Reyman Bantad is an unemployed father of one from Negros Occidental
Reyman Bantad is a simple 31-year-old man from Negros Occidental. He lives with his partner of ten years and their eight-year-old child. Reyman wants the best things in life for his small family but lost his job as a sugarcane (tubo) farmer two years ago. He has been unemployed ever since.
The Bantad family survives on Reyman’s partner’s meager earnings as a hacienda worker planting tubo. But work opportunities don’t come by often, and money is tight.
Reyman and his partner do what they can to keep their child from going hungry, even borrowing money so they can buy rice. Though he occasionally asks for help from his siblings, they can’t always help out since they also have mouths to feed.
He copes with these struggles by tuning in to Wowowin every day so he could live vicariously through the winners on the show. He dreams of winning himself and securing a better future for his family.
Those dreams became a reality when he won P1M in Shopee Milyonaryo last November 9.
Reyman learned about Shopee Milyonaryo on Wowowin, and though he fantasized about the possibilities, the thought of winning had never seriously crossed his mind. When he learned that he had won the opportunity to be on the show, he invited his family to watch it with him.
Reyman’s family was so overwhelmed when he won the P1M jackpot that one of his siblings even ended up fainting. “Nung nalaman namin na nanalo ako, lahat kami naiyak. Kasi kailangan na kailangan namin ‘yung pera,” he shared.
As for his cash prize, Reyman has practical ideas in mind. He plans to invest the money by starting a business so that his family can finally enjoy a better future.
He also plans to give part of his winnings to his loved ones, especially now that the holidays are approaching. “Kasi binigay ‘yan sakin, dapat mamigay rin ako,” he said.
Want to be the next millionaire?
Shopee Milyonaryo is an interactive lucky draw contest on GMA’s Wowowin, where users can win up to ₱1,000,000 in cash every weekday until November 11. Users can participate by logging on to the Shopee app and claiming the raffle code. Winners will be announced every weekday during Wowowin. During the show, the winners will pick one out of six boxes, one of which contains ₱1,000,000 in cash.

Last October 2-4, 2020, Filipino developers, engineers, technologists, designers, scientists, coders, storytellers, makers, builders, innovators, and entrepreneurs from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao came together to address real-world problems on Earth and space by engaging with the United States space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) free and open data, together with partner agencies like Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), National Centre for Space Studies (CNES) of France, the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the European Space Agency (ESA) in a virtual hackathon. Some of the projects developed include road hazard detection, data visualization tools, and machine learning for satellite image monitoring, and a lot more.
This year’s edition of NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge was held online due to the coronavirus pandemic situation worldwide. The theme of this year “Take Action” — is a critical reminder that anyone can make a difference, even from the comfort and safety of home. In this unprecedented time, the Space Apps community exists as a reminder that there the tools and talents to tackle challenges facing the planet, as well as the ability to unite across boundaries and borders of all kinds. Vice President Leni Robredo lauded this event as “our ability to gather ourselves, organize, and come together have opened the doors to technology and progress. We have done great things, cure diseases, find ways to connect with each another across the oceans, and even walked on the Moon… all thanks to mutual cooperation.”
The first Director-General of the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) Dr. Joel Joseph S. Marciano Jr. stressed the importance of space science in helping the society. “Space infrastructure, space data, and space-enabled services therefore help inform policies and decision-support systems that can lead us to better plan and decongest our cities, improve our transportation systems, monitor the state of infrastructure, enable better connectivity, enhance our agricultural and fisheries production, and protect our natural environment,” he said.
Since the start of Space Apps in the Philippines on 2016, the country witnessed on how the community grew from a group of volunteers to forging partnerships with collaborators and stakeholders. For many years, Filipinos collaborate and work with one another in developing projects to solve problems using space technologies. NASA and partner agencies recognized the hard work done by Filipinos, and thus being recognized and awarded globally as winners and finalists consecutively in the past three years. Software developer Michael Lance M. Domagas is optimistic that in these momentous and trying times, the country would still choose to prioritize and give value to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), especially in emerging fields like space science where innovators can contribute and solve the most pressing problems prevailing in the society and environment today.
“How could someone imagine that Earth-observation data coming from space could give us valuable and unique insights about the socio-economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic in various countries, and to pinpoint possible mosquito habitats which causes another epidemic called dengue? Why can’t we support our own modern-day heroes specializing in new and emerging technologies to address issues and help others in our country? NASA and partner agencies from other countries have already recognize the ingenuity of Filipinos for the past three years. Now is the proper time for our own country to recognize their achievements too,” Michael Lance said. Together with technology and developer community leader Tzar C. Umang from Pangasinan and U.S. cultural affairs officer Matt T. Keener, Michael Lance looks forward in having more Filipino winners and finalists being recognized, and to a more meaningful and impactful Space Apps challenge in the future years to come. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) undersecretary for competitiveness and innovation Dr. Rafaelita “Fita” M. Aldaba, Analytics Association of the Philippines (AAP) president Colin Christie, former Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) undersecretary and University of the Philippines System Information Technology Foundation president Monchito B. Ibrahim, assistant professor and assistant chairman for administration, Department of Geodetic Engineering at the University of the Philippines and Sustained Support for Local Space Technology and Applications Mastery, Innovation and Advancement (STAMINA4Space) GRASPED project staff Dr. Czar Jakiri S. Sarmiento, part-time lecturer and technopreneurship/program manager at the Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) Nitro Erwin A. Lizarondo, senior consultant for data analytics for social impact at CirroLytix, Data Ethics PH, and COVID-19 challenge winner for the best use of data Nick Tobia, and Africa University chair educational technologies and United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) Space4Women mentor Ms. Basuti Gerty Bolo from Zimbabwe served as local judges in Manila.
“The Global Organizing Team is inspired by the journey the Philippines has with the Space Apps program. In particular, we appreciate the development of STEM in the Philippines and elsewhere, because one goal of Space Apps is to foster interest and learning in these fields worldwide,” said Matt Scott, the global community director and storyteller.

Contrary to what others may think, today’s “new normal” when it comes to learning and working from home is not just about choosing the right computer or the fastest internet connection.
There is still the need to print since Learning from Home (LFH) or Working from Home (WFH) is not entirely and purely 100% digital or virtual.
For students, there are learning modules that need to be printed, especially when there’s a school activity. For WFH parents and even young professionals who need to discuss reports like spreadsheets or office presentations, it is still relatively easier to read text or data from an actual paper printout compared to reading from a device.
But still, why print? It is because there may be families that can afford only one device at home, and they can’t read modules or reports if the device they have like a desktop or smartphone is the one used to communicate to teachers and classmates or officemates. To some, it may be logical to invest on a printer instead of another PC or smartphone because it would be more affordable.
However, it should not be just any printer brand. For the LFH and WFH bunch, the printer should be a quality brand and should have enough features to answer various remote learning and working situations. Something like an HP Smart Tank 515 All-in-One Wireless Printer from HP.
The HP Smart Tank 515 All-in-One Wireless Printer is the perfect device for homeschooling or work-from-home professionals out there. It’s Print, Copy and Scan features offer total versatility since school or office work can be printed for better readability in color or black and white, or even copied and scanned then sent back digitally.
It also has the HP Smart App that lets you print photos on your smartphone, or even download photos from social media accounts, from the cloud or Camera Roll gallery. Just download the HP Smart App to your mobile device so you can print practically anytime or anywhere, which is extremely beneficial especially for mobile parents who need to assist their kids for their most crucial school work even if they’re not at home.
Aside from being an intelligent printer, the HP Smart Tank 515 All-in-One Wireless Printer is absolutely perfect for any high-volume yet low-cost printing needs. Imagine being able to print a whopping up to 8,000 pages for color and 6,000 pages for black. That volume capacity alone makes the HP Smart Tank 515 All-in-One Wireless Printer a valuable and smart investment for any LFH or WFH printing needs.
The HP Smart Tank 515 All-in-One Wireless Printer comes with a set of individual HP GT53/GT53XL Color Original Ink Bottles set with Original HP Inks in Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black that’s easily refillable and replaceable that even kids can do it on their own if they see ink levels going low because of HP’s innovative spill-free refill system. And the individual ink bottles allow parents or users to just buy the color that’s actually needed.
These ink bottles are also so affordable (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow at P275 per bottle and Black at P330 per bottle) that it can’t make a noticeable dent on the family budget so one can print thousands of pages of school modules or office reports, all in quality prints, vivid color and striking detail that’s easier to read.
The HP Smart Tank 515 All-in-One Wireless Printer is definitely the smartest LFH or WFH investment in these trying times for the homeschooler or remote worker. Available for a remarkably reasonable and affordable price of only P9,295. Get it at Electroworld, PC Express and Silicon Valley near you!
As the number of months under quarantine increases, so too does our craving for social gatherings and physical interactions. And while we do miss a lot of aspects in our lives before the pandemic, there are just some parts of it that we don’t—traffic, bumping into people we wish we wouldn’t, and the occasional awkward, sticky, and embarrassing social moments.
Unfortunately, no matter how hard we try, these things happen. So, with restrictions beginning to ease and with most people settling into the “new normal”, it would be a great time to remember all these tricky situations and come up with countermeasures to turn them from a tormenting memory into a memorable one.
Autocorrect
This is one of those technological innovations that prove to be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it brings convenience and ease of communication especially when you’re on-the-go, but on the other—and for some strange reason—it transforms mundane responses into very colorful ones. And this is especially true for Filipino users because autocorrect almost always transforms a Tagalog word into the nearest—and most inappropriate—English word.
A good comeback from this would be to acknowledge it, laugh it off, and even turn it into a fun banter. Also, make sure to re-read your messages before sending them. You wouldn’t want a simple “Thanks, tita” to turn into an obscene phrase you’d have to explain to your aunt.
Forgetting someone’s name
While there was an easy fix for this problem during quarantine—display names in video communication platforms—this tricky situation will still exist in the next normal. For this, you can play an old trick in the book by asking them to input their contact details on your phone or go digital and ask for their name on Facebook for a quick friend request.
Family reunions
Ah the famed Filipino family reunion where titos and titas just can’t help themselves from blurting out “compliments” on weight and relationship status. There are plenty of options to survive these events like being frank with your relatives or simply shrugging off their comments, but a fun and creative solution would be to clap back with sarcasm. Not only will it help diffuse the tension, but serve as an announcement that you are perfectly confident with who you are and that no one can mess with you.
Upset stomach
You’ve had a great morning so far. You woke up on time, you plotted your schedule for the day, and you were able to make yourself a great breakfast—something you haven’t done in ages. But while you’re on Grab car or in the meeting that just began, your stomach starts to feel uncomfortable and you find it hard to focus.
The best solution for this problem is to take a quality antidiarrheal medicine like Diatabs. Diatabs can easily take care of your stomach problems for you and give you the peace of mind you need when it comes to bowel trouble. What’s more is that Diatabs is a product of Unilab, a trusted brand in the country, so you can rest assured knowing that you are taking a quality tested and proven medicine for diarrhea.
Photo caption: (file: MBustos_Diatabs) Have less worries and protect yourself from tricky, embarrassing situations with Diatabs, the trusted remedy for diarrhea.
Aside from guaranteed quality and safety—an assurance backed by data from regular quality tests that you’re not assured of by less established brands. Diatabs is more accessible to Filipinos as it can be bought in leading drugstores nationwide.
