  • URC Supports Agawan Festival 2024

    URC Supports Agawan Festival 2024

TARA NA SA SARIAYA!  Universal Robina Corporation (URC) Flour Division has partnered with the local government unit of Sariaya, Quezon for this year’s Agawan Festival. Aiming to make the festivities bigger and grander, URC will sponsor the “Pinagong” eating activity, “Agawan sa Bagakay,” and the Street Dancing Competition.  URC Flour Division Operations Director Dario Arive Jr. and Sariaya Quezon Mayor Marcelo Gayeta led the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing.

Witnessing the signing were (L-R) Graziella Mae Pons, URC HR Officer and HR Business Partner; Gemma Tacata, URC Senior Manager and EHSS; Lanie Mendoza, Sariaya Municipal Treasurer and Public Market Administrator; Marivic Gayeta, Organizer – Agawan Festival 2024; and Renaliz Miguel, Representative of Sariaya Tourism Culture and the Arts Office (STCAO).

Universal Robina Corporation, through its Flour Division, has partnered with the local government unit of Sariaya, Quezon and the Sariaya Tourism Culture and the Arts Office (STCAO) for a bigger and grander celebration of this year’s Agawan Festival.

The Agawan Festival is an annual harvest festival held in Sariaya, Quezon every May 15 in honor of Saint Isidore the Laborer, the patron saint of agriculture and good harvest. The celebration is known as the “Happy Pandemonium” and is one of the four harvest festivals celebrated in the province of Quezon.

During the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), Sariaya Mayor Marcelo Gayeta and his wife, Marivic Gayeta, who is currently heading the organizing committee of this year’s Agawan Festival, welcomed the sponsorship of URC Flour Division.

“Masayang masaya ang bayan ng Sariaya dahil kasama namin ngayong taon ang Universal Robina Corporation Flour Division. Talagang masasabi naming sila ay kaagapay ng ating bayan sa pagpapaunlad dahil sa kanilang bagong bukas na planta na tiyak magbibigay ng trabaho sa ating mga kababayan dito sa Sariaya” Mayor Gayeta shared.

The URC Flour Division is one of the top flour millers in the Philippines. With plants located in Manila, Sariaya, and Davao, the division has a combined milling capacity of 2,150 metric tons per day. The state-of-the-art flour mills and blending facilities allow the division to manufacture customized products that fit the specific needs of its customers.

URC’s sponsorship of the Agawan Festival 2024 is the company’s way of appreciating Sariaya’s support when the town welcomed the opening and operation of their flour mills and blending facilities located in Barangay Talaan, Aplaya Road in Sariaya, Quezon.

The company will sponsor some of the activities including: the “Pinagong” eating activity targeting 3,000 people; the “Agawan sa Bagakay” with special prizes to be won by participants; and the Street Dance contest where dancers will be using “upcycled” sacks as their costume. URC will be donating used flour sacks for the dancers to use in their presentation.

“We creatively developed the “Pinagong” eating activity. Since URC is a producer of quality and world-class flour, we will donate our products to our partner bakeries for them to produce 3,000 pieces of the town’s famous and delicious “Pinagong” breads. Aside from the procession and other fun activities, this unique eating event will be one of the highlights of this year’s Agawan Festival. Exciting is an understatement for this activity!” said Naida Ebora, Sales, Marketing and Distribution Director, URC Flour.

Marivic Gayeta, wife of Mayor Gayeta and lead organizer of this year’s Agawan Festival, is also thrilled with the collaboration. “Ikinalulugod ng bayan ng Sariaya na kami ay inisponsoran ng URC sa aming nalalapit na kapistahan. Sigurado kami na ang aming mga kababayang makikilahok sa pagdiriwang ng fiesta, pati na rin ang mga turista na dadayo at makikisali ay matutuwa sa mga programang aming hinanda kasama ng URC.”

The annual Agawan Festival features a fiesta procession where people playfully snatch goodies and other produce hanging from the houses (or “pabitin”) as the parade winds its way down the streets. Colorful buntal hats are festooned all over the façade of houses. String beans are draped on windows like curtains, and banana leaves are used to adorn fences. The most traditional elements in the decorations are the bagakay, or young bamboo branches from which junk food, native delicacies such as the kiping, fruits, candies and money, are hung for people to collect as they pass by.

The annual festivities will be celebrating its 25th year this 2024. The term “Agawan” was coined by the town’s former parish priest Rev. Fr. Raul Enriquez, who was also the former president of Sariaya Tourism Council, and the proponent of the town’s Quadricentennial celebration in 1999.  For complete details of Agawan Festival 2024, visit the official FaceBook page of Sariaya Tourism Culture and the Arts Office.

  • Philippine Book Fair Is Just A Book Experience: NBDB’s PBF 2024 Is One of the Grandest Philippine Book Festival

For me, the National Book Development Board (NBDB)’s Philippine Book Festival (PBF) 2024 is one of the grandest Philippine Book Festival joined by book lovers, authors, publishers, personalities, artist, actors, guests and other concerned citizens from diverse cities and other places in the country that was held last May 25, 2024 to May 28, 2024 at World Trade Center Metro Manila, Pasay City.

I was one of those who were excited and enjoyed the activities in the Philippine Book Festival 2024: “It’s Not Just A Book Fair, It’s A Book Experience.” Everyone was thrilled of the activities of the recent PBF 2024, especially those book lovers who was eager to meet their favorite authors, publishers, artists, actors and other personalities who participated the grandest Philippine Book Festival in the community.

A lot of books published from diverse Filipino authors and Filipino publishers to read by the diverse readers from the diverse cities and other places in the society. I have learned how important of the existence of the Filipino books (including news papers, magazines, comics, etc.), especially those books written and published with our own ethnicity language in a certain locality. We should be reminded of the importance of basic principles and basic things in our daily living.

The art of reading & listening is continuous process of communication and comprehension of both readers and listeners of books and audio, respectively, in general. How beautiful to read and speak with your mind of your favorite books written and published by your favorite Filipino authors and Filipino publishers in general. We should not also forget to read and internalize of the verses written in the Bible as part of our everyday living. Book is not only intended for children or book lovers, but book is for all. As long as we’re still able, imagine and think about it of the Philippine Book Festival this day & beyond.

  • In light of the reading crisis, NBDB introduces national reading alliance

In light of the reading crisis, NBDB introduces national reading alliance

PASAY CITY, METRO MANILA (May 02, 2024) — As part of its ongoing efforts to boost readership given declining reading scores, the National Book Development Board (NBDB) has formed the National Alliance of Reading Advocates (NARA), a network that gathers readership advocacy groups and individuals from all over the country to form a unified network that will enable collaboration and better spread the news on existing readership initiatives.

In anticipation of its official launch this November, the alliance had its soft launch last April 26, 2024 at the main stage of the Philippine Book Festival at the World Trade Center Metro Manila, where reading advocacy groups and individuals pledged their commitment to the alliance.

As a platform dedicated to nurturing a robust national reading culture, the NARA shall form a mesh of various readership campaigns through an online community (called NARA Connect) and regular milestone meetings and conferences on the state of readership in the country. Besides consolidating readership campaigns from around the country, the alliance shall also aid in the cross-media adaptation of Philippine literary works, the creation of fan-based markets, and help popularize home-grown literary characters.

    Daniel Mariano

“With the decline of readership in non-school books, it is high time for the NBDB to gather all advocates and like-minded people who promote readership in the country. We at the NBDB dream of a community of reading advocates who support each other,” said Daniel Mariano, chief of the Board’s Readership Development Division (the agency’s unit responsible for the nationwide reading community, the Book Nook project).

“Many Filipinos love storiesbe it in the form of film, TV, or literature. As reading advocates, we call on all our allies to enrich this interest in stories and use it to create a stronger national reading culture,” added Mariano.

As the largest traveling book fair in the country, the PBF was the perfect venue to introduce to the public the NBDB’s latest readership campaign.

    NBDB Executive Director Charisse Aquino-Tugade

“There is a reading crisis—and it is high time that we all start working together to address it. We have a systemic problem when it comes to building and nurturing reading habits in our society, and so we must therefore face this with a cohesive strategy,” said NBDB Executive Director Charisse, who delivered the State of the Reading Nation during the soft launch.

The NARA soft launch also served as the alliance’s first wide-scale orientation, which was attended by representatives from the following organizations: UN SDSN Youth Philippines, ASEAN Youth Organization, READ to Achieve Foundation Philippines, Inc., Yellow Boat of Hope Foundation, Binhi English Literacy Foundation, Magbasa Tayo Movement, AHA! Learning Center, The Storytelling Project, Libro Mo, Kaalam Ko project, Project Pearls Inc., School Readers Club, Pinoy Reading Buddies, IBBY Philippines, Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities, Association of Progressive and Orthodox Literature and Literature Originators, Laguna Province Private Schools and Administrators Association, Inc., Rizal Library of Ateneo De Manila University, St. Mary’s Publishing Corporation, Claretian Communication Foundations, Inc., Inteligente Publishing, Paper Katz, FDM Vision Care Research and Training Institute, Beyond Books Publication, 8 Letters Bookstore and Publishing, DIWA Learning Systems, Inc.
