Alvarado’s art is a panorama of Philippine life that ranges  from the decorative aspects of Negros life such as the colorful fruits and vegetables found in the market; or the simple family life that utilizes the bright prints and patterns under the Visayan sun; and on the darker side, the evils of  environmental, social and cultural degradation of which he is known for as a social realist.

Recognized for his unique and distinct style of bright-eyed squat and squared figures that employ strong vivid colors and dark lines, Alvarado frequently applies powerful psycho-sexual symbols with a touch of the surreal as he depicts the plight of sugarcane workers, fishermen and traders found in his native Negros Occidental.

While the artist portrays the pain of the working class, he also does not miss the strong family bond that exists amidst the struggles and sacrifices of daily life.  Along these lines, the artist has worked on numerous Mother and Child canvasses such as “Mag-Iloy”,  2011, a  60cm X 45.5cm oil on canvas. Here we find a son locked in the embrace of his winged mother, portraying the mother as angelic in her selfless love.  The work is a warm picture of comfort and protection in typical Alvarado style.

In 1992 he was among the Thirteen Artist awardees of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and twice a recipient of the Philippine Art Awards (Philip Morris Art Awards).  In 2004 he was honored with the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan sa Larangan ng Pintura Award by the CCP.

Alvarado has had over 50 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions both here and abroad including the prestigious Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, the Queensland Art Gallery and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, USA.   His works are also part of the collection of the Singapore Art Museum.

In an interview, AXA President and Chief Executive Officer Rien Hermans said as the company started crossing the line in 2010, it recognized that the customer has to be at the centre of attention in everything that AXA does – prompting a change in systems and procedures for customer service and in building up sales.

“Every research is showing that we have succeeded in this and that customers have a more positive experience in their dealings with AXA. There are more repeat sales, better persistency, and increased referrals,” Mr. Hermans said. “These two pillars resulted to two things: 1) sales more than doubled from 2009 to 2011 with compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 45%, and 2) improved customer satisfaction.”

AXA with CEx

This was the result of the AXA strategy of giving customers what they need by segmenting the market according to the distinct needs of the customers, their behaviours and general insight on insurance.

A survey conducted by AC Nielsen through telephone interviews showed that net customer satisfaction for AXA increased from 70% in 2010 to 75% in 2011. “We did that in a lot of different fields, especially in operations where customers saw changes that gave the impression that they are at the top of what we do. Last year, we ranked as one of the top players in terms of total premium income (TPI).  We broke the P10-billion barrier by giving people what they need,” Mr. Hermans said.

Ariel Magtoto, AXA Customer Experience Head, said that in their most recent Scope survey, AXA Philippines exhibited the greatest improvement in customer scope among the global insurer’s eight Asian operations. Scope is a satisfaction survey conducted annually with AXA customers, distributors, and employees.

“To be preferred, we must ensure that we deliver what our customers truly need, at the minimum. It all starts with listening to what they’re saying and being sensitive to what they’re not saying. We also made every staff realize that everything we do impacts the customer. We created a strong sense of accountability for results,” Mr. Magtoto shared. “By the close of 2011, we set the platform to say that, ‘we are easy to do business with’.”

He added that employees now feel that the company is “more customer-centric, putting customers in the first place” with a marked focus on customers and stronger engagement at AXA Philippines. “The ultimate measures of customer satisfaction are in terms of Likelihood to Recommend, for which we have garnered the highest increase at +27 percentage points, and Intention to Buy More which improved by +29 percentage points.”

AXA has 133,476 individual clients and 160,448 certificate holders of group policies. Of the 130,000 customers, 79,000 have registered their mobile numbers. As for email, AXA already has 12,000 addresses out of its target of 50,000. This paves the way towards more intimate and meaningful customer communications.

Meanwhile, AXA Chief Financial Officer Don San Jose said the company’s net premium in 2011 was P10 billion, net of reinsurance premiums, and its net income at P967 million.

“The top line premium revenue went up by 20% from 2010, and profit went up by 21%. New premiums  was at P7.9 billion, of which P1.2 billion from regular (i.e. recurring) premiums (RP) and P6.7 billion in single premiums (SP). Total regular premiums (new and renewal) of P3.4 billion grew by 21% from P2.7 billion the year before. In terms of total assets, the company grew by almost 10% to P39 billion, of which almost P34 billion are liability funds held for our customers,” Mr. San Jose said.

Mr. Hermans said: “It is important to grow the agency in scale if we are to target 25% CAGR in total new business. We have invested a lot in facilities in the last two years – putting up new branches and renovating the old ones. Our concentration is in the big cities in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao. We just opened a new office in Davao; and soon, we will open new offices in Cebu as well as in Metro Manila and Southern Luzon.”

AXA also plans to grow its agency force from 1,500 to 1,700 for this year.

The market segmentation that AXA implemented recently is also expected to boost its campaign to reach more clients. “We did a research on what customers think, expect, and the hurdles they face when they purchase life insurance and decide to invest, and we came up with three market segments to better address their needs,” Mr. Hermans explained.

Changes in culture in the people who meet customers, and the recruitment and development of people will make the difference, and “in the end, we may be number one,” added Mr. Hermans. “When I started three years ago, I decided that our priority was to become the most preferred company in the Philippines. The results today show that we have translated our words into action and in giving the right customer service.”

He is optimistic that these will drive the results in the next three years. “We are confident to maintain a stable position in the top of the industry,” Mr. Hermans said.

AXA is prepared for changes in the industry such as possible consolidation of players and the increase in minimum capital, Mr. Hermans said. “There will be consolidation, which, in the end, will be better.  As to the increase in capital, our position on the P1 billion proposal then is clear because we are going through the process already. In order to do this business right, you need to have the right amount of capital.”

The CEO also noted that AXA wants to strengthen its position as a health insurer because its business is in both life and non-life.  “There are a lot of preparations to do for that. Towards the last quarter this year, we will focus on individual products – offering a high level of protection for health – critical illness, hospital income, and surgical benefits,” Mr. Hermans said, adding that it is an opportunity for AXA.

Through a clinical study conducted by Filipino entomologists, it has been confirmed that a dengue-lamok species (dengue-carrying mosquitoes) bite not only during the day but at night as well.

This breakthrough discovery debunks a common belief that dengue-lamok only bite at daytime, and that there is little or no threat of dengue at night.

“Many people believe that dengue lamok only bite during the day. This makes them feel more complacent at night, as they think there’s no more risk of dengue infection.

However, this new study shows that the danger of dengue is now more serious, since infection can occur both during the day and at night,” said Dr. Barbara Laviña Caoili, PAE Secretary.

Double Threat: Day and Night Dengue Lamok

The most common source of dengue infection in the Philippines is a mosquito species called Aedes aegypti. Ae. aegypti bite most aggressively during the day, so this gave rise to the belief that dengue infection occurs only at daytimFilipino entomologists have observed that another dengue lamok, the Aedes albopictus, is increasingly present in human dwelling places. In a laboratory study, Ae. albopictus was found bite most aggressively from late afternoon until night. According to Dr. Caoili, the presence of both Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus in places where people live will make dengue a round-the-clock threat.

“Previously, researchers weren’t paying a lot of attention to Ae. Albopictus because Ae. aegypti, being the primary dengue virus vector, was known to be the most common source of dengue infections in humans. Results of the study however, show that Ae. albopictus, known as a secondary vector of dengue virus, presents a danger to humans as well.

Ae. albopictus is now present in places where humans are staying. This dengue lamok bites most aggressively from late afternoon hours and this biting behavior stretches until nighttime. We may face an increase in dengue infections if we are not prepared for this.

Factors raising dengue threat

Several factors may have contributed to the increasing threat of dengue. One crucial factor is the encroachment of human populations into the natural habitat of dengue lamok. Ae. albopictus is known to live in forested areas. With more forested areas being turned into residential developments, people are moving into the natural habitats of these dengue-lamok. This increases exposure of people to Ae. albopictus.

The other contributing factors are environmental and biological. These include:

Climate change and global warming. Across the world, climate change is raising temperatures, as well as increasing humidity and rainfall. This creates tropical and sub-tropical conditions that are ideal for day and night dengue-lamok to thrive in.

Widespread travel. More and more people are traveling to countries where dengue is endemic. Travelers who get infected become incubators of the virus and carry it from one country to another.

Global trade. Dengue-lamok are able to travel along with goods and cargo that are transported across countries.

Weak mosquito control. Dengue-lamok thrive when there are inadequate measures in place to control their breeding and their contact with humans.

Changing survival capabilities. Over time, dengue-lamok develop survival mechanisms that help them thrive even in hostile environments. They are able to develop resistance to some insecticides, or they change their feeding and breeding habits.

Year-long, round the clock

All these factors make dengue in the Philippines an even bigger threat than the AH1N1 virus that caused widespread panic a few years back. In 2011, a total of 110,257 cases of dengue were reported, resulting in the deaths of 580 people. Twenty-five percent of the total dengue cases were in Metro Manila.

By comparison, the incidence and mortality rate of dengue is much higher than AH1N1, as the latter has a nearly 100 percent recovery rate, and fewer Filipinos get infected with it.

As of March 2012, there are already a number of dengue hot spots in the Philippines including Central Visayas (Region VIII); SOCSARGEN (Region XII); CALABARZON (Region IV-A) and the National Capital Region (NCR). The most vulnerable residents in these areas are the children who have underdeveloped immune systems. Dengue is, in fact, the leading cause of childhood hospitalizations in the country.

Dr. Caoili added that dengue is can be a year-long threat in the Philippines, during both the dry and wet seasons as long as there are breeding sites for the dengue-lamok. It has also become a round-the-clock threat, with dengue lamok biting during the day as well as at night. For these reasons, we also need year-long, round the clock protection from dengue.

Level Up Protection Versus Day and Night Dengue Lamok

Based on the discovery reported by the experts, the increased dengue threat also requires increased protection and prevention measures. These must be in place during the day and through the night. One such measure is the use of insect repellent lotion. The ideal insect repellent lotion is one that is effective against dengue-lamok that bite during daytime and nighttime.

The new Green Cross Insect Repellent Lotion is endorsed by the Philippine Association of Entomologists as effective against dengue lamok that bite during the day and at night. The PhiPOP bus has travelled beyond the archipelago and has now reached Filipinos in other parts of the world including Thailand, North America, Hong Kong, Ireland, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, France and the United Kingdom.

PhilPOP is a collaboration among respected local artists and prominent personalities from various industries brought together by a shared vision – to sprak renewed pride and enthusiasm in Origianl Pilipino Music (OPM) and bring about another golden age in Philippine music.

The Philippine Popular Music Festival is jointly presented by Maynilad, Meralco, PLDT, Smart Communications, Sun Cellular, North Luzon Expressway, Metro Pacific Investments, PICC, Philex Mining Corporation and TV5.

The Bangui Windmills or Bangui Wind Farm is a Northwind Bangui Bay Project owned by Northwind Power Development Corporation located in the municipality of Bangui, Ilocos Norte, Philippines.

Indeed, the project in Bangui Bay consists of 20 wind turbines and each is capable of producing electricity up to a maximum capacity of 1.65MW, for a total of 24.75MW. This project is a sustainable energy that could help to minimize the cost of electricity consumption in favor of the customers within the region possibly one of these days after covering up all the expenses incurred in building the windmills.

In fact, the residents within the area of the windmills as a tourist spot has benefited from selling of souvenirs and others products to the travelers and visitors from other cities and municipalities.

Indeed, I had just experienced a great travel in Bangui Windmills during that time with my family and my mother’s side close relatives. Visiting Bangui Windmills is more fun in Ilocos Norte, Philippines.
