entrepreneur’s Miss Derm clinic is raising a few eyebrows – but not for the reasons you think.

OFW entrepreneur’s Miss Derm clinic is raising a few eyebrows – but not for the reasons you think.

Self-made entrepreneur Marzen Salazar remembers the many moments when she would catch her grandmother in front of the mirror, filling in her eyebrows faded by time.

Miss Derm owner and founder Marzen Salazar

Humans are said to be capable of nearly 10,000 facial expressions. The slightest twitch of facial muscle, the direction of the eye, and the movement of eyebrows all mean a plethora of emotions – the non-verbal cues that make up the unspoken daily chatter.

Marzen Salazar with the Miss Derm staff

Yet as one grows old, it becomes more difficult to do so; the muscles loosen, but most significantly, the eyebrows thin along with the lashes.

“My grandmother always draws about her eyebrows. She would try it but (I) would never be satisfied,” remembers Marzen. “When I was growing up in the ‘90s, eyebrow tattooing was a popular solution to the fading of the brow for the elderly and people with thin strokes – but even tattoos have their limits.”

Today, as Marzen recalls her time growing up in Laguna with her lola, Marzen is gradually and decisively building her own business to provide a better solution for eyebrows, lashes, and other facial care woes.

In 2020 during the beginning of the pandemic, Marzen boldly launched Miss Derm – a clinic specializing in eyebrows, lashes, and facial treatment services, including microblading.

A relatively new technology for Filipinos, microblading uses small needles to create soft and subtle hair-like strokes and deposit pigment on the skin. It is a form of cosmetic tattooing but, unlike the traditional tattoo that embeds pigment deep into the skin, microblading only injects pigment superficially on the body and thus is only semi-permanent.

At Miss Derm, microblading is only done by certified microblading artists. Artists undergo intensive training to provide the highest level of quality and care for customers.

    More than just a business

From one clinic in Makati, Marzen expanded Miss Derm to two more locations: Las Pinas and Quezon City – one additional business address each year. Despite travel restrictions, Miss Derm’s number of patrons have grown through word of mouth, attracted by the quality of premium services to help customers with their facial care needs.

“I’ve always been motivated by the fact that the services we do at Miss Derm directly affect our customers’ disposition. If eyes are the windows to the soul, eyebrows and lashes are the frames that help define what you want to express and how you want to be seen. We want to help our customers increase their confidence and wear a brighter face every day,” says Marzen, a former wedding photographer-turned communications manager in Oman.

Aside from its popular Elite Brows/Lips Package, Miss Derm offers a wide range of microblading, microshading, eyeliner, and blading solutions. Customers will also find a menu of no-needle procedures, including Brow Lamination, Lash Lift, Lash Extensions, and HIFU Skin Tightening for the face, neck, and the body.

Miss Derm’s complete facial care and skincare solutions prove to be perfect for customers who desire convenience and a highly personalized level of care. At Miss Derm, artists converse with customers about their needs and suggest ways to achieve how they want to look.

This level of service and hospitality is the product of Marzen’s entrepreneurial instincts, of putting customers at the heart of the process, and ensuring that employees are taken care of.

Despite Marzen’s location in Oman, she has overseen the growth and initial success of Miss Derm with flying colors remotely, flying to Manila to visit the clinics when needed, but talking directly with her clients on a daily basis. “When customers chat with our social media channels for feedback or bookings, they’re likely talking to me. “I always had a passion for talking with customers, especially women. As a wedding photographer in Laguna and Oman, I deal with women on a regular basis. One should listen and be attentive; they know what they want. When you delight them with great service and you build a positive working relationship, they will come back for more and they will treat you like family,” says Marzen.

  • QUILTS Awards 2023: Honoring Frontliners in the Fight Against HIV

QUILTS Awards 2023: Honoring Frontliners in the Fight Against HIV

Shining a spotlight on exceptional facilities and partner organizations that have contributed greatly to the country’s HIV treatment efforts.

The EpiC QUILTS Awards, now in its second year, continues to recognize outstanding health facilities and partner organizations that have provided care and treatment to people living with HIV (PLHIV). The awards ceremony took place last May 22, 2023, at the Ynares Center Antipolo, in time for the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial (IACM) Commemoration.

Quality Uptake and Improvements in Lifesaving Treatment Services or QUILTS was inspired by the AIDS Memorial Quilt — a global symbol of solidarity in the fight to end HIV and in remembrance of those who we lost from preventable AIDS-related illnesses. The QUILTS Awards started in 2022 through the Meeting Targets and Maintaining Epidemic Control (EpiC) project in the Philippines, which is led by FHI 360 and funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). This event is in collaboration with the AIDS Society of the Philippines and Department of Health (DOH) Centers for Health and Development in CALABARZON, Central Luzon, and Metro Manila.

“Like last year, we continue to honor the outstanding work being done by various facilities, organizations, and local government units as they collectively provide quality care and treatment for people living with HIV,” said Teresita Bagasao, project director for EpiC Philippines. “The goal of the QUILTS Awards is to empower these frontliners by recognizing their important contribution to end the HIV epidemic in the Philippines by 2030.”

The QUILTS Awards include the following main categories:

    · Excellence Award for HIV Treatment Initiation

    · Excellence Award for HIV Treatment Retention

    · Excellence Award for Viral Load Coverage

    · Differentiated HIV Treatment Services (Overall Champion)

The recipients of the awards were determined through the accomplishments of EpiC-supported facilities in greater Metro Manila based on data provided by the Department of Health Epidemiology Bureau. A panel of judges consisting of HIV experts and advocates from UNAIDS Philippines, AIDS Society of the Philippines, and USAID determined the recipients of the awards based on criteria reflecting consistent quality delivery of HIV treatment services. These awards are in the areas of starting people living with HIV on lifesaving antiretroviral therapy (ART), ensuring that they adhere to this treatment, and finally obtain regular viral load tests. A person living with HIV that adheres to their ART can achieve an undetectable status, a point where the virus is no longer detectable in their blood and therefore cannot be transmitted sexually.

According to Bagasao, “The International AIDS Candlelight Memorial celebrated annually every third Sunday of May is important globally as it honors those who have passed from AIDS-related illnesses. As advances in HIV treatment now allow us to prevent AIDS-related deaths, it is equally important for everyone to know that there is a community of dedicated frontline HIV workers who ensure that each person diagnosed with HIV will live a long and productive life through accessing treatment services.”

HIV treatment services are provided free in the Philippines through the DOH. These can be accessed from government clinics and community-based and private treatment facilities certified by the DOH. These services can be booked through Quickres.org.

Last year’s winners include Luntiang Silong-Bulacan Medical Center, which won two awards: Linkage to Care and Differentiated Service Delivery (DSD) and Case Management.

Dr. Concepcion Garcia-Lat, City Health Officer of this year’s host Antipolo City, highlighted the importance of collaborative work in delivering HIV services to key populations. “Our work in Antipolo Social Hygiene Clinic involves assistance from development partners like PEPFAR. USAID, and EpiC. While DOH and our provincial and local governments ensure that enough investments are put towards HIV services, we are thankful that our development partners are there to provide additional technical support,” Garcia-Lat added.

With over 250 participants, this momentous occasion unites passionate HIV advocates, dedicated medical professionals, and influential community leaders. This special gathering will commemorate the tremendous strides made in the fight against HIV in the Philippines. Adding to the festivity, attendees will be treated to electrifying performances by Drag Race PH’s Lady Morgana, and soulful duets from singer-songwriter Nica del Rosario and artist Justine Peña. It is sure to be a celebration of hope, resilience, and progress towards a brighter future for those living with HIV.

The EpiC projectis a five-year global initiative that provides strategic technical assistance and direct service delivery to achieve HIV epidemic control and promote self-reliant management of national HIV programs by improving HIV case finding, prevention, treatment programming, and viral load suppression. Through the QUILTS Awards, EpiC will continue to empower key stakeholders, partners, and the PLHIV community in building a future where HIV services, from prevention to treatment, can be freely accessed by anyone without the fear of stigma.

  • Rex Education’s ‘Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon Continuum’ recognized at UNODC Conference as an exemplary school-community-family program for strengthening drug-abuse prevention

Rex Education’s ‘Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon Continuum’ recognized at UNODC Conference as an exemplary school-community-family program for strengthening drug-abuse prevention

During the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Conference recently, at Novotel Manila, Quezon City, Rex Education bared its ‘Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon (BPE) Continuum’ for strengthening drug-abuse prevention.

UNODC’s Conference gathered organizations, policymakers, and prevention implementers for discussions on addressing drug-related problems in the country. Under the theme “Prevention Digest: Strengthening the prevention strategy and family-based initiatives in the Philippines”, UNODC encouraged individuals and groups to share drug-abuse prevention responses that are health-centered and based on family intervention. The agenda tackled the healthcare system, evidence-based programs, and Philippine experiences in family-centered interventions.

During the 3rd day of the event, REX was among the government and non-government organizations who shared their experiences with prevention programming, as well as the impact and influence of these initiatives.

Taking a whole school approach to reform initiatives

BPE officially launched during the January 2021 Annual Educators’ Congress, where 400 private and public schools expressed interest and intent in pilot implementing the framework.

In March 2021, pilot implementation for BPE began with 13 schools completing one implementation cycle. These schools were Marantha Christian Academy, St. Edward School, Canossa Academy Calamba, Ednas School, Cherished Moments School, Colegio de Santa Rita de San Carlos, Inc., Cabulay High School, San Andres Elementary School, Divisoria High School, Rosario National High School, Sagana National High School, Patul National High School, and Sinili Integrated School.

REX gave life to the portmanteau ‘Edukampyon’, a combination of the words edukasyon (education) and kampyon (champion) to mean champions of education. The BPE program is grounded in the Edukampyon advocacy: To engage duty-bearers and build their capacities for respecting, protecting, and fulfilling the right to quality education.

Pursuant to BEDP 2030, REX advocates a whole school approach that entails the collaboration of all members in a school community. The whole school approach recognizes that the informal curriculum is just as valuable as the formal one, highlighting the importance of providing learners with inclusive and safe environments beyond the classroom. This framework is meant to advance agendas on global education and reform initiatives such as health awareness, eradication of violence, and drug-abuse prevention.

The whole school approach also comes into play in promoting the six facets of the Filipino whole learner. REX has identified various indicators that should ensure a Filipino learner is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged, and values-oriented. Across these indicators, there is a common theme that encourages school culture and leadership to promote learners’ physical and mental health, implement policies relevant to civic participation, and equip students with the essential competencies for lifelong learning. Families and communities are recognized as a major part of this advocacy, as the success of a child’s education largely relies on the effective collaboration of stakeholders advocating every learner’s well-being.

Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon in support of UNODC standards

Based on the standards of UNODC, drug-abuse prevention is a significant motivator for children, young adults, and adults to contribute positively in their families, schools, workplace, and communities. Drug-abuse prevention at the school level focuses on the health and safety of children and youth, in a bid to encourage self-actualization that can lead to the realization of their full potential, prompting them to become productive members of society.

UNODC has found that developing a student’s personal and social skills can prevent drug use and alcohol abuse. For children aged 10 and below, programs centered on improving resistance skills and self-control have been shown to reduce general problem behaviors in and out of the classroom. Several other factors can also influence discouragement of substance abuse, such as students’ academic performance, commitment to school, and social opportunities.

To achieve these benchmarks, REX designed BPE as a three-tier implementation framework that will allow schools to conduct systematic assessments of their progress in the UNODC’s domains. BPE encourages schools to work with their stakeholders, students, parents, and community members in the planning and implementation of activities and interventions that are relevant to UNODC’s standards.

Attendees of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Conference pose for a photo at Novotel Manila, Quezon City recently, with the theme “Prevention Digest: Strengthening the prevention strategy and family-based initiatives in the Philippines”.

Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon as an exemplary school-community-family program for drug-abuse prevention

The BPE’s pilot implementation allowed learners to learn about drug-abuse prevention through the collaborative efforts of their teachers, administrators, parents, and other stakeholders. In particular, parents reported feeling more engaged and knowledgeable of their children’s school activities and priorities after participating in the BPE process.

The participating schools showed significant levels of involvement and support, having developed appreciation for the BPE framework. REX intends to leverage this support in fine-tuning effective BPE advocacies, communications, and education initiatives for more schools across the nation.

In doing so, REX was able to complement UNODC’s standards on drug-use prevention. Placing value in partnership, emphasizing the importance of effective parenting, and delivering evidence-based prevention strategies proved to be the pillars that drove the success of BPE’s initial launch. REX is committed to pushing BPE at a wider scale, in a bid to ensure children and youth become invulnerable and more resilient to drug use.
