ZEN and DEI Properties launch the first ever budget hotel in BGC

ZEN Rooms, the #1 hotel chain in the Philippines, launched ZEN Premium Uptown BGC, the first and only budget hotel in Bonifacio Global City. Former Vice President of the Philippines Jejomar Binay led the opening ceremony last December 12, 2019 in Taguig City.

The opening of ZEN Premium Uptown BGC is in line with the pioneering spirit of ZEN Rooms, which already has a track record of disrupting the short-term accommodation sector. In 2016, ZEN Rooms entered the Philippines with the aim to radically improve the value-for-money of hotels in the country, historically plagued by high prices, unsafe facilities and poor guest ratings.

In 2017, ZEN launched ZEN Homes in BGC, the first affordable, professionally-run service apartment brand in the Philippines. Today, ZEN is once again disturbing the sector by opening the only budget hotel in BGC, with a budget premium positioning. Indeed, presently there are only 5 hotels in BGC, all of which are 4 and 5 star properties with rates of PHP 8,000 and above per night.

ZEN’s newly built hotel has 105 rooms and is conveniently located alongside Kalayaan avenue, only five minutes away walk from Uptown Mall with rates starting at only PHP 1,500 per night. The building is owned by DEI Properties, one of the leading family-owned developers in the Philippines.

The opening of ZEN Premium Uptown BGC is part of ZEN’s continuous effort in providing a solution to the lack of affordable accommodations the country’s most dynamic business district, in line with its aim to democratize travel to all.

“BGC Developers have built an amazing modern city with tremendous appeal but with unfortunately no affordable hotels, leading to nonsense situations where business travellers are forced to either spend excessively on high-end hotels at the Fort or commute hours to reach their meetings in BGC. With the launch of ZEN Premium Uptown, we are delighted to be putting an end to this unfair nonsense with our partner DEI Properties.” says BGC based Nathan Boublil, Co-Founder and CEO of ZEN Rooms.

  • Cross-border shopping to benefit from seasonal Ecommerce spike—PayPal

Cross-border shopping to benefit from seasonal Ecommerce spike—PayPal

Digital payments giant outlines three tips on how local enterprises can reach out to global consumers this holiday season

The holiday shopping season is in full swing, bringing with it an ecommerce frenzy. The spike in online purchases during this time of the year also offers a unique opportunity for Filipino retailers: cross border shopping.

“There is a definitely a real opportunity for Filipino entrepreneurs to connect with global consumers. Chinese consumers are particularly promising, given the Philippines’ improved bilateral relations with the world’s second largest economy,” said Nagesh Devata, General Manager for Cross Border Trade, Asia Pacific, PayPal.

According to PayPal’s Cross-Border Consumer Research in 2018, there is a healthy appetite for ecommerce in the Asia Pacific region, with 48 percent of consumers shopping cross-border.[1]Last year, PayPal reported a record-breaking USD 1 billion+ in mobile payment volume for the first time ever on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.[2]

For many traditional brick-and-mortar retailers, embracing an omni-channel strategy that includes ecommerce has paved the way for more sales opportunities, especially during this time of year.

“The festive season, stretching from the end of November with Black Friday through to February with Chinese New Year, typically marks a critical time for small retailers to maximize their business opportunities and boost sales,” said Devata. “For some, these months can generate the profits needed to cover operations for the year.”

The world has become much smaller as digital commerce platforms like PayPal enable merchants and consumers from all over the world do business with one other, to take advantage of opportunities by connecting them with global consumers, allowing SMEs and micro enterprises more opportunities to thrive.

With many holiday purchases now being done online and global consumers opting to shop cross-border, PayPal shares three tips on how retailers can prepare their businesses for seasonal success:

    1. Plan for mobile– Mobile devices have become the preferred platform for shopping due to their convenience. While majority of cross-border purchases in 2018 were still made via desktop, laptop or notebook, the percentage of purchases on mobile is growing. In fact, 32 percent of all cross-border purchases in Asia Pacific was done on mobile.[3]
    2. Check your website security– Research by HubSpot has found that 82 percent of online users avoid sites flagged as ‘not secure’ by their browser. This makes it essential for businesses to strengthen their website security and ensure that their ecommerce pages are compliant with the local laws of their target markets.[4]
    3. Offer more payment options – According to PayPal, many consumers will cancel transactions if their preferred or trusted form of payment is unavailable. The 2018 cross-border study shows that two-thirds of online shoppers will only use a payment option or brand they recognize when making a purchase.[5]

By knowing how to effectively use online and digital channels to sell, small retailers and SMEs can make the most out of the festive season and stay ahead of the competition.

  • Promote Your Business Online! Learn How by Joining a Social Media Marketing Workshop

Promote Your Business Online! Learn How by Joining a Social Media Marketing Workshop

Are you on Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube? If you spend two to three hours daily merely scrolling on your feeds, why not earn from these social media platforms?

I’m sure you have thought about possibly selling a piece of pre-loved jewelry or outfit. This can help you earn a few bucks to add to your travel funds.

Why not pursue it, or maybe start your own online business?

If you wish to start one in 2020, social media is a great tool to promote your products or services among your target customers.

Aside from building your own website or printing marketing materials such as brochures and business cards, it would be best if you considered investing in social media campaigns.

    Here’s why:

Your customers are on social media.

To increase your sales, you have to expose your products or services to as many prospective customers as possible. Social media allows you to promote your brand to a large number of people in a short amount of time.

The Digital in 2017 report showed that Filipinos spend an average of 4 hours and 17 minutes daily on social media sites such as Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter. On Facebook alone, 47 Million Filipinos have an account and can learn about your brand if you know how to use this platform.

You only need a small budget to advertise on social media.

Imagine putting up a physical store and renting a place where you can display your products, versus creating an account on Facebook or Instagram where online customers can learn about your business. Which do you think costs less?

You can spend at least $2-$5 a day to run ads on Facebook. And if you know tips on how to advertise, this simple effort can be profitable for you.

Setting up on social media is easy.

You do not need to hire an expert marketer to do the work for you. As long as you have your copy with an image or video to go with your advertisements, you can run them on any social media platform in a few steps.

However, not everyone knows how to get this done, especially newbies. Often, online store owners will post and share random content that doesn’t get them viewers or buyers.

If you want your social media marketing efforts to be productive, learn what works or not from a workshop that I’d like to recommend to you.

  • Korea’s billion-dollar travel group Yanolja doubles down on ZEN Rooms to create future of hospitality in Southeast Asia

Korea’s billion-dollar travel group Yanolja doubles down on ZEN Rooms to create future of hospitality in Southeast Asia

ZEN Rooms (“ZEN”, “Company”), one of the leading economy and mid-range hotel franchises in Southeast Asia, today announced it had signed a definitive agreement with travel group Yanolja regarding additional investment, acquisition of early investors’ stakes and the signing of a wide strategic alliance. Yanolja is the leading travel group in South Korea, backed by Booking Holdings and GIC, among others. Yanolja was the lead strategic investor in the company’s US$15M funding round in 2018, with rights to invest further. Early investor Asia Internet Holdings (Joint Venture of Rocket Internet and Ooredoo Telecom) has agreed to exit its stake to Yanolja. RedBadge Pacific and SBI Korea remain investors, and Access Ventures join as co-investors.

The alliance of ZEN and Yanolja creates the leading economy & mid-range hospitality group in Southeast Asia. It combines ZEN’s top-rated budget hotel franchise business with Yanolja’s scale, hospitality technologies and the backing by the global leader in Online Travel, Booking Holdings (behind Booking.com, Agoda, Priceline.com, Kayak etc), thus granting ZEN unique competitive advantages in both hotel technology and sales distribution. The groups will work to heavily deploy automation technology to enhance customer experience, further reduce budget hotels’ operating costs and reinvent budget hospitality across Southeast Asia.

ZEN Rooms is today one of the largest hotel franchises in Southeast Asia, with 13,000 rooms under franchise. Since Yanolja’s investment in mid 2018, ZEN has grown revenues 400% and has become in Q2 2019 the largest hotel chain in fast-emerging Philippines, with 5,500 rooms under franchise.

Southeast Asia is today the world’s fastest growing travel market, fueled by exponential domestic and regional demand of young travelers and millennials (e.g. the number of Chinese visitors has quadrupled in the past decade[1]). Yet, the value-for-money proposition of its budget hotel sector has historically been defective, plagued by several issues: fragmentation, poor hygiene & safety standards, lack of training and low technology use.

ZEN was founded in 2015 to improve the state of budget hospitality and bring much needed operational and technological efficiency to the estimated 2 million independent economy rooms in the region. Thousands of hotel owners have since joined ZEN’s franchises to improve their revenue, optimize their cost base and increase the long-term value of their property. These efficiency gains ultimately benefit travelers who can enjoy safer and better value-for-money stays.

With a deep emphasis on customer satisfaction, ZEN franchisees have enjoyed the best average guest ratings on Booking.com for two years in a row.

Nathan Boublil, co-founder & CEO of ZEN, comments: “We started ZEN exactly 4 years ago to make budget accommodation in Southeast Asia more affordable and safer. We have proudly built ZEN into the top-rated budget hotel franchise in the region and were honored to be Yanolja’s 1st international investment. With this strategic alliance, we are joining forces with one of the most technologically innovative travel groups and its unique backers Booking Holdings to create the first full service budget & mid-range hospitality group in SEA, able to deploy world-class technology infrastructure in IoT R&D, automation, hardware and software to all hotels in Southeast Asia. This alliance will greatly benefit our ability to serve our hotel clients and ultimately the travelers of the entire region”.

Jongyoon Kim, CEO of Online Business at Yanolja, adds: “Since first investing in ZEN, we have shared the same vision of operational excellence and customer centricity to radically improve the SE Asian hospitality market. In the last 12 months, the ZEN team has taken major steps to fulfill this vision and has grown exponentially while displaying top inventory quality. With this exciting agreement, Yanolja plans to fully support ZEN to solidify its status as the market leading full-stack hospitality company in the region”.

  • For healthy eating individuals, there’s ProSource and NUCO products

For healthy eating individuals, there’s ProSource and NUCO products

If you’ve noticed a significant change in food trends over the past decade, thank a millennial. Comprising of over 50% of the local workforce, millennials now make the largest age demographic in the Philippines. Thus, the interests and preferences of these young tastemakers can greatly influence what can be found in restaurants and other retail establishments across the country.

With more from this age group getting into the trend of a conscientious lifestyle, the popularity of healthful eating habits can be the push towards the golden days of coconuts. Known as the ‘Tree of Life’, the coconut is well on its way towards a renaissance with more millennials taking a liking to the magical fruit. In fact, according to Philippine Coconut Authority Administrator Romulo Arancon, the Philippines could potentially earn $450 million a year, given that the Philippines produces 15 billion nuts annually.

Time was when Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT) or liquid coconut oil—which is made by refining raw coconut or palm—was considered the superior oil, as it processes smaller molecules than those in most of the fats you eat, and is mainly used to obtain helpful medium-chain triglycerides that are easily absorbed into your bloodstream as ready-to-use energy. Aside from that these are a special class of fat that your body turns into energy very quickly, with three main types,–namely; C8, C10, and C12, which each offers unique benefits, from fat loss to heightened immune function.

But since the process involved in separating MCT from VCO may include additives, these benefits are therefore negated. And recent studies have shown that Virgin Coconut Oil, which was once shunned for its high saturated-fat content, is now considered a superfood as it is rich in Lauric Acid, which the body converts into monolaurin that also serves as an antimicrobial agent.

With this in mind, and following extensive research, local coconut producer ProSource Coconut, Inc. (ProSource) and its international brand NUCO, saw the need to respond to a significant change in market behavior over the past 15 years. From the ProSource Virgin Coconut Oil being their major product for trade, the business has now shifted into a multi-product venture offering non-traditional coconut products that will cater to the growing concern for health and wellness relevant in today’s generation.

In a series of focus groups arranged by New Nutrition Business, results revealed that millennials aged 24-33 liked the taste of coconut, expressing how much they enjoyed coconut-based products. Locally, products like the NUCO Coconut Wraps — which is a tasteful, organic and all-natural alternative to the yeasty bread and wraps — sparked the interest of healthy eating individuals knowing how they can enjoy their favorite burritos without the unwanted carbs and guilt.

The NUCO Coconut Wraps come in four (4) different flavor variants, mainly Original, Moringa, Turmeric, and Cinnamon. NUCO also introduced a brand new way to snack—the NUCO Coconut Crunch Cereal. This delightfully satisfying gluten and grain free snack received appealing response from its customers as they best enjoyed it as a cereal with Almond or Coconut Milk, or as a topping on their favorite salads.  NUCO Coconut Wraps and NUCO Coconut Crunch Cereal are all natural and organic, and are USDA and Kosher Certified.  What’s more, they are plant-based, making it perfect for both vegans and those on a keto and paleo diet.

Meanwhile, in other coconut-based products, samples of personal care commodities like the ProSource Cocogugo Shampoo, the ProSource Extra Virgin Coconut Soap and ProSource Extra Virgin Coconut Calming Oil have gone popular for people who pine for smooth and moisturized skin and hair without all the harmful chemicals. Many expressed their affirmation on the products, but the overwhelming response came from the newest food derivatives of the coconut.

Indeed, the coconut is a magical fruit that naturally finds its way into consumer’s lives in a meaningful way. With more millennials driving key trends with health and wellness concerns in mind, ProSource and NUCO continue to innovate, bringing to people delightful, high-quality coconut and organic products.

All ProSource and NUCO products are available online, on BeautyMNL, https://beautymnl.com/, Lazada, https://www.lazada.com.ph/  and their online store at https://prosourcecoconut.com/
