    MWC Shanghai 2024: HONOR Unveils Industry’s First AI Defocus Eye Protection and AI Deepfake Detection

    Debuted at MWC 2024, the latest HONOR features leverage hardware-level AI to relieve myopia and circumvent scams.

    Manila, Philippines, June 28, 2024 – Global technology brand HONOR revealed two industry-leading on-device AI innovations created to empower individuals and introduce a new level of user safety. During its keynote at MWC Shanghai 2024, titled “The Human-AI Synergy: Intelligent Devices Will Empower People Better,” HONOR showcased its latest advancements in human-centric AI, AI Defocus Eye Protection and AI Deep fake Detection. During the keynote session, the brand also reiterated its focus on human-centric on-device AI and its belief in the potential for AI-enabled hardware to empower users by delivering tailored services while protecting user privacy.

    Evolving Eye Protection Technology from Prevention to Relief

    Introducing the latest advancements in eye-protection technology, HONOR launched AI Defocus Eye Protection at MWC Shanghai. Noting the global increase in cases of nearsightedness caused by long-term screen usage, this technology leverages AI to simulate defocus glasses on the smart device’s display.

    Wearing defocus glasses is proven to be conducive to eye health as they intentionally induce controlled defocus in the user’s peripheral visual field to help maintain clear central vision. This effect creates an altered visual perception that slows down the eye elongation process, which leads to nearsightedness. Taking eye protection from prevention to creating technology that can lead to relief for consumers, HONOR’s AI Defocus Eye Protection has been shown to decrease users’ transient myopia by 13 degrees on average after reading for 25 minutes, with some users experiencing a maximum reduction of 75 degrees.

    Mitigating Fraud with AI Deepfake Detection

    Circumventing the risks presented by cloud-based “deepfake” AI technology, HONOR has introduced AI Deepfake Detection. To help prevent fraud and detect digitally manipulated content, AI Deepfake Detection examines frame-by-frame information such as eye contact, lighting, image clarity, and video playback to identify flaws that are imperceptible to the human eyes.

    Additionally, the AI Deepfake Detection has been trained through a large dataset of videos and images related to online scams, enabling the AI to perform identification, screening, and comparison within three seconds. If synthetic or altered content is detected by the feature, a risk warning is immediately issued to the user, deterring them from continued engagement with the potential scammers for their safety.

    Esteemed fashion designer Michael Leyva is set to showcase his latest collection this weekend, June 29th at Conrad Manila, marking a distinct departure from his recent bridal-focused show at the Peninsula. This new collection, rooted in pastel shades and intricate couture craftsmanship, promises to captivate audiences with its playful and vibrant approach.

    Leyva’s new collection is inspired by the delicate beauty of pastel shades. This theme, combined with couture craftsmanship and meticulous detailing, forms the foundation of the collection. “We aimed to offer a fresh perspective, contrasting the all-white elegance of our bridal collection at the Peninsula with a burst of playfulness and color,” says Leyva.

    The collection features a variety of couture pastel themes, showcasing an array of vibrant colors and luxurious fabrics. “We began with design studies, translating them into toiles, and then focused on the details and silhouettes we wanted to create,” explains Leyva. The result is a series of pieces that embody both elegance and creativity.

    In this collection, Leyva introduces a groundbreaking technique involving pleated silk organza combined with horsehair on strings. This innovative approach creates a voluminous, sculptural effect that adds a distinctive touch to the garments. “It’s all about pushing the boundaries of traditional couture and introducing something fresh and exciting,” Leyva adds.

    The creative process for this collection was both rigorous and inspiring. “We started by finding inspiration and creating design studies. These concepts were then refined to ensure each piece truly represents our vision of elegance and couture,” Leyva notes.

    With this collection, Leyva hopes to convey a sense of joy through playful colors and extravagant designs. “We want to inspire our audience with something vibrant and new, while still maintaining the elegance of couture craftsmanship,” he shares.

    Reflecting on the evolution of his designs, Leyva observes, “Over the years, I’ve seen my designs evolve while maintaining a distinctive signature style. In the fashion industry, embracing change and seeking new inspirations are essential for continuous growth and innovation.”

    Philippine Ballet Theatre fans and dance lovers are thrilled of the upcoming SARIMANOK classical ballet show at Samsung Arts Theater this July 6 – 7, 2024.

    Philippine Ballet Theatre will showcase the rich ethnic glory and diversity of the Philippines through a fusion of classical ballet, regional dances, and mythology with the generous support of Philippine Airlines and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.


    The goal of the Philippine Ballet Theatre is to share the captivating tale of Sarimanok, a bird from Filipino Mindanao mythology. This mythical creature, known for its vibrant feathers and enchanting presence, takes center stage in a ballet that transcends time and culture. The ballet tells the love story between a mortal and a moon goddess, revolving around the majestic Sarimanok.

    Sarimanok symbolizes hope and abundant blessings, and Philippine Ballet Theatre sees the ballet as a divine gift. Through this performance, they aim to generate interest in our cultural heritage and showcase the talent of our current artists. Sarimanok is the artistic vision of Ronilo Jaynario, the Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer, set to the original music composed by Paulo Zarate, a highly acclaimed composer. Jaynario and Zarate aspire for ballet, like Sarimanok, to become a symbol of hope and an investment in the Filipino people.


    Jaynario explained, “Ibalon made a powerful impact on both the audience and the performers. It received excellent reviews and accolades that any dance company would aspire to have. Therefore, our challenge is achieving the same impact level as Sarimanok. Creating such an impact is vital to us as a company”

    Inspiration for the ballet comes from the story itself, the dancers’ response to my movement that enhances the process, and the music that moves me in creating the choreography. I am incredibly grateful that Paulo Zarate is composing for PBT’s Sarimanok.”

    Jessa Tangalin and Gladys Baybayin will share the role of the mythical Sarimanok. Alternating as the romantic couple of Indarapatra and Moon Goddess will be Matthew Davo and Gabrielle Jaynario and Jimmy Lumba and Joni Galeste.

    With Sarimanok being the second Full-length Filipino ballet in a row, PBT hopes to send out a strong message that their commitment to creating a national influence through their art is ablaze.

    Make No Room for Online Pirated Content:Protect Your Data, Report Suspicious Websites, Buy Original

    As we gear up for another school year, we face piracy threats with online publications at our fingertips. Books and other learning resources are becoming increasingly accessible, influencing how we study and learn. How safe are our learners, teachers, schools, publishers, and institutions in this environment? The recent cyberattack on the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) reveals the serious risks we face.

    On April 2, 2024 local hackers breached the DOST network, compromising two terabytes of data, including personal information of employees and research plans, designs, and schematics. This incident underscores the vulnerability of online platforms to data breaches, particularly when cybersecurity measures are not regularly maintained, monitored, updated, and enhanced.

    Protecting our online identity, fighting piracy, and supporting copyrighted content are crucial. Individually, we can secure online learning environments by teaching students to safeguard their personal data. This includes securing devices, avoiding public Wi-Fi, using strong passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and accessing only licensed learning management systems. Schools can configure desktops and laptops to prevent downloading certain file formats, especially scanned PDFs of textbooks. Learners and school personnel should practice these precautions at home and report suspicious websites.

    Beyond data security and piracy risks, there is an important ethical aspect. Using pirated content infringes on copyright, undermines the hard work of content creators, jeopardizes their livelihood, and diminishes the recognition of their creativity and original work. Buying original content from legitimate sources shows respect for intellectual property rights, promotes integrity, and supports content creators.

    Moreover, opting for original content benefits users, given the rigorous book development processes that help ensure high-quality, accurate information. By sourcing textbooks from legitimate providers, we can contribute to the fight against piracy, and at the same time, secure better learning experiences.

    In addition to individual efforts, the government must advocate for and support content creators and book developers. Stronger anti-piracy laws and rigorous enforcement are essential, and public support and vigilance are crucial.

    We must unite in this fight—society needs to stand together against piracy and uphold integrity in education.

    As we start this new academic year, let us commit to being cybersafe and ethical in our use of online content. We can make smart, ethical choices. Say NO to piracy!

    In my opinion, it is important to coordinate with the authorized government or private agencies with regards to protection of property rights and anti-piracy in general.
