  • For the Philippines’ journey to the “next normal,” digital literacy is what matters

For the Philippines’ journey to the “next normal,” digital literacy is what matters

In today’s world, the term literacy is not just about learning how to read and write anymore. As the country charts its future toward the so-called “next normal,” presuming that this pandemic will end already, digital literacy in the Philippines will be of high significance and importance.

The level of digitalization at present may already be in an advanced stage, but do Filipinos have the skills and capabilities already to be fully functional, effective, and efficient and be called “literate” enough to use digital technologies? Are they digitally literate enough to use information and communication technology (ICT) to tackle issues related to gender inequality, education, health, even employment?

Heck, can Filipinos even connect to the internet properly and consistently?

Recent data from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the specialized agency of the United Nations about ICT, showed a surge in terms of internet usage to an estimated 4.9 billion in 2021 from around 4.1 billion back in 2019.

But despite this surge, connecting to the internet still remains unequal. An estimated 2.9 billion people have still never used the internet and of this number, 96 percent live in developing countries. “While almost two-thirds of the world’s population is now online, there is a lot more to do to get everyone connected to the Internet,” said ITU Secretary General Houlin Zhao.

For most ordinary people, being able to send messages and post to social media or simply surf the internet does not mean being digitally literate. People must have specific skills to be able to create digital content and share it online in the most responsible manner. The time to teach students anything and everything about digital literacy should also start right now, in the classroom, while they are still young so that once they graduate, they can proudly say that they are already digitally literate and be able to find gainful employment.

As many people look to the internet for information, it is also about teaching them how to create, communicate, share and yes, discern the kind of information they get. People should know how to consume and share correct information, especially in this world where “fake news” is practically considered gospel truth, protect them from and even help stop cyberbullies and cybercriminals. Digital literacy means not just having the ability to enter the World Wide Web and surf websites but also having the skills to effectively and responsibly find, assess, and evaluate information found online.

Digital literacy for all Filipinos is the kind of dream that Computer Literacy, Innovation, Connectivity and Knowledge or simply “CLICK” partylist wishes to achieve for Filipinos. It is about spreading awareness about digital literacy as a catalyst for change in many aspects of their lives, be it in education, employment, health, business and yes, more importantly, governance.

An important part of improving lives of many Filipinos is also about governance, which is why part of what CLICK intends to provide a solution in the area of governance is to usher it to the digital era. Admittedly, the government is still not ready for digitalization. Government processes are still mostly manual or paper-based, and many public servants in government are somewhat still aloof to modernization and technology, perhaps due to lack of awareness about its benefits, or probably the thought of “change” scares them.

With CLICK, their legislative agenda with regard to digitizing government services is to let every level of government, from the national to the barangays undergo a digital literacy journey to keep itself at pace with technological developments in governance in the 21st Century. Perhaps, reinventing how the government provides services and opening up its eyes regarding its role in national development through legislation will fast-track its modernization/automation of services using technology to make the lives of Filipinos easier and better in the years to come.

CLICK believes that only through effective and sound legislation can they affect change for all Filipinos regardless of economic status and geographical location using the power of technology and will help chart the country’s digital literacy roadmap. Decades of neglect and misinformation, coupled with corruption in terms of governance, will not be fixed overnight. Righting what was wrong for decades is not just a “weekend project.”

The work of crafting laws to help create better lives for Filipinos through the power of digital technology will be painstaking and meticulous, and will not offer an instant cure to their problems. Ultimately, through laws that leverage on technology, CLICK partylist can do its share of slowly undoing what had been wrongly done, and create a stronger and more progressive Philippines that can compete—or belong side-by-side—with other more developed countries in the world with regard to digital literacy and competency.

For CLICK, digital literacy should become a way of life to give the country a chance to move forward and create an efficient and digitally sound Philippines, and a better future for Filipinos.

  • Shopee Recognizes Top Sellers For Operational and Marketing Excellence

Shopee Recognizes Top Sellers For Operational and Marketing Excellence

These top performers exceeded expectations and continue to grow on the platform.

As the e-commerce industry rapidly grows, so do the avenues and opportunities for digital MSMEs to stand out. With this need to adapt quickly, Shopee recently held its Shopee Seller Operations Excellence Awards to recognize sellers who performed exceptionally during Shopee’s mega sales and campaigns in the final quarter of last year.

With three categories based on what helped paved the way for their success, these sellers maximized the tools and tailor-fit platform features Shopee provides in order to emerge as among  the fastest-growing sellers in the platform:

    • Campaign Ready Award: Sellers who have the best campaign preparation performance
    • Top Campaign Day Performer Award: Sellers who have the best order fulfillment performance during a campaign day
    • All-Around Award: Sellers who have the best overall performance during campaign season, from preparations to fulfillment of orders.

Martin Yu, Director at Shopee Philippines, said, “Growing in e-commerce is a journey, and we are glad to support our sellers every step of the way. Shopee is pleased to recognize and celebrate these sellers who are exemplary in using Shopee-provided tools and opportunities to grow their business. We believe that they will be an inspiration to many other Filipino entrepreneurs who are already Shopee sellers or soon to embark on their digital journey with us.”

Shopee’s monthly campaigns and initiatives have helped to boost sellers’ sales and growth on the platform. During its 11.11 Big Christmas Sale, local sellers benefited from the spike in shopping activity, as those joining 11.11 for the first time saw their orders surge 18 times compared to an average day. For its 12.12 Big Christmas Sale, sellers in non-metro cities benefited from the increased visibility at seeing a 12-time uplift in orders compared to an average day.

Shopee also enables its sellers to thrive through dedicated mentoring, free training sessions, as well as exclusive online courses in Shopee’s Seller Education Hub. These efforts to make e-commerce accessible for all include helping sellers maximize the benefits of digital payment options via its integrated mobile wallet, ShopeePay. Through ShopeePay, sellers can have easier access to their earnings via the Seller Balance feature, allowing for better tracking of their shop’s revenue. Sellers can also directly cash in their ShopeePay wallets with their Seller Balance, so they can enjoy the many features of ShopeePay such as buying load, paying bills, and sending money.

As e-commerce becomes a more integral part of the everyday lives of Filipinos, Shopee invites current and aspiring entrepreneurs to explore the evolving digital space by Getting Started on Shopee! Download the Shopee app for free via the App Store or Google Play.

  • 2022 Samsung QLED and Lifestyle TVs Recognized By Top Global Certification Institutes For Eye Comfort, Safety and Color Accuracy

2022 Samsung QLED and Lifestyle TVs Recognized By Top Global Certification Institutes For Eye Comfort, Safety and Color Accuracy

    • Lifestyle TVs receive ‘Glare-Free’ verification from UL, ‘Eye Care’ certification from VDE in Germany
    • Twenty new QLED models named world’s-first ‘Pantone Validated’ screens

SEOUL, Korea – January 13, 2022 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced that its 2022 QLED and Lifestyle TVs have been recognized by leading global certification institutes for eye safety and color technology. The news comes as the company announced its newest QLED and Lifestyle TVs at CES 2022.

The 2022 Samsung Lifestyle TVs won the ‘Eye Care’ Certification from Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker (VDE) in Germany, one of Europe’s largest technical-scientific associations with more than 36,000 members. The certification applies to Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle TV models including The Frame, The Serif and The Sero. The screens are evaluated on various categories, including ‘Safety’, ‘Gentle to the eyes’, flicker level, uniformity, and color fidelity.

(From Left) Seokwoo Yong, EVP and Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics and Raj Shah, Vice President at Marketing of Pantone

The new Lifestyle TVs were assessed for safety from blue light emission and melatonin inhibition levels based on a light hazard classification method set by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle TVs satisfy the IEC’s standards for screen flickering, which can cause eye fatigue or headache for viewers. They were also recognized for excellence in color fidelity and picture quality uniformity, both elements of which contribute to eye comfort level while watching TV.

Samsung’s 2022 Lifestyle TVs[1] were also verified as ‘Glare-Free’ by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a leading independent safety science company. UL’s verification validates the ‘Glare-Free’ claim by assessing the products against Unified Glare Rating (UGR) testing standard set by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE). Samsung’s new Lifestyle TV models use a new Matte Display with anti-glare, anti-reflection and anti-fingerprint properties to deliver the optimal brightness and provide the best picture quality without glare.

(From Left) Seokwoo Yong, EVP and Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics and Cherif Kedir, President & CEO of VDE
    • Reflected Glare, which determines whether the objects on a TV screen are visible even when external light is reflected on the surface
    • Discomfort Glare, which determines whether a TV screen is too bright
    • Disability Glare, which determines whether a TV screen is overly bright when watching TV in a dark room

These glare assessments were calculated based on test results of watching TV in both 300 lux, which is equivalent to a brightly lit work area, and in 150 lux, which is usually the value for a dimly lit work area.

Additionally, Samsung’s all new 2022 QLED models received the world’s first ‘Pantone Validated’ certification from Pantone, the world-famous brand in the global color industry and creator of the Pantone Matching System (PMS).

These models receiving this recognition from Pantone include all 20 newly released models – 15 QLED TVs in both 4K and 8K and five monitors. Samsung’s 2022 QLED TV line-up was recognized for its accurate expression of 2,030 Pantone colors and newly added 110 skin tone shades.

(From Left) Seokwoo Yong, EVP and Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics and Wyatt Brannan, Vice President of North America Consumer, Medical, & Information Technology of UL

“As TVs become more of an entertainment hub in the home, there’s an increased demand for screens with top-tier picture quality that minimize eye strain,” said Seokwoo Yong, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D Team, Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “This recognition from leading global institutes validates our technology that delivers best-in-class images along with the most comfortable watching experience.”

Laudicos share their recipe for success in their food business

Starting a food business is an ultimate dream for many, and running one is surely not an easy feat. While many entrepreneurs continue to face struggles, Chefs Rolando “Lau” and Jacqueline “Jackie” Laudico remain grateful as they overcame obstacles in running their food business.

The culinary power couple have maintained their restaurant’s success amidst the pandemic, and here’s how they did it:

    Adapting to changing times

Finding success in the food industry is undeniably more challenging, but Chef Lau and Chef Jackie’s responded with constant adaptation and practical reinvention.

Robina Farms ambassadors Chef Jackie and Chef Rolando Laudico

With restrictions on dine-in, they leveled up their takeout services, which meant taking a step back and learning more about meal deliveries. They utilized the best packaging materials to ensure each dish gets delivered with optimum quality. They also went ahead and reinvented their menu offerings to adjust to the current needs of the customers. The Chefs have embraced the fact that in order for them to successfully manage their food business, they have to consistently learn new things and adapt to the times.

    Attitude for gratitude

According to Chef Jackie, having ‘Attitude for Gratitude’ is the way to go. Based on their personal experiences, finding things to be grateful for regardless of challenges has helped them be where they are now.

Culinary power couple Chef Jackie and Rolando Laudico remain grateful despite challenges in their food business

Amidst the hurdles, they remained grateful that being in the food industry means their services are still essential to people. They see each and every day as a fighting chance to improve and keep their business afloat.

    Choosing the right partners

Chef Lau says he’s very lucky to have Chef Jackie as a partner not only in life but also in their business. “You’ll need that partner who complements your weaknesses,” he shared.

And while the two Chefs are already a force to be reckoned with in the food industry, they still recognize the need to have a reliable partner that provides stable, reliable, and quality service at all times. That’s why they have been partners with Robina Farms for four years now.

Meat and poultry provider Robina Farms has been a constant in the daily operations of the Chefs’ businesses. With Robina Farms’ superior meat and egg products, Chefs Lau and Jackie are confident that they’ve got a partner who can keep up with their needs and meet their quality expectations.

A PARTNERSHIP FOR KEEPS. Robina Farms seals its continued partnership with renowned restaurateurs and culinary power couple Chef Rolando “Lau” Laudico and Chef Jacqueline “Jac” Laudico (center) through a contract signing ceremony held at Chef Laudico’s Guevarra’s restaurant last November 19, 2021. The chefs have been the face of Universal Robina Corporation Agro-Industrial Group’s (URC-AIG) meat and egg brand for four years now. Also present during the contract signing ceremony are (from right) URC-AIG’s Marketing Manager, Gamby Diño, and Group Product Manager, Aissa Reyes.

The challenges they faced were blessings in disguise because of all the learnings they gained. So, to entrepreneurs and aspiring ones, keep cooking, keep baking, and keep learning. Take it from the culinary power couple and successful restaurateurs, Chef Lau and Chef Jackie.

Stay Organized this 2022 with 5 Easy Tips and Useful Items from Shopee

It’s time to declutter and make room for your new goals.

Hello, 2022! After taking the time to reflect on the past year, it’s time to get ready for new beginnings. Not sure where to start? For a truly clean slate, your first step should be to clear and rewire your brain. And what better way to do that than with some decluttering and organizing? With a clean, put-together space (and mind!), you can stay focused on your new goals.

Check out five easy tips to help you stay organized throughout 2022. Below, you can also discover product recommendations from Shopee, your go-to source for organization items, essentials, and everything in between at the best prices:

    1. Write down your to-do list

If you’ve got a lot on your plate, don’t attempt to keep your to-do list in your brain—this will only overwhelm and stress you out. Instead, stay on track with a planner. This Undated Planner from National Bookstore, perfect for fans of the hit TV show Friends, features undated pages and blank weekly pages on which you can jot down your checklists and more.

    1. Set your priorities

Got a long to-do list? Don’t attempt to accomplish everything all at once. Set clear priorities by color-coding your planner. You can process each day’s tasks easily by just glancing at color-coded sticky notes. This set of Sticky Notes includes stationery in different colors and sizes.

    1. Manage your workload

How often have you taken on extra deliverables or said yes to engagements, only to realize that your calendar is too full? This year, take care of your mental health and say no when you have to. Stay on top of your schedule with a handy pocket-sized Animal Desk Calendar. These colorful calendars, which come in pretty pastel colors, feature monthly views.

    1. Keep your workspace tidy

It’s perfectly understandable if you don’t always have the time to keep your workspace spotless when you’re busy, but as much as possible, try to keep everything in its proper place. This Wooden Desk Organizer makes it easier to arrange your documents, notes, pens, and other supplies.

    1. Track your finances consistently

Spent more than you intended during the holidays? It’s fine to treat yourself, but remember to set some savings aside as well. Get your finances back on track this year with a Budget Planner. Place your budget for each week inside the binder pockets and jot down your expenditures on the colored labels.
